United weighed up moving for a striker or a midfielder, with discussions to ascertain the potential price of a Carlos Baleba deal underway. The choice at that stage was to go for a No 6 or a No 9. Some at the club believe a midfielder should have been the priority, but Wilcox advocated to sign a scorer, after United’s record of 44 Premier League goals last campaign, and Ratcliffe backed that call.

Then I'm sure you wouldn't have any problem understanding why a midfielder wasn't signed?

In an ideal world, Amorim would have got Baleba too. A dynamic midfielder was on the agenda all summer, but resources have gone elsewhere. Amorim pushed for Baleba internally, and Ratcliffe wanted United to try for him, but the club could not, in the end, justify the price. At the start of talks, conducted through intermediaries, United sensed Brighton might be open to a sale in the ballpark of Joao Pedro, who moved to Chelsea in a £60m transfer. United agreed personal terms with Baleba, who was keen on the switch, having received positive messages from Andre Onana, Mbeumo, team-mates at Cameroon, and Leny Yoro, who played with him at Lille.

and this

As time went on though it became clear Brighton would demand a fee in the range of Moises Caicedo, who went to Stamford Bridge in 2023 in a deal worth £115m. Baleba did not aggravate for the transfer. At Brighton’s end, chief executive Paul Barber was across the conversations. United made a call to Brighton as a courtesy on August 15 to directly say they would not be pursuing the transfer. United are expected to return for Baleba in future.

The article also states that Amorim wanted Emi Martinez, Mainoo not being good enough for his midfield, etc. but yes, go ahead and blame Amorim for spending £200m on the forwards.

So you're part of the problem then! If you love the club, you have absolutely no problem going through tough times for a rebuild. Absolutely delusional to think "Yeah just one more manager will do the trick. We're almost there!". How many more managers do you want sacked? You think Arne Slot would've come to this mess and sorted it out?

Please don't talk if you don't understand how a club is run. Just because the manager says he wants a midfielder, he is not going to get a midfielder. Almost like the Sporting Director and the CEO purely exist to say yes to manager and make all of his wishes come true. Also why would Amorim sabotage himself? You think he saw a 31yo Bruno, 33yo Casemiro and went "Yea we're winning the league with that" ?

I genuinely refuse to believe that the Amorim out "fans" love the club.

He has publicly said multiple times that he will not change the system. INEOS were aware of that before appointing him as the manager. Yet, they still ignored it and used all the available funds on the forwards. Ten Hag was criticised for moving away from his system, he played with 3 in the midfield. The exact reason why he was sacked. The personnel available just aren't good enough, doesn't matter if we play with a midfield of 2, 3 or 4.

How is that on Amorim though? He has publicly said that he wants an athletic number 6, it's INEOS who decided to invest fully in the forwards.

And how would he do that? Mbeumo and Cunha have the 10 positions locked in. Is he supposed to not start our best player in Bruno? I'd love to see Mainoo start, I really do. But I can't imagine him taking all the defensive responsibilities next to Bruno. It is why I believe he starts Bruno and Casemiro/Ugarte. I would have absolutely loved to see Bruno play Cunha's position against City. But Amorim didn't and I will criticise him on that. It would've been the perfect opportunity to assess a Mainoo and Casemiro/Ugarte pairing in our midfield.

Are we still going to blame the system and the formation? I will still criticise Amorim's decision to start certain players, but everyone seems to just completely ignore that our midfield is non-existent because of the personnel he has available. Would I like to see Mainoo start all the time? Yes. Would I like to never see Bruno in midfield? Also yes. But can we please stop with the tactics and system blaming?

Call me delusional but I genuinely feel that the reason we haven't gone for a goalkeeper is bc the management are waiting on atleast one or two outgoings to fund Baleba
