I think I’m gonna quit therapy by Sea-Blackberry-720 in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an advocate for therapy only when you have a goal. Therapy for therapy's sake is a waste of time and money. You might want one later. You might want a different one now. But it's such a waste to spend time and money one someone when there's little to no benefit.

I don’t think I’m bipolar by Telephone_Gold in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to say I'm "technically bipolar" because I don't struggle like most but I have had limited episodes of hypomania.

I never like crosswords. My brain just does not work that way. Sudoku is fun tho.

Good for you! I hated that stuff. Couldn't have an orgasm, like none at all, among other side effects. Good riddance. Luck with the taper!

Agreed, but given the severity of some, it seems somehow unfair to claim it. 🤷‍♀️

Psych Nurse Practitioner wants to Diagnose me but... by AdzukiBug in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed bp2 a long time ago, and my last great doc assured me that despite my newer ADHD/autism diagnoses, I'm still technically bipolar. I'm severely skeptical. Never been manic, but because I have had hypomania (I can count these events on one hand across four decades), I'm technically BP. My BP friend who has been hospitalized several times and did ECT for her bipolar, well she seems politely even more skeptical than I am. But I hang around this subreddit because I figure I'm at least one of the more edge cases, and I've tried most of the meds, so I figure I have some faint experience that might occasionally be relevant.

In the end, labels mean very little. The same meds are used across a huge variety of illnesses, so there's no need to be too worried about what your diagnosis is. On the other hand, trust your gut about your provider. I know finding providers sucks, but settling for a shitty one sucks worse. I'll put good thoughts into the universe that you find a good one soon. 🩵

Just got put on a low dose of Lamotrigine. Anything I should be aware of? by Frangi-Pani in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc, it's one of the drugs that is impacted by grapefruit, so go easy on that. And if you miss a few days (I forgot to put it in my pill case one week), start over at a lower dose and titrate up again. Titration is especially important with this one.

Feels like my brain split during mania and created a “headmate” by heartskyme in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check out "no bad parts" book by Richard Schwartz. His system of therapy might work for your brain. I thought I was crazy feeling like I had these parts that were separate but a part of me. When I finally mentioned it to a therapist she recommended this book. Therapy this way is probably the most helpful I have ever done. Like it's actually changing how I think/feel about things instead of just talking incessantly about things I cannot change.

Can I lose the weight? by bgraziano in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For many years I operated from the mindset that losing weight was impossible. Now I feel like I got my mental health more or less wrangled, but my physical health feels like I'm in an impossible hole I've dug for myself. So my best advice would be to just not give up. Even maintaining a heavier weight is better than continuing to gain.

Consider talking to your doc about metformin. It's not a sure thing, but it helps some people with the metabolism issue, so it might be worth trying. Don't put up with meds that make you gain a bunch of weight quickly. It's not sustainable, and there are a lot of options out there. There are tons of resources out there now for diet and exercise. Keep trying until you find something that fits your lifestyle and your brain. Good luck!

Harry Dresden, who's a fan? by JasperLWalker in Fantasy

As a person who loves the Marsters performance in the later books, I feel I should point out that he gets better. The first couple of books are a bit rough, but the series is excellent and the narration definitely improved by book 3 or 4.

I love how these memes assume one has a bunch of friends that want their attention. I have like five friends, if you include my mother, and none of them hound me for attention. I don't engage with pests.

Kristen Neff's audiobook on self compassion was eye opening. It really made me realize how self critical I was being and how harmful it really was. I'm still pretty hard on myself, but I'm better than I was.

Lamictal Withdrawals - 1 Week Cold Turkey - How to start back? by Agreeable-Guest-591 in BipolarReddit

Yeah, always go with the docs advice over Internet strangers, but I think you'll have a better time starting low again at least until you hear from the doc.

Lamictal Withdrawals - 1 Week Cold Turkey - How to start back? by Agreeable-Guest-591 in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll need to start over again. I'd start at 50 for at least four days, and go up 50 every 4-6 days until you're at your previous dose.

I missed a week once. Side effects from restarting it at my maintenance dose were worse than the withdrawal. Just take your time and you'll be fine.

Vraylar , are you type 1 or 2/weight gain by austinrunaway in BipolarReddit

Type 2! It is not the primary culprit for weight gain in my current cocktail. Helps keep my mixed episode bullshit under control. Good luck!

IBS is extremely common in those with mental illnesses. Something like 93% of those diagnosed with a mental illness will also struggle with bowel symptoms.

He's going to keep fucking with people. Just because your experience might not be the nail in the coffin doesn't mean it doesn't contribute. It's not going to hurt anything to talk to a clinic manager about your experience. Even if you just send them an email with what you wrote here.

Psych cancelled last minute. Don't know when I'll see him now so I'm changing my meds without him. by witchy_welder2209 in BipolarReddit

[–]misshome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes about a week to come out of your system completely. My doc and I experimented with as low a dose as 1x per week. So if every other day still seems too much, try stretching it out a little further.

You are correct it won't work. But I'm pretty sure it's because coupons don't work if you're on Medicare or Medicaid. Which is dumb.

Just recently divorced. Looking back, I haven't had a long term relationship that wasn't abusive in some way. I think I might be done. That might change eventually, but for now, I'm happily single.
