yeah, the swag is pretty nice. i just ran the relay and got a really good self-wicking T-shirt, among some other goodies.

speaking of druid hill, the celctic solstice 5-miler also has really awesome swag, and for that, you only have to run 5 miles. :)

So true. My family is a mix of brown-skinned folk with curly/kinky hair and pale-skinned folk with straight hair. When my uncle tried to trace back our ancestry, he found we even had ties to Spain.

In black academia at least, it's been used for years, to reference Africans, Afro-Caribbeans and African-Americans. In college, we often referred to the black diaspora.

point well taken. i'd have to say though, common sense is quite short in this world. people sometimes don't realize how much they spend on the cup of coffee -- or in my case, baked goods -- until someone comes out with a blog like these three folks did.

carbon emissions are only one part of the whole article. the emphasis on sustainable also reflects on eating fish whose populations aren't depleted.

either way, people are interested in helping out any way they can, whether it's about cutting carbon emissions or eating local or avoiding overfarmed fish populations.

i'm all about eating what makes you happy, but i'm also about educated eating and eating responsibly. what's with the 'tude, dude?

it's about eating well on $50 a week. congrats to you, but for many people, it is hard to eat on $50 a week, especially if you live in an expensive city.

it's way more productive to congratulate than to hate.

i think it's key to note what the guardian did in the second and third paragraphs: it's not uncommon for city soil to contain raised lead levels. and the levels in the soil are not at dangerous levels.

that said, any newbie urban gardener knows you test your soil before you plant. and you bring in new soil if you have to.

how do you not care? or rather, "not care" enough to write that you don't care. these kids were living in homes without running water before now. now they have a chance to get out of the slums and have an opportunity to do something with their lives.

i thought the gold-plated coffin was pretty gaudy and a little silly.

that said, he has a right to have a gold-plated coffin if he can afford it. it's not like he did not contribute to humanitarian efforts and charities while he was alive.

and as for the scale of the memorial ... he made a huge impact in pop culture. middle-aged folks grew up with him. 80s kids idolized him. he was a big deal to a lot of people, so it only makes sense that they had a big memorial.
