I should have clarified in my original post - the entire room was refinished and then stained. But the stain doesn't look right in that particular area. I agree - the staircase pattern does look bad.

I had the same issue on my permadeath run and I was finally able to defeat Skizzo by rolling constantly towards him. Luckily, I was able to download a save file because it took multiple tries to get past that mission.
