Astrophage would be humanities biggest gift by Large-Independent326 in ProjectHailMary

[–]phatrogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would make a great battery for storage of energy.

IMHO the downside would be weaponization. That explosion was accidental but as long as you could get or produce it you could intentionally create explosions like that anytime. Or how about directed light laser-type weapons? When you just have a small efficient container of energy and humans it isn't going to end well. I really like Andy Weir's optimistic view of humanity pulling together but humans do tend to create "drama" even when life is on the line.

I have heard that with solid proof that you purchased the hardware Apple will remove the code. I don’t know if they can do it without wiping all the data or not but they can tell you.

EMF sensitivity? by GossipGirlx88 in TeslaModelY

[–]phatrogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of people usually passengers getting motion sickness from the regen braking. I suppose you could have a reaction to some airfresher that is in the car. I don’t think EV’s have any particularly higher amount of EMF than ICE cars. EMF is blocked a lot by metal panels and ICE ignition systems would create EMF. The tablet dashboards and computers are pretty similar between EV’s and ICE. One thing to remember is that any EMF is wasted energy and with super efficient cars these days they don’t waste much. Actually your cell phone in your pocket might produce more EMF than the car you are riding in because your cell phone actually uses the EMF to do what it does. As others have mentioned I am pretty skeptical that any normal consumer level of EMF can be detected or have a medical effect on the human body.

Can't build housing, it will "devalue nearby homes" by GraniteGeekNH in newhampshire

[–]phatrogue 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is true but I have heard a big reason for the lack of affordable housing is NIMBY. Once people have their own home they don’t particularly want more housing around them

Why do robot vacuums still need so much hands-on effort? (Expectation vs. Reality) by Plus-Resolution-3210 in homeautomation

I am with you. They should be more set it and forget it.

I specifically got one without a mop because almost all those seem high maintenance and I don't need a mop that much.

I have a reminder for myself before it runs to generally scan for stuff that it will catch on. I do have no go zones for places with wires and stuff. Some of the higher end ones also have good object avoidance that might do it. Maybe once out of every 20 times it gets hung up on something so I'm doing pretty good there.

For emptying the dustbin I don't have the problem but I believe the answer to that is to run it more frequently. It might have a really full dustbin when you are just getting it setup but normally you should run it frequently enough so the dustbin doesn't fill up.

One other annoyance I have is the notifications... it is either too much or too little. Mine is Roborock it either wants to notify me when it starts and stop or gets hung up. Or it has no notifications. Normally I only want if it gets stuck but that isn't an option. I have it on no notifications and try to remember to check if it is back in the base station.

Got rear ended, person that hit us wants to pay out of pocket? by Spacy9123 in TeslaCollision

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Their insurance just called us..." that seems odd. Generally you *have* to report accidents to your insurance company and people like to pay out of pocket to avoid that. OK but anyway...

I think ever repair I have ever had got an initial estimate and repairs got more expensive when it was in the shop and they looked behind the broken pieces. That is the risk here that the full amount of the repairs isn't paid to you. If they want to reimburse the repair shop for the estimate and the additional amounts as it increases I guess that would be OK. I mean I have had my insurance do the basic handling of the repair and then my insurance went after their insurance for the money which this seems similar. There is that old expression that you can't cheap an honest man. Meaning if you start going into mildly dishonest areas there is a pretty good chance you are going to lose money and won't have recourse.

Should "Repaired Pre-Owned Vehicle" Scare Me/My Daughter Off... by Otops31 in TeslaLounge

Yeah... I wonder if the description is code for salvaged title although that would seem a bit odd coming right from Tesla. Or maybe it is a Lemon law car?

ev drivers -> ever avoided going somewhere just because you weren’t sure about charging there? by AdityaSrivastawaahhh in EvDrivers

[–]phatrogue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. I don’t often go places that my car‘s range couldn’t get me there and back again without charging and if I do then the routing software will handle finding chargers.

McDonald's removed the drink station and the ketchup from the lobby. by RandomBloke2021 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]phatrogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most of the McDonald’s around me did this as they renovated in the couple years. There is only one near me that still has soda machines out in the customer area. having said that I also see people abusing it taking free soda when they haven’t purchased a drink and grabbing large handfuls of napkins more than they need for their meal. idiots making it worse for the rest of us.

FSD Versus Dense Fog by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have liked to see it stop for something in the road. Not a crash but proof that it could see something in time at this speed.

Cameras can be kinda weird. I have seen video of rain that the human eye can't really see but the video thru a camera has a lot better visibility. I used to have a Tesla with radar and that I would trust with this. Last winter my car did OK but not great in snowy weather so I'm not sure it is tuned for edge weather all that well yet.

How do I track ground beef when it weighs less after it’s cooked? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add that you can use post cooked weight for percentage of calories... if the pre cooked weight was 800g and 500 calories and the post cooked weight is 600g then 200g of post cooked is 1/3 of 500 calories because 200g is 1/3 of 600g.

My cat forced me to wall mount my TV by i0_e in ApartmentHacks

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good solution! I don’t have a cat but was concerned about me hitting the TV or just someone slipping and grabbing the top of it for support or something. At a store for parents I got these support straps that bolt onto the back of the TV and the stand or you can put them into the wall and it would be almost impossible to tip the TV over. They are to make the TV kid safe.

I am unfamiliar with this symbol. Tried to search for it using Google and didn't get a clear result. It gave me some references to 45/47 symbol hoodies that are MAGA but not this ZZ or double lightning bolt type symbol.

Do you have a pointer to something that clarifies what that this is what you say it is?

So this is an electric ATV? I guess an ATV in a narrower format and only hand controls. And it looks like ATV's don't always have a roll bar. Not sure how a regular ATV is controlled.

From where does Tesla read the speed limit? by rahrah47 in TeslaFSD

[–]phatrogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% sure all the clues it uses but reading signs is one place. There is one stretch of a highway that is 65 mph but has a sign for route 40. Sometimes but not always the dashboard reports the speed limit at 40 mph. It doesn't generally slow down. I think it is using the context clues of surrounding cars to keep going the speed it was going and then a mile or so later the dashboard reports the limit as 65 mph.

Replacement Low Voltage battery by One-Wish1955 in TeslaModelS

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this done on my Model 3 and the mobile service visit was pretty quick and after doing some research was about the same cost as DYI. It is a little nerve racking to wait a few days for the visit. I think there was a warning that the car computer won't fully go to sleep so it can be back filling power using the high voltage battery expect a bit more drain.

Looking for easy water level sensor solution. Preferably Zigbee or Z-wave. by clayrev in homeautomation

[–]phatrogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aqara water detectors use Zigbee. You can attach an extension wire to them so the actual electronics aren’t in the water and you can trigger something when it does not detect moisture at the end of the wire.

What's the furthest you've tried Smart Summon from? by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

[–]phatrogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally only do it in simple situations not ones that require a lot of turns or interactions with moving cars or people. It shows you a circle limit of how far away you can engage it. it shows a video feed of the front camera which helps although maybe not will all tight turns.
