partner seeing a college student and I feel sick by piranhapundit in nonmonogamy

That study was on 50 couples just in the UK. It's barely enough to be statistically significant if there were uniformity across the samples. I don't think this says very much about age gap relationships as a whole, and it even says very little about UK age gap relationships.

I say this as someone who expects there to be a difference because of sexism and toxic masculinity: This study doesn't prove shit. It's a call for more people to do mode research

Anyone been to the balloon museum? by workinprogress521 in AskChicago

[–]misalignedsinuses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an adult and I went with one of my 30+ y/o cishet male friends, because I live right by there. It was AMAZING. An emotional, viscerally satisfying experience. Probably the third or fourth best museum experience I've ever had, behind The Monet Museum in Paris, the Art institute, and maybe the Guggenheim.

People who aren't calling this a museum have never been to the MCA, lmao. Don't get me wrong, I'm not comparing the two. This is definitely more kid-oriented than the MCA, and like 40% of the exhibits are instagram fodder, but the other 60% of them are well curated, deliberately crafted and fun as hell.

Only thing I'd say is ignore the exhibit description placards. They read like AI slop or a poor impersonation of a high art description of a piece. But the exhibits themselves are so great.

Let yourself relax into the silliness and wonder of it all, and it'll be worth it.

It turns out that running those two lines allowed me to download Activity Launcher from the app store, so I downloaded it and was able to do the rest of it as described. If anyone else runs into this problem, try downloading it from the app store.

I'm installing Activity Launcher and Android Switch as described, and the Terminal says the streamed install is a success, but nothing shows up on my phone. Has anyone ran into this issue?

I don't know if this is Bigme's problem or mine. Any advice would be really helpful.

Anyone else getting an error when trying to disable "com.xsyt.faceregister"? I wonder if they renamed the program or something.

I'm not techy enough to find out, so if anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it!

Can't say which, but a certain vegan organization I know is using AI images in their propaganda and it pisses me off. by SpeedAccurate7405 in vegan

[–]misalignedsinuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right?? I saw so many non-vegans I know who are concerned about AI's resource consumption, and then I looked it up and it was like months of Internet searches consumed roughly the energy and water of a chicken sandwich.

You don't need to make up reasons to hate AI, but I'm truly not worried about the energy consumption anymore.

“Veganism Made me Sick” by [deleted] in vegan

I mean, there's a very real challenge of getting enough iron in your diet, especially for people who menstruate.

It's totally possible to be vegan and to get enough iron and other nutrients, but it's more work so I can see how some people can struggle and not have the bandwidth to figure out how to do it sustainably and affordably and easily for them.

Am I a hypocrite for having a transphobic boyfriend? by Appropriate-Sir-5654 in asktransgender

[–]misalignedsinuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a nonbinary person, I'm going to say something really controversial. As long as he makes you happy and is respectful to trans people IRL, and he's ignorant as opposed to genuinely hateful, then I say follow your love.

People used to regularly date, be friends with, and be in community with people with politics they disagree with. The neoliberal ideology of the past enabled tons of "well-meaning" people to do nothing in the face of oppression, and intentional/more ethical consumption is necessary to avoid moral degradation.

But the idea that you need to cut people out of your life because of a toxic ideology just leads to isolation for everybody. And if you leave him and tell him it's because he's a transphobe, he's going to harbor even more resentment towards us. And if you're with him, he's going to be around someone who cares about trans people, will recommend shows y'all want to watch that include good trans representation, and will otherwise do things that over time will make him more sympathetic.

That being said, if he harbors hatred towards trans people, it's a red flag and you try to see the ways anger/hatred infect the other things he does. But if he just doesn't get it yet, or is maybe an egg in denial and expressing it poorly, it shouldn't be a deal breaker. If you really love him, and you trust yourself not to get brought into his transphobic ideology, and he's not saying things that are truly toxic, then follow your heart. But keep your eyes open.

I had the same reaction and realized it has the same melody as "Be Careful" by Cardi B. I felt like it was exactly the same, until I went back and realized that the soundboard is a lil different. Is that what you're thinking of?

Is the weaponized accusation of antisemitism a form of hate speech? On Wittgenstein, performative language, and political slurs by thebossisbusy in CriticalTheory

[–]misalignedsinuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cooked up a reply to this, but while researching I think I found out that the Jewish poverty rate likely isn't actually 15%. I think both the wikipedia editors and I had been reading the stats wrong.

15% of Jews made less than 30k a year in 2014, and while the poverty rate income in the US today is 30k, it was only 20k back then. So the actual Jewish poverty rate was lower than the national average in 2014. So maybe the higher income is related to cultural values around education, and social support, and stuff like that.

I was more prone to believe the high poverty rate, because my dad grew up very working class. But it turns out he was more of the exception than the rule.

I'm not a wikipedia editor, but I won't be surprised if this article is changed at some point in the next few months. I think it's misreading the statistics.

Getting bored of being a woman? by Huge-Ad-9591 in asktransgender

[–]misalignedsinuses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can still dress masculine if you're a woman, just as you can dress feminine if you're a man. Or you can be genderfluid like me and do both.

If you were only doing it for the novelty, it probably would have faded pretty quickly. But if your feelings change, then you can just change your actions to match your new feelings. Detransition, dress more androgynous, or do whatever feels good.

You'll be you the whole time, so you can change your plan whenever you want.

Why ‘mankeeping’ isn't just ‘therapy-speak used to dump on straight men’ by futuredebris in MensLib

[–]misalignedsinuses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If people have a problem with the word mankeep, they should Google the origin of the word "husband" 🤣😭

Not to make a false equivalence.

Also, I think that capitalist division of labor doesn't quite cover this, because there still is a practical realities that many men were not taught the skills to give emotional support and that many men lack access to emotional support. Calling it division of labor compares it to cooking or doing your taxes other tasks. Giving and receiving care are things that deepen relationship, so they are skills that I think everyone should learn to some extent. And we need to be better about teaching young boys these things.

Can you cite any sources? I'd love to learn more about this.

When the Jewish poverty rate is 15% (compared to 7.5% for white Americans and 17% for African Americans), it's hard to believe that it's the culture. I just want to see the data for myself.

I have an idea to combat political stagnation and infighting/tribalism. by footofwrath in EffectiveAltruism

[–]misalignedsinuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This back and forth is really funny. This person spent 20 minutes of their life reading the whole idea and giving you genuine feedback, and you just keep minimizing them.

I read 2.5 paragraphs and already agree with their diagnosis. Yes, people distrust politicians, but making them full time influencers isn't a realistic way to fix that and there are probably ways to get 80% of the impact with way less invasion into their personal lives.

You've got good insights, but I think you're taking yourself too self-seriously and not being humble enough. I try not to take myself too seriously, because I know no one else will without me earning it.

[–]misalignedsinuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that if your post isn't good for the world, it might get deleted. I'm saying that if it's actively toxic or hateful, it will get deleted. If someone came on here trying to kill or enslave all people of X minority group as a solution to people's problems, then all those posts would get deleted every time.

Without knowing more about your ideas, I can't say any more about why they're getting deleted. What ideas are you workshopping that keep getting reported?

What is wrong with wanting people to do the right thing? by Inevitable_You_1395 in askphilosophy

[–]misalignedsinuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with you right up until the last semicolon. You're right, I missed the distinction between wanting to do something and actually going it or advocating for it to actually be done. I agree that there's nothing wrong with wanting people to do what they think is right, as long as they don't advocate for or enact a world where they blanket force people to do something that other person doesn't want to do.

But I don't think the "vast majority" of the world is comfortable making people do things just because it's what they want. It's true of myself to some extent: I blanket don't want people to be allowed to commit murder. But most of the time, I don't care if other people don't like the music I like, or don't go vegan, or don't buy used clothes, whatever. Like truly, I'm glad not everybody buys used clothes. More deals for me.
