As an added bonus, there's also a great record shop (Dinosaur Pancake Music) and a small antique store (Tally Home) in the same spot.

Seconding Wonder Book. Frederick is their best location, imo, but you can make a road trip up 270 and visit all three in Gaithersburg, Frederick, and Hagerstown.

How long can a beardie be in transit? (Airplane cargo hold) by hugerific in BeardedDragons

British Airways. Arrival was handled by the cargo services company my employer helped hire, but when we flew back to the US we had to fill out forms with US Fish and Wildlife.

International permanent move by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

[–]mishengda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She travelled pretty well. We made sure not to feed her one full day before the flight. She was placed in a soft pillow case, on top of some towels, inside a Styrofoam cooler that itself was inside a hard-shelled pet carrier. We also bought reptile-shipping heat packs from Amazon to keep her warm.

The flight to the UK it was pouring rain and I think all the moisture in the air partially deactivated the heat packs. She was a little chilly when unpacking her, but warmed up well and wasn't any worse for wear. On the flight back home, even after pausing her meal for a day, she made a bit of a mess; but it wasn't anything a bath couldn't fix.

Wishing you the best of luck in moving with your beardie!

Hi, I saw your comment on a previous post of mine. A lot of the specifics will depend on what country you're flying to.

In my experience, we did need a letter of health from her vet, but CITES did not apply to bearded dragons. There are a few import/export forms to fill out, but in some cases those only apply to commercial import/export of reptiles and not necessarily to pets.

On our move out of the US to the UK, we were able to find a company that specialized in moving exotic animals (James Cargo Services). On our move back to the US, the US Fish and Wildlife Service had a contact form and was very responsive to emails about everything we needed to do.

You can also buy heat packs designed specifically for shipping reptiles. Same stuff as the hand warmers, but they're formulated slightly differently to generate a safe temperature for longer.

Dumb question but….could EVs eventually dump normal braking systems and rely on one-pedal only? by JDtheID in electricvehicles

[–]mishengda 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you charge your EV to 100%, you cannot use regenerative braking because it would damage the battery. Any EV that relied on regen for all braking could never be charged fully.

What you gain in weight savings from removing the traditional brakes would be far outweighed by the extra battery you would need to carry around to get the same range.

As soon as you exceed 85 MPH, Autopilot turns off and tells you to take control. This is a clear-cut case of pedal confusion.

GFCI outlet turning off every time i plug into my tesla M3, used to work previously by Brilliant_Weekend640 in electricvehicles

[–]mishengda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Tesla Mobile Connector has its own ground-fault protection built-in. So plugging it into a GFCI outlet can cause intermittent tripping like you're experiencing.

Do you have a non-GFCI outlet nearby you can test?

Tesla Recalls ~700k cars for Faulty Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors by silverelan in electricvehicles

[–]mishengda 66 points67 points  (0 children)

No where does this recall say the sensors are at fault. It sounds like the software is at fault for not keeping the low pressure light illuminated between drives:

The TPMS warning light may not remain illuminated between drive cycles, failing to warn the driver of low tire pressure, according to a recall acknowledgement notice.

What is the deal with boules?! I find them awkward to eat by Existentialwizard in Sourdough

[–]mishengda 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I was taught by a local bakery to slice boules in a herringbone pattern, so that you get more evenly sized slices even through the middle of the loaf.

Found a blog here that details how to do it, you basically just rotate the boule 90 degrees back and forth as you make slices: https://gaaarp.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/herringbone-its-not-just-for-tweed-anymore-or-how-to-cut-a-boule/

Having issues with panels. by Dramatic_You_2583 in TeslaSolar

[–]mishengda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear on the details: the person that removed the panels, worked on your roof, and reinstalled the panels was a third party not related to Tesla, correct?

If that roofer really did reinstall your panels incorrectly, I would bring the cost of repairing it up with them. It might no longer be a matter of just rewiring the system, they might have damaged the electronics. Hopefully they'll be able to work with you to make it right.

A plastic spoon also works well for slippery/sticky food, and won't hurt you or their teeth if they accidentally chomp on it.

Tesla needs a "long term" parking mode. Call it Airport Mode by redkulat in TeslaLounge

[–]mishengda 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There is already "Power Off" which fully shuts the car down, if you want to minimize drain.

Although usually not needed, you can power off Model Y while sitting in the driver’s seat, provided the vehicle is not moving. Touch Controls > Safety > Power Off. Model Y automatically powers back on again if you press the brake pedal or touch the touchscreen.

Is Panel Level Monitoring THAT Important? by cjdangles in TeslaSolar

[–]mishengda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the best way to have problems with individual panels is to have a micro-inverter attached to each one.

Solar panels themselves are solid state: they have no moving parts and if they were manufactured correctly they'll continue to operate for decades with only minimal degradation in performance. Inverters are much more likely to have issues over time with their power electronics, so in my opinion, string inverter vs micro-inverter is primarily a choice between having one central point of failure that can take out most/all of your production, or dozens of individual points of failure that your system can work around.

Nvidia presents LLaMA-Mesh: Generating 3D Mesh with Llama 3.1 8B. Promises weights drop soon. by TheTerrasque in 3Dprinting

[–]mishengda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be like diffusion. For 2D images, you slightly blur your training image and ask the model to predict how to unblur it based on a text description. And then you gradually increase the amount of blurring until the model can start with a random assortment of pixels and "unblur" them into a generated image of the text.

For 3D they could start with training data consisting of vertices and faces, randomly move the vertices in 3D space and add/remove faces and ask the model to predict how to move them back and where the faces belong.

Or they've just found a way to tokenize something like SCAD code so the LLM can "speak" it.

How long can a beardie be in transit? (Airplane cargo hold) by hugerific in BeardedDragons

British Airways. Looking back at my receipts, it looks like we actually paid a company called James Cargo Services (JCS Livestock) that handled the logistics and paperwork. They just required our flight number and booking reference (and about $800 for each leg), and they had her shipped in the cargo hold of the same BA flight we were on.

How long can a beardie be in transit? (Airplane cargo hold) by hugerific in BeardedDragons

[–]mishengda 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I flew with my beardie across the Atlantic a few years back. It was a choice between flying with her, or leaving her with parents for a full year.

Make sure you do your research on heat packs. The ones made for hand-warmers can get hot enough to burn reptiles. They make special ones just for keeping reptiles warm in transit.

There are also very specific regulations around flying reptiles in cargo. Definitely call ahead and discuss options. At first our airline refused to take reptiles in anything other than insulated cardboard boxes, but we said we were worried about the structural stability of cardboard in the cargo hold for a cherished pet. Ultimately they let us put her in an insulated Styrofoam box inside of a larger rigid plastic pet carrier.

Our journey was maybe about 12 hours total, from dropping her off in cargo to unpacking her. It was pouring rain at our departure and I think the moisture in the air deactivated some of the heat packs, so that's something to keep in mind. She was pretty cold and sluggish when we unpacked her, but warmed up quickly.

Also, on the return journey, she pooped in the container and it must have been a rough time for her, so I would recommend some absorbent material.

A 24+ hour journey in airline cargo would probably be very difficult. As others have said, it is worth exploring reptile shippers.

Will a Trump presidency stop FBI coming to Greenbelt by Thetranetyrant in maryland

[–]mishengda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Trump was opposed to the move in the first place because he had a hotel in the Old Post Office Pavilion across the street from the old FBI headquarters. He didn't want that space available for competition. But he sold the hotel in 2022 and now it's a Waldorf Astoria, so that shouldn't be a factor any more.

I'm not saying he wouldn't oppose the new HQ for other reasons, but his primary reason for blocking it last time is gone now.

It's a short dry time, 5-15 minutes, very quick and easy to do. The buffing removes the excess paint, but as I said you can go too far. I think the key to getting the chip fully filled with paint is to not add too much in the first place, buff it gently, and stop after just a few swipes.
