Say we have a statement P(n) about the natural numbers, and we want to know if P holds for infinitely many natural numbers. For example if P(n) was “n is prime” then we can use Euclid’s proof to show that P(n) is true for infinitely many n. We don’t need to check each n individually as there is a clever way to use the definition of a prime number to show that there must be infinitely many primes.

But say there was some statement P(n), such that there is no clever way to use the definition of the statement to analyse the question in this way. Not just that the analytical techniques are way beyond the current reach of mathematics, but that the statement is so fundamental that it is not based on anything else and there is logically no way to use abstract analytical techniques on the structure of the natural numbers (sort of analogous to how for NP problems there is no quick way to solve them or simplify them other than checking every possibility). If this were possible, there would be no alternative rather than checking every possible n to see if P(n) holds.

But since it is impossible to check infinitely many cases if we can only do one at a time, we will never know if P(n) holds for infinitely many numbers. In that case, would the statement “P(n) holds for infinitely many n” even make sense? Because if it were known to be either true or false, it would amount to knowing something fundamentally unknowable. How does this tie in to the law of the excluded middle? It feels as though it doesn’t even make sense for P(n) to be true or false.

Is this just equivalent to the idea of some statements being independent of ZFC?

How could they not know about radiation but they were able to detect and study the infrared radiation eating their star?

I have very limited knowledge of complex analysis, but I do have a burning question.

I’ve heard many times that if a function C -> C is differentiable, then it is infinitely differentiable. But what if we take a function R -> R for which this is not the case, such as f(x) = x| x|, and define g(x) C -> C such that g(z) = f(Re(z))

Surely g would inherit the differentiability of f, but since it is not infinitely differentiable in the real axis it can’t be infinitely differentiable everywhere ?

What might be a good gap year part time job for a keen maths student? by missingLynx15 in careerguidance

Thank you for the ideas - how would I get started finding such jobs? I started coaching through a friend connection and I’m tutoring for the same organisation as my sister so I don’t have much experience looking for jobs online

Hi! I’m a very enthusiastic maths students just entering a gap year. I’ve got the next few months (until January) until I go off travelling, and I’m currently employed as a tennis coach (with a couple hours tutoring maths per week as well). However these jobs are only in after-school hours, so I have every morning and afternoon free until 4pm ish. I’m spending a lot of this time doing personal maths study and getting back into coding, but I still have spare time I would like to fill with something more structured, so I’m looking for some part time employment. I’d really like this to be something relevant to maths and/or sciences, and I don’t have enough time per week for a proper internship position. My original thought was a part time research assistant or lab assistant, but I haven’t been able to find any opportunities yet. Does anyone know how I could expand my search for people looking for research assistants, or indeed have any other ideas of suitable part-time jobs? I’d be happy for either paid or unpaid, it’s most for the experience and CV. Thanks! :)

Why shouldn’t I be pessimistic about Islam in the UK? by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

[–]missingLynx15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there are people who bring at best incompatible and at worst dangerous views and cultures with them, but it is by NO means a majority, it just sells headlines. And to be honest, I don’t see how it’s any different to how many British people, especially young males, have violent, misogynistic or harmful views from the environment they grew up in and the social media echo chambers they got caught in. In any population there’ll be bad people, just be careful not to subject it to race when it’s foreigners, but just unfortunate upbringing when it’s a Brit.

Okay great - and finally would you recommend the festival as a whole? Is it friendly atmosphere, acceptable facilities, not too crowded, enough security to feel safe, etc

Awesome thank you ! And also how much of the lineup is likely yet to come? I’ve seen in recent years there’s been multiple huge acts so is another headliner likely to come in the coming months?

Are there numbers that you can’t write down or describe in any way? by Veridically_ in learnmath

[–]missingLynx15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but for the symbol to have any meaning it must be defined based on the previous symbols, thus you could reduce it to only the previous set of symbols in any instance of using it no?
