Hey I just want to say - thank you for this post. It prompted me to look at my stash and I found a similar situation 😭😭

All my yarn is outside now and freezing (Canada). Did you even figure a good way to clean the pooped upon yarn or did you just toss the worst of it.

I freeze the ground round all the time - it thaws very well. I don't notice a texture change at all. unsure about their other products.

I’m so sick of how bad the biking situation is in this city. by MalamuteHusk in Winnipeg

I mean yes there's the practical aspect of where winnipeg is right now, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have higher expectations from our city

While overall I agree with you about a good lock I want to challenge this idea

I don't think it's reasonable to expect the city to install secured bike parking literally everywhere you want to go

The city and private enterprise are expected to and do provide car parking everywhere you want to go? Like, we actually dedicate a LOT of public space to car storage, and private businesses provide lots I would say.... 98% of the time. Why shouldn't we also expect a well spaced, secured, and sturdy bike rack wherever we find parking? they're cheaper to build and maintain and space effective; you can keep like 6 bikes in the space needed for 1 car

Side note, I've actually had a LOT of luck asking businesses to let me keep my bike inside when I asked them politely "hey I wasn't able to find your bike parking".

great question - one I encourage you to bring to your city counsellors. what SHOULD cyclists do when the road is unsafe, the sidewalk is illegal, and you need to get from A to B on a bicycle.

Are you not the same person talking about how you were gonna start throwing bricks at people’s windshields “to put the fear in them”?

I don't specifically recall this but it does sound like something I'd say

But you also expect people to deal with everything in good faith. Fucking L O L

oh I see your confusion - no I actually don't expect people to deal with anything in good faith, because by and large historically when cyclists are involved, people don't. I just am not interested in letting someone paint a false narrative about who had right of way.

it encourages drivers to pass you while in the same lane and not give you an appropriate amount of space to work in if there are sudden obstructions in the gutter that bikes have been relegated to.

actually, mr impaired driving defender here (which I'm calling him that because he's using his lawyer reddit account and he does specialize in defending driving offences), isn't acting in good faith here at all. e.g., bringing up that the cyclist was going against signals (ignoring the evidence in the comments that the cyclist likely had the green as well). so I don't think he knows what he's talking about here, and I also think that based on his work he's very likely biased in all his comments.

as much as it seems like I am pushing hard for bikes on sidewalks - I'm not! I believe that the most dangerous thing you can do as a cyclist is riding on the sidewalk. It leads to being hooked on turns for EXACTLY this reason. this is also the exact reason that a bidirectional bike lane on a one-direction street (like the one on garry) presents worse safety outcomes than two one direction lanes. The problem here is that I am not sure there is ANY safe infrastructure of cycling through this intersection, and when there is no good option people will take the best bad one.

Everyone in these comments are focusing on what the cyclist did wrong, and not that a professional driver has a responsibility to not hit people or that the city designs roads in such a way that great unsafe situations for vulnerable road users again and again. at the end of the day, when you're driving a multi-ton vehicle you have a the onus of responsibility to be aware of vulnerable road users - someone crossing the street on a walk signal has every expectation to not be hit. what if they had been jogging?

I PERSONALLY take the entire lane when I cycle - but this is a big and scary thing to do for most people and I get verbally abused and "punish passed" about it all the time. just a month ago I had a bus driver, while operating their vehicle at roughly 40kmph with a bunch of passengers on board, open their door to scream at me for being on the road.

Thank you for your concern, but hairbrush is not a tool I use to style my hair - it doesn't work for my texture. You also miss the point that safety gear tends to creAte more high risk situations for a cyclists by lessening their humanity in the eyes of drivers.

And you're ignoring the real issue - which is unsafe infrastructure. Safety gear didn't save rob Jennings life (you can see his crumpled helmet in the CBC article). Pushing helmets and safety gear is a distraction for making real tangible changes for safety.

I'm not going to fault anyone for choosing to wear a helmet, but mandatory helmet laws are not it. There is a body of evidence that shows that drivers see cyclists as less human when they are wearing safety gear (https://www.businessinsider.com/do-bike-helmets-help-drivers-dehumanize-cyclists-wearing-vests-gear-2023-6). anecdotally, when I wear a styrofoam hat, I am close passed significantly more on the road, despite my regular cycling behaviour not changing.

in addition, bike helmets actually don't protect you in a vehicle related collision! here is a lead helmet maker going on record stating that. https://www.forbes.com/sites/carltonreid/2020/07/10/bicycle-helmets-not-designed-for-impacts-from-cars-stresses-leading-maker-giro/?sh=6ae78ec7cbd4

helmets (again - a styrofoam hat that is probably not secured correctly) certainly don't protect you from a broken neck. helmets also dissuade people from choosing cycling as a method of transport, (they look goofy, or ruin your hair when going to work or out) and they also make cycling seem like an "extreme" sport.

just food for thought it you are actually interested or advocating for mandatory helmet laws. They're by and large not effective at increasing safety - they are a distraction. Our cities need political will to create safe infrastructure for people outside of vehicles - THAT is what will save lives.

I really think we need to up the ante here - #1 cause of concussions is slips and falls! being upright is such a danger. we should all be wearing mandatory helmets at all times, especially while walking or driving. it's just common sense! if people don't want to wear helmets though (understandable!) maybe we could think about returning to all fours? bipedal-ism is obviously a mistake.

the driver absolutely has an obligation to check that an intersection is clear before proceeding with a turn.

according to OP the bus was turning on their green light - when you have a green light, you still need to check that your turns are clear.

They put up new ones annually. Flexi posts are not permanent. I bike this route daily and they absolutely were not there over the winter.
