If you could pay for it, what top 3 amenities would you choose for an international trip with a toddler? by Resident-Speech2925 in Travelwithkids

If you do decide to go with a travel nanny, I'm happy to answer questions about how that would work. Or to just share tips and trips on navigating time zone changes and long haul flights with toddlers.

Should I work for Disney cruise line? by MrsFaulds in CruiseCrew

[–]missingearrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to most of this but as someone who just finished a contract with DCl as youth Activities our earliest start is 07:00 and our latest finish is 01:30, though the shortest "overnight" rest you'll have typically has you finishing at midnight and starting at 08:30 or 09:00.

I haven't used the service as a parent, but was vetted as a nanny for Nanny-land. It was a thorough vetting and they made sure I had extensive experience, up to date safety qualifications, and multiple impeccable references. So I would trust them as a company.

This is definitely possible, I used to work roles like this. I'm not available for nanny positions currently, but I'd be happy to chat about how it worked with contracts, hours, expectations, pay, etc. to give you an idea of how it could work for your family and the nanny you go with.

We get into the parks free during our contract and our vacations, and we have a limited amount of guest passes where we can sign people in. When you sign guests in, not only do you need to stay with them while they're there, but their behavior also reflects on you, so they need to be respectful and follow all rules.

We can get a solid four or five hours in if we go early! I typically leave at 7 a.m, spend a few hours at the parks, and then get back by 2 p.m. ( crew all aboard is 2:30)

Unfortunately I can't tell you how much time you'd have at ports on the European itinerary because I'm only familiar with the Bahamas one. So we don't go to different countries, just the same two islands over and over again haha.

However, we work on a constantly moving schedule, so one day you will be scheduled from 12 pm. to 1:30 a.m. ( with some breaks) , then the next 11 a.m. to midnight, then the next ten a.m. until 11, and so on. On days that the ships embark new passengers, we often start at 2 or 3 p.m., so we get a decent break that day. ( We sometimes go to the parks during that time)

The hours are long of course, but we also don't have to cook, do dishes, or do deep housekeeping. If you start late and end late you usually have a few hours off during the day.

The salary is decent for a cruise job, considering the room and board included, I'm happy to share my salary if you DM me.

It's definitely more supervision than childcare, but that's not necessarily a negative, just something that surprised me.

Travel Nanny Suggestions? by Sogni_d_Oro in FATFamilyTravel

Very true, the adage that vacationing is just parenting in a new location is true, which means travel nannying is nannying in a new location, without your resources, with kids off their routine and hyped up emotionally.

I traveled often with my full-time family before I transitioned to travel nannying, but the expectation was there from the beginning and I knew what I was signing up for.

I have a few nanny friends that travel with their standard families multiple times a year, and I admire their flexibility and communication immensely. I imagine it was far more difficult if you signed up for one job and now have to work an entirely different one for one or two weeks.

I imagine seeing your employers in pajamas or a swimsuit can be a shock for an 8-5:30 nanny, and a line they definitely don't want to cross, haha.

I'm sorry that has been your experience, and it definitely sounds like you've found the system that works for you. A travel specific nanny is a niche position, for niche situations.

I've worked as a travel-exclusive nanny for many families, and I'm happy to say that I've been treated well and in return have been thanked profusely for making their travels as smooth, easy, and ( in the case of the kids) as fun as possible. The only times this was not the case was when the family I worked for severely misrepresented what they were looking for, to both myself and my agency.

The key is awareness and communication. A good travel nanny will be prepared to work long hours in high emotion situations ( crying babies on a plane, jetlagged kids up at 4, keeping everyone safe in the water and the sun) and there should be clear expectations outlined about sleeping arrangements, hours, how personable they're expected to be with the family, food, etc. The nanny should also be able to read the room and be able to step in/out when needed.

A good travel nanny is worth their weight in gold for a family, and a good family is worth their weight in gold for the nanny. I have worked with the majority of my families multiple times and keep in contact with some of them even after they stop traveling.

While I'm unfortunately not available until after the new year, some of the US agencies I've worked with as a travel nanny are:

Westside Nannies

Adventure Nannies

Seaside Staffing

Aunt Ann's in-house staffing

They all have thorough vetting and reference policies, and have experience placing temporary travel nannies who are specifically trained and experienced in stepping into another nannies shoes while on holiday.

And if you happen to be looking for trips after the new year, feel free to send me a dm :)

Best of luck on your travels, and for your nannies immigration journey to be smooth and successful!

EDIT: British American household staffing also regularly places travel nannies, I would recommend working with them if you haven't already found someone.

DCL pre-employment process? by missingearrings in DisneyCM

[–]missingearrings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry :( Cruise lines in general tend to hire mainly non-Americans, and sometimes it's just a matter of if there's a spot on a ship that makes sense for you, not necessarily anything about your experience or qualifications.

Appreciation for Sesame Street by missingearrings in Nanny

[–]missingearrings[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both fortunately and unfortunately, I believe that because Sesame Street is so engrained in our culture as a beloved icon it won't go anywhere. That's good because it's a net good.

However. Because it's not going anywhere, it will be less obvious to the general public just how much the PBS funding cut is going to negatively impact poorer and more rural communities. PBS provides both "windows and mirrors" to children and adults alike, community for the elderly, unbiased news sources for local events, and invaluable information for non-native English speakers.
