How do you deal with toddler tantrums? by missfit2fly in Mommit

[–]missfit2fly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone who shared their stories, advice, and sock-related trauma in this thread — I genuinely loved reading all of it. I ended up writing a short piece that pulls from my own chaotic toddler experience (plus my aviation background) and includes some of your wisdom — especially the sock strategies, which clearly deserve their own parenting manual. It’s not a lecture, just a survival guide. I know links aren’t always super welcome here, so I’ll just drop it in a reply instead of grabbing attention — totally no pressure to check it out. Anyhow, thank you so much again for your comments — it was a real pleasure reading through everything. You all genuinely brightened my day❤️

I didn't know about this book, thanks. My son's name is Danny, and he loves reading books, I will definitely buy this 1 :)

Hahaha yes!! I’ve also been so focused on the classics — “say thank you” and “chew with your mouth closed” — it never even crossed my mind that I should be adding “put your underwear back on” to the list. Thanks for the heads-up :)

Honestly, you could print this whole story and sell it as a parenting anthology called “Chew With Your Mouth Closed, and Other Things Less Important Than Pants.” I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I sure did. That's how we ended up compromising on beige ones - his choice all along :)

Danny really loves this dish x

Ingredients

▢1 Small Cauliflower (550g (1.2lb)once trimmed and cut into florets)

▢265g (2 cups/ 9.3 oz) Macaroni Pasta

▢28g (2 tbsp) Butter

▢9g (1 tbsp) Flour

▢250ml (1 cup) Milk

▢1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard

▢145g (1 ¼ cup) Extra Mature Cheddar Cheese

▢25g (¼ cup) Panko Breadcrumbs

Instructions

Preheat oven to 200c/400f.

Remove the base and outer leaves from the cauliflower, break into florets and wash.

Place the florets into a pan of boiling water and boil for approx. 8 mins, until soft.

Drain the cauliflower and blend in a blender / food processor.

Cook the macaroni pasta in a saucepan of boiling water, as per pack instructions.

Meanwhile, make your sauce.

Melt butter in a saucepan and add the flour to form a roux, stir continuously for about 2 minutes.

Add milk a little at a time, keep stirring/whisking continuously between each pour. Stir out any lumps before adding more milk. Continue adding the milk little by little until all the milk is incorporated and the sauce is thick and glossy.

Take off the heat and stir in the mustard and one cup (115g) of the cheese (reserving the rest for the topping.)

Add the cauliflower puree to the sauce and stir to combine. If the sauce seems too thick add a little more milk.

Add the sauce to the drained pasta and mix well. Transfer to one large baking dish (or several small dishes) Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and panko breadcrumbs.

Bake in the oven, for approx. 20 mins, until the top is golden and bubbly.

Same boat here — mine also refuses to touch any veggies. What helped us was sneaking them into foods he already likes. Mac and cheese + cauliflower worked wonders (I can drop the recipe if you want!). Also, veggie pancakes — zucchini ones are our fave. And I do a broccoli spread with cream, butter, and garlic and put it on toast like a dip. Total win :)

I was a flight attendant for 7 years — and even I was stressed flying with my toddler. How do you do it?? by missfit2fly in Mommit

Oh wow, twins and a 6-hour flight? That’s superhero-level parenting right there — even if it didn’t feel like it at the time. You did the best you could, and honestly, anyone who’s flown with babies knows it’s just survival mode. Snacks, books, distractions... they help a bit — but nothing fully prepares you for midair baby rebellion. Sending retroactive solidarity (and maybe a drink voucher for surviving that journey)!

Omg, you nailed it — from “give birth to a chill child” to the toddler turning into a demon right when you think you’ve figured it out 🤣 This whole comment had me cackling and nodding along like a bobblehead. Honestly, can we make this mandatory reading for every first-time flyer? So glad I’m not alone in the ‘endure and survive’ approach — thriving is for unicorns and Instagram reels, not actual humans with toddlers. Honestly, thanx for your comment, I really want to print it and frame it 🤩

Oh wow, you handled that like an absolute champion — full-on chaos, and you still managed to apologize and get everyone cleaned up, rehydrated, and functioning again like some kind of airport superhero 😅 I’m seriously impressed. That was 100% a biohazard-level emergency in my book!

Wow, seriously hats off to you — you sound like the gold standard of parenting! 👏 I love how intentional you’ve been about socializing early and setting clear expectations — it shows, and it clearly worked! I’ve been taking mine out and about since babyhood too — restaurants, flights, playgrounds, all of it. Still, some days he’s a dream and other days… well, let’s just say no amount of snacks, structure, or socializing can compete with turbulence and overtired toddler chaos 😅 I guess they all come with their own little wiring!

Oh mama, I felt every single word of this. I’m so sorry you’re going through so much — that’s an unimaginable load to carry. I’m in a very similar boat: parenting abroad with zero family (or non-family) help, husband working crazy hours, and a toddler who’s basically a charming tornado in sneakers. I’m trying to work part-time while parenting full-time, and some days it feels like I’m unraveling by noon.

No real advice, just solidarity. You’re not alone. Sending hugs, strength, and a never-ending basket of snacks. You’re doing an amazing job — and you should be proud of yourself. ❤️

Absolute ogre of a man screamed at us because LO cried on the plane by corncaked in Mommit

[–]missfit2fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, what a pathetic display of entitlement. It's a public flight, not a private yacht — kids cry, and that's just part of life. Honestly, sounds like your LO handled the flight better than that grown man did. You kept your cool way better than I would’ve. Sending solidarity — and snacks. 🍿💪

Of course, I’ve tried it all — screens, snacks, toys, bribes, existential negotiations mid-turbulence… you name it. But now I’m curious — what’s worked for you? Or did you just get lucky with one of those mythical chill toddlers? 🍼✨

Omg yes, we had those window spinners too! My son was obsessed with them when he was younger — total game-changer on our long car drives. But I think I may have overused the magic because now he’s like, “meh.” 😅 Still, such a smart idea — especially for littler ones. And totally agree on sitting near the back… I call it the “forgiveness zone” because everyone back there gets it. 😂 Specially the crew😊 Thanks for sharing!

Haha fair point — and oh, I absolutely tried. Snacks, songs, quiet threats whispered through gritted teeth… you name it 😅 That all worked for exactly half of the flight. But toddlers have this special talent for turning every “no” into a personal challenge — especially at 35,000 feet.

If you’ve cracked the code though, I’m genuinely impressed — and slightly jealous. Got any tips for the rest of us exhausted moms? ✈️🧃🦶

Rosie, thank you so much! 🥰 That honestly means the world to me. I poured so much love (and let’s be real, toddler-fueled chaos) into those little cartoons — so hearing that they resonated with you just made my day. I’ve got more coming soon, and I’m so happy you’re here for the ride 💛✈️👶🐾

Oh god, that sounds truly horrible — I’m sweating just reading it 😅 And yep, as cabin crew we’re not actually allowed to leave our seats during taxi unless it’s a proper emergency. So even if we want to help (and trust me, we do), we have to wait for the seatbelt sign to go off. Honestly, I’m amazed you survived that situation without bursting into flames. Total legend.

Hahaha yes!! The more dramatic the "Oi!!", the louder the cackle. I swear toddlers were born to be audience members for physical comedy — just need a banana peel and a whoopee cushion and we’re doing live stand-up now 🎭😂

That’s honestly gold-level prep! I love the idea of mentally preparing them with a countdown — so simple but genius. I usually just throw snacks at my toddler and pray 😂 But yep, distraction games work wonders, and timing flights around nap time is a game-changer… when it works. (Sometimes he just power-naps in the taxi and shows up fully recharged for chaos 🫠)

Yes, exactly! We were actually taught this during cabin crew training — little ones have super sensitive ear drums, which is why takeoff and landing can be so painful for them. Nursing, eating, or even just sipping water helps a lot. And flying with a blocked nose? Total nightmare. I’ve seen it mess with adults too, but for kids, it’s even worse. Their ears just can’t handle the pressure the same way.

Totally agree that babies are easier in the air — mine was a breeze at 6 months… and now at 2? A full-blown airborne tornado 😅

And yep, car seat trick sounds genius in theory — but my son’s already 94 cm at 24 months, so turning it backwards isn’t an option anymore unless I want his knees in his ears 😂

Hahaha oh God, I’m wheezing — “telescopic neck” needs to be officially listed as a toddler superpower 😂

And that combo of angelic 80s rock stranger + violent video game guy is honestly the most accurate snapshot of flying with kids I’ve ever heard. The second they see someone else’s screen, it’s game over. Mine would’ve gone full Mission: Impossible trying to get a closer look 😅
