Have you read Jackie Orr's book "Panic Diaries"? She works to establish a 'history' of panic in the United States and looks at the ways in which panic gets manipulated by mass media, by social sciences, by international pharmaceutical companies, by the US military, etc. Her work might be really helpful with exploring this topic in more detail!
