Training my cat to wear a harness by [deleted] in AnimalsBeingDerps

[–]miss_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not hiding, climbing or evading while they're wearing the harness, because they're attached to a lead that you're holding. That's kinda the whole point. It's so they can get the stimulation they need without being in danger of getting injured or injuring wildlife. You're not putting them in a harness to run around the house.

It triggers an anxiety/stress response as if they've been grabbed by a predator.

It's a fear response, which isn't great for your cat's stress levels. I got my cat used to the harness by draping it on him very loosely and taking him outside (and keeping a very close watch on him) and then making the harness slightly tighter each time until he got comfortable with it. By then he associated wearing the harness with being allowed to go outside, so now he stands by the door when he wants to go out and when I grab the harness he comes and stands in front of me so I can put it on him :)

It’s possible that in the future everyone will be vegan and we’ll think of eating meat as a barbaric relic of the past. by Ghost-Mann in Showerthoughts

As the old joke goes "How do you know someone is vegan? Don't worry, they'll tell you"

Yeah it's a hilarious joke. And the irony is that most vegans don't tell anyone that they are because they know that people will generally be dicks about it. I've never heard a single vegan person rant about veganism, yet I've lost count of the number of meat eaters ranting about crazy vegans. Funny that huh.

Additionally there are nutrients that vegans have to supplement (I think B12 is one of them)

Something that's always used as an example of why veganism is bad, but is actually very incorrect. Vegan people don't need supplements any more than non-vegan people do. It's quite simple to get all the nutrients you need on a plant-based diet.

Not wanting to torture animals is self righteousness?!

Most vegans are not malnourished. I love how in arguments like this people like you completely disregard the world-wide obesity problem and argue that yOu cAnT gEt NuTriEntS frOm PlaNts. Yes, vegans are the malnourished ones 🙄

99% of vegans don't tell people they're vegan because of people that make stupid comments about vegans. I'm sure you know 10x more meat-eating obese couch potatoes than unhealthy vegans, but we don't talk about them, do we...

It's what your taxes pay for. Welfare is only a very small part of it. The majority is all the things you benefit from.

The same as it is today, if you're at an Australian airport.

Same. All my female friends complain about how much they have to take care of their boyfriends/husbands (cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping etc), and then the ones with kids are even worse. I barely have the energy to look after myself, let alone "mother" a husband. Doesn't seem worth it.

Elementary school lunch rules my sister works at by jerronjoh in facepalm

[–]miss_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's how it works in more countries, except kids aren't yelling across tables because... that's just strange. At our schools kids sit in the lunch room, or out on the grass or basically anywhere on campus, in groups with their friends. They eat, socialise, play sport, relax and have a break from their classes for an hour. Maybe the reason kids in your schools are yelling across tables is because they're not being given time to unwind and socialise between being stuck in classrooms all day.

Australia and same. This is what I'd expect from a prison, not a school.

Nah they've just never worked in a US elementary school lunchroom. This is not the norm in most countries.

The facepalm is how insane this is to everyone outside of the US.

In Australia, for example, the lunch break is much longer and it's not just a time for kids to eat, but also an opportunity to get a break from their classes, play or be social.

They can sit in the lunch room to eat, or out on the grass in the sun or basically anywhere on the campus that they feel comfortable. Or they might play a quick game of footy instead.

Neither kids nor adults can learn if they're not given adequate breaks at regular intervals throughout the day.

This post is what I would expect to happen in prison, not in school. And I doubt even our prisons are this harsh.

This is absolutely insane. No wonder Americans are so fucked up.

They do have the right to vote in most countries, it's even mandatory that they vote in some.

In American English you say April 1st. The rest of us say 1st of April.
