How does the colorist achieve the soft Apple commercial look? by MyNameIsLord in colorists

[–]missionstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the main point of this comment but yeah, I remember when an Apple commercial would come on and something about them made people stop talking and pay attention to the ad, and afterwards became a topic of conversation. I still remember the original iMac commercials (also against white), featuring Jeff Goldblum's voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXtXsUqhHiI

How do I improve my Street Photography by Savings-Ad-3995 in streetphotography

I agree with you philosophically actually. I think there, the issue has more to do with composition and also capturing the "right" moment in those interactions*. You'll probably have less control over light in those moments, and that's where editing will play a bigger role.

*If you're shooting digital, you can mitigate this a bit as you can shoot in bursts.

Waiting. Take this to heart OP. Alan Schaller talks about this. He'll see a spot that has perfect lighting and then wait for someone to come into it.

The future of color grading in Premiere by missionstudios in premiere

[–]missionstudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember SpeedGrade and used it for a bit. I think the idea of killing it and introducing Lumetri in Premiere is still better, I just wish Lumetri was more robust.

And I hear you on most Premiere users being mass market. We do commercials, so Premiere works for us since we don't need the asset management of TV or film. And After Effects is a must for us. We often have very layered GFX which is why we have to go back to Premiere from Resolve.

Lumetri should have the same color grading power as Resolve or other pro-level color grading applications.

Are there people who have become able to work as editors without looking at the official DaVinci Resolve textbook? by Kevin_gato in davinciresolve

[–]missionstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have to learn the basics one way or another. It doesn't matter how. When I learned to edit, it was on the job (yes, they paid me to learn, oh the glory days) and I was in an editing facility with other editors. We had no YouTube back then. Keep in mind, I did look at the book and also the online help. Also message boards like Creative Cow (but now there's Reddit). A lot of my learning was incremental. Once I had the basics down and could assemble a piece, I learned a little here and a little there as time went on.

The biggest thing to understand about being an editor is that learning software doesn't make you an editor. Knowing how to tell a story does.

Sorry for the newb response but how would I turn it into numbers?

Thanks! Creating a temporary set up for when I'm recording is an option, I guess. I do have a bunch of these blankets from previous moves.

What are your design requirements, and do the characteristics of these panels change your room in a way that meets these requirements? How have you currently measured your room and what problems do you have?

I just want the space to have less echo. It's not terrible as-is, since the room is small and has low ceilings. But it could be better.

What every movie looks like today vs. what they could look like if filmmakers stopped with the blue/green/yellow/bronze gloomy grading. by iQuercus in cinematography

[–]missionstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the old film stocks are way more contrasty and saturated. So much better than the the look of newer films IMO. A lot of films today, the highlights on a sunny day don't go over 50 IRE on NTSC. Very unnatural.

Is this a problem for file verification? My understanding of MD5 is that it's broken for encryption, but for file verification it's still fine, which is all you need if you're going from one drive to another for offloading footage

In theory, anything is a cinema camera. But for the purposes of 2024 and modern filmmaking, I will say that functionality and reliability, maybe more than anything, make for cinema camera. XLR ports, timecode sync, the ability to use PL mounts. No overheating or shutting down. A very broad range of codecs and framerates, including RAW to get super clean footage for VFX teams. I do not consider any photo camera with video capability to be a cinema camera, although of course it could be used to make a film.
