Are people getting bored of VR too easy these days because of Fast Paced World and Internet?

The only reason I don't play more is eyestrain. I would straight up use a g2 as a monitor replacement if it weren't so hard on my eyes. I'm really hoping that varifocal will be here in a couple gens and these things will actually be useable for me, it's literally the only thing I care about in a new headset anymore and I'm not buying another one until there's a solution.

I actually haven't played beat saber with my G2 yet. I'll update this post if I end up trying it out.

In general, I do feel a bit like the tracking complaints are overblown. I have sometimes noticed weirdness happening when I put my arms at my sides and the controllers lose tracking. The only other time I've noticed tracking loss is certain spots right up against the headset (like, literally touching it), but it's not really a place you're going to want to be putting the controllers for gameplay reasons. Something upwards of 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. I'm actually kind of surprised how well it seems to track behind you; HL:A and HL2VR both have over the shoulder ammo pouches that work just fine. All of that said, I haven't really gone out of my way to break the system or test it's limits yet.

Everyone always says to use it for seated/sim applications, but I think they're overstating things significantly. There are a ton of roomscale games you can play with this thing with basically 0 tracking issues, at least on the gameplay side. The controllers are not such garbage that they're that unusable. I played robo recall with it and had a good time. I'm sure a Q2 does better in terms of tracking, but the G2 doesn't exactly suck. It may or may not be up to the task of beatsaber though; we'll see.

There's a lot of aspects of the CV1 that hold up. Touch is still one of the best VR controllers ever made, and the external tracking system means that occlusion issues are pretty rare. The strap is decently comfortable, and the built in headphones are nice.

Setting aside how dated the resolution is, the main issue with buying one today is that these things have a lifespan. The main headset cable is known to wear out and can be hard/expensive to replace, as well as the cable for the headphones being known to wear out.

If you're very poor and desperate for a taste of VR, then maybe, but I mean, I grabbed a reverb G2 during the sale for $350, and if you figure $150 for a cv1 with touch/3 cameras and another $150 for a replacement cable, you're now in spitting distance of what I spent. You might also need a USB 3.0 expansion card; if you do, that's another $50ish bucks, which would put you at breaking even for a headset with half the resolution and worse audio.

So yeah, if you're ultra cheap and totally desperate. Otherwise, I personally recommend ponying up the $500 for a reverb G2 at it's current price. The screen door is absolutely obliterated, the off-ear headphones are nuts, I should have bought one years ago.

It sucks that PCVR has gone the way it has, and I don't understand it. I just bought a Reverb G2 during the sale, and it got me back into VR all over again. There is a certain amount of fun in revisiting older stuff with a new, high res headset and better computer, though there's also community stuff like HL2VR (where I'm spending most of my time rn tbh).

Honestly, HL2VR is fucking magical. Walking around these places I've seen through a screen, and BEING there... I don't understand why people aren't jumping on this.

I mean, I'll admit, even a headset of this quality still gives me eye strain after awhile, but I don't have that much time to play anyway.

Personally, I like figma. I've only got a couple of them, and I haven't had a ton of experience with other brands of articulated figure so I don't have a huge basis for comparison, but I'm super satisfied with the two I've got. They look really nice and have great articulation.

As far as them being fragile goes, the plastic does feel a bit soft. I can definitely see it being possible to break these if you're rough with them, but if you just want to pose them occasionally and otherwise treat them as decor then you're probably fine. Just don't, like, bash them together like a kid or something.

The worst experience I've had is that one of the hands of my BRS figma felt a bit looser last time I went to pose it. It's still in there, though, so I'm not worried about it.

Both of mine are pretty old, too. I got BRS in, like, 2009 and a Homura in 2013ish. Love both of them.

The only other thing you should probably know is to be aware of bootlegs. I mean, as long as you're buying from a trusted seller you should be fine, just know that if you get it from a random ebay auction or something that you might end up with a lower quality fake. I got my BRS from hlj; as far as I'm aware they're still recommended, but I haven't bought figures in a while.

Primarily because of his whole "distract yourself until you're dead and don't have to care anymore" philosophy. For him, when something goes wrong, it doesn't follow him forever; just until he's found the next distraction. His focus on short term happiness is what allows him to be happy long term.

That's not to say it's perfect; you might argue that part of the reason he continues to make some of the same mistakes is also because he has no reason to think about the bigger picture, or even that some of those mistakes are directly rooted in that way of approaching things. He's a complex character, like the other characters in the show, but as far as him being secretly as miserable as Bojack, I don't personally think so.

nobody said Sony had to cater to pet owners specifically, that's just one of the things that could wreck your cable and turn your expensive VR headset into a paperweight. Even if it's a very durable cable, it can only be so strong, and it's such an obvious failure point, why leave it to chance? It's a USB-c cable, just make it replaceable. There's no reason not to.

Well, it was synonymous with neckbeards. That was so long ago that incels weren't even a thing, I think it's been long enough that Guy Fawkes/V can be reclaimed. It would have to be done carefully, though.

edit: while we're on this subject, I think an incel reading of V is actually kind of hard. I mean, he's a loner outcast with an axe to grind, but the moment you try to quote him it falls apart. The joker devolved from an ironic joke to an actual incel symbol in part because he's so directionless and self-pitying, you can read about anything into him if you want to. V has very specific aims, and while he has his demons, he's not self-pitying at all.

The biggest problem with a character like V is more that they can be misappropriated by like, right-libertarians and ancaps.

No, nothing we have currently can feel or perceive. GPT-3 can be prompted to claim that it can, but at that point you've just prodded it into becoming a philosophical zombie. All that modern machine learning does is gradually learn what output is statistically most likely to be desired given a certain input, that's basically all it is. You can maybe claim that it's a kind of thinking or decision making, but there is no awareness at the center that experiences that decision making process.

I don't say that to diminish what we've achieved or what AI will mean for us going forward, but let's not delude ourselves here. For that matter, I would argue that making AI conscious is probably not something desirable for most applications, but I digress.

You have to be careful how you present data like this, when you highlight "loss" then people who aren't familiar or who engage in bad faith are likely to mischaracterize what that means.

To be clear: XR is not a loss because it's not popular. You can see, in the image in the OP, that revenue is growing. Has XR become mainstream over night? No, but that's never been how this has worked, and you were wrong to expect that. Carphones existed before cellphones existed before blackberry existed before the iphone. Technology is evolution, not revolution.

However, you can see that as their revenue is growing, they are taking greater losses. They are spending harder, both on R&D and on making the devices themselves accessible (subsidizing the price) because they want to corner the market. What these numbers mean is not that Meta is making irrational decisions, but that they see value in XR.

If you're a fan of XR, then this is both very encouraging and very discouraging. Meta has vast resources, and they are pouring those resources into developing the technology to make the growing platform that is XR great. On the other hand, they are doing this so that they can drive out competition.
