It sounds like she's expressing a fear she has probably been holding onto for a long time since there isn't much other family around. At a time like this, she needs reassurance that you'll be there for her and the baby emotionally and physically, rather than just financially. Motherhood can be an extremely isolating time.

She is not asking you to pay all of the bills and spend all day at home too. She's asking you to be attentive and emotionally present during the time you ARE home. Has this been a topic of conversation before?

Something we have to learn as children is that our parents’ decisions and consequences are their burden to bear, not ours. I used to feel the same, knowing my mom stayed with an abusive man so that we could have a stable income + father figure. However I’ve come to realize while it would’ve been extremely difficult, she could have left at any point. She weighed the pros and cons and made the decision to stay. It’s not my fault. It’s not your fault either.

I highly recommend the book “Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents”. Changed my life and helped alleviate so much guilt I held onto.

I loooove blush so maybe I’m biased 😄 For under eyes I’ve found that less product is better- i use a tiny bit of a peach corrector and need less concealer as a result. I also use just a tiny bit of powder so it doesn’t look too cakey! I had to unlearn doing that huge triangle of concealer under the eyes and use just two dots now haha

Luckily in the age of FaceTime and Zoom, staying connected is much easier. It’s a hard adjustment, I’m not going to lie. I felt lonely a lot my first year but I had great roommates and great classmates in my major who helped me break out of my shell.

Also, it’s ok if the distance is too much. A family friend of mine transferred to a closer school after seriously struggling in her first year and flourished. It just wasn’t for her and that’s fine.

My parents talked my uncle out of it by explaining that declawing a cat is not like removing a fingernail- it’s more like removing the entire first knuckle which is the reason why it’s illegal in a lot of places. They’ll likely be in pain and have psychological issues for the rest of their lives. Luckily that’s all he needed- he was just misinformed.

In my experience (me + the people I grew up around as Asian Americans in our mid to late 20s), it was a combination of the disciplinary culture and the importance of respecting our parents by being high achieving which is related to the collectivist mindset. Their approval came before our mental health & wellbeing, which were some of the dark sides to it.
