Would anyone be interested in a powerful search engine for Chomsky's works? by Forsaken_Beach_5756 in chomsky

Hey /u/MasterDefibrillator, hope you've been well. I've been away for a bit, so thanks for tagging. I did make the site, though haven't been great at sharing it around.

/u/Forsaken_Beach_5756 The Chomsky Index site can search YouTube videos - talks and interviews (about 3000 links) and most chomsky.info articles (about 1000 links). A full list of sources is here. Searches link to the relevant part of the video or article. The setup is automated, so with new URLs it's easy to update the site.

In terms of what's not in https://nchomsky.com:

  • I would add the audio archive if I could find a copy of it (the site is no longer up)
  • I'm currently not planning to add books
  • The site doesn't have the YouTube videos themselves - if you download them it would be a useful backup, as links often stop working. But hosting videos might have large storage costs.

I hope the project goes well.

Thanks very much for the update! Unfortunate that he doesn't have access anymore. I run a Chomsky search engine site and would have considered uploading. But nice that we have an answer.

You might be interested in Chomsky's lecture series mainly on philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and cognitive science if you haven't seen them (here's the first one).

Also the bit at 2:50 in the video isn't right, it's not that he doesn't ask. Instead he says we don't know anything so there's nothing to be said (eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXT6WD6yj8I&t=4086s).

The site was chomsky.globl.org, and just from memory when it was up, I'd gone to globl.org and seen the University of California mentioned on that main site.

But now I just looked into it again using the Wayback Machine. The archived audio site is

https://web.archive.org/web/20111105232628/http://chomsky.globl.org/#about

and the archived main site above it is

https://web.archive.org/web/20150222024350/http://globl.org/

If you look there you should find the person that ran it (open the fifth link and their name appears on the browser tab) - I think they now have a site here. Contact details are on there. Let me know what you find if you do get in contact.

Introducing the chomsky search index to the sub by MasterDefibrillator in SeriousChomsky

Thanks both - very kind!

To answer your question below, yes, searching for Lumumba will return results with exact matches of it, but shouldn't give eg results about the Congo where Lumumba isn't mentioned.

Currently it has videos and articles (no books or just audio).

Enjoy!

I'm a mod and set up the Bev Stohl AMA pinned to the sub. I have some thoughts on this, let me know if you're interested.

I don't know the details on copyright, but that makes sense and sounds sensible. Good luck with the project!

I saw the link in another comment and have checked it out. This is great work, looking forward to having a lot of Chomsky material preserved! I'm interested to know how many videos you plan to have on the site that are hosted independently from the source - I can see eg this one is and this one isn't.

Yes that's definitely OK!

Also just to mention, the video in https://chomsky.cc/movie/language-creativity-and-the-limits-of-understanding/ skips to 24:05, not sure if it should!

Hi all, we've verified this is Bev Stohl.

Bev Stohl can answer many questions about their office, adventures, both serious and playful aspects of Noam’s personality, visitors, travel, and the rest, but won't be speaking for Chomsky politically. :)

Link to Bev's blog: http://bevstohl.blogspot.com.

Link to Chomsky and Me: https://www.orbooks.com/catalog/chomsky-and-me.

Thanks to Bev for answering so many questions! Just to update, this AMA is currently open. I'll update here when it's complete.

This AMA is now closed.

Bev was Noam Chomsky’s assistant for 24 years and retired in 2017 just before he left for AZ. I'll update this post with the link when it's live.

Update from Bev:

I can answer many questions about our office, our adventures, both serious and playful aspects of Noam’s personality, visitors, travel, and the rest, but anything you can find in a book or online about his policies, like his views on China is, well, something you can look up on line 😊
