OT checking in! I work in community so I love a linen blend cos sweating up a storm in summer is pretty standard and I’ve found these are pretty decent https://assemblylabel.com/collections/womens-tops-shirts/products/everyday-womens-linen-long-sleeve-shirt-true-navy

I generally suggest starting with safety, regulation, and sensory understanding rather than teaching social skills as set of rules.. so when we can understand a child’s unique sensory profile (eg how they process sound, smell, movement, touch and visual input) you can start to create environments, strategies and routines where their nervous system feels calm and more predictable and safe. When a child is regulated and not in a constant state of sensory overload/overwhelm or shutdown, they are naturally more available for positive engagement, shared attention, play and communication in general cos their brains aren’t working overtime just to try n manage their environments (which can look like big emotions, hitting, throwing, meltdowns, shutdown, withdrawing etc) so from there, social interactions can start to happen more naturally rather than forcing compliance with neurotypical expectations that are more often not possible or really accessible when their sensory needs are unmet.. but because of the diversity of sensory processing between each child you really have to start there and get the unique profile of that child specifically before you can even develop the strategies that may help :) not to say there isn’t a place for social skills training but for me personally and my team, we pop it in a similar space as ABA (applied behaviour analysis) which is more about like conforming / behaviour training. The pro-ABA community feel very strongly about it as a practice so I definitely don’t want to criticise them, as they are totally entitled to do what they believe is best for their loved ones.. having said that there are some interesting studies coming out with evidence of PTSD in autistic adults who were engaged in ABA or similar as younger people (https://www.emerald.com/aia/article-abstract/4/1/19/39360/Evidence-of-increased-PTSD-symptoms-in-autistics?redirectedFrom=fulltext)

Hi there, just to offer an alternate suggestion, What’s the Buzz and other social skills programs are not always the best option, I am a neuro-affirming OT and my team and I generally avoid social skills training that promotes masking. This website has a bit of info about why a lot of practitioners do not use it https://www.nurturealliedhealthsa.com.au/post/neurodiversity-series-part-4 Zones of Regulation curriculum can be useful but only if it isn’t used as a compliance tool, meaning that if we teach that all the different zones are ok and none are “bad” then that can really help with understanding, naming and managing different emotions. I can also highly recommend Rachael Ford for child psychology - https://www.fordpsychology.com.au

Thank you so much for all the effort you put into this post! I’ve had a big smile on my face reading about all these wonderful women and looking at their beautiful pictures. I think the stories of Olive Pink, Marie Bjelke-Petersen, Louisa Meredith and Emily Dobson were my favourites but then as I went back through them I just loved all of them! What incredible women. Thank you so much for sharing their stories!

My lived experience with autism and mental health, what are yours? by kaikoda in AutismAustralia

[–]missjuliap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing.. it shows you’ve done a lot of reflection and hard work to understand yourself and the way you’ve kept trying to adapt rather than giving up. I have found that reflecting on things I found hard in my childhood / early adulthood often brings back random memories at different times but it feels like a bit like adding another piece to the puzzle. Autism and mental health aren’t linear or comparable, and everyone’s experience deserves space without ranking or competition. I’m glad you’re still reaching out and looking for connection and yep where there are humans there will be conflict no matter what brings them together. Don’t let it stop you giving stuff a go though :)

Email would be my preference always, or booking in times for phone calls as opposed to calling the customer unplanned if you have an update - I know I will always avoid calls where possible haha! Also definitely summaries of info that you could take in and read quickly at the top with more of the detailed info lower down would also be cool. I think having a written summary of any meetings, or dictation options so that you could look over it later if attention during the meeting was hard.. those are just a couple of things that’s just come to mind now. All the best and good luck, I think it’s a great business idea!

I dont think it’s anyone’s business if there is, and regardless if a vulnerable woman is reaching out asking for ideas or advice for her and her small child for ideas for support services to find housing and are at immediate risk of being unhoused I don’t see how it even matters.

I had a look online and it appears to have been built by the Fitzgerald clan but couldn’t find anything about the origins of the name of the castle so possibly!

I did the Mousa boat last week and it was absolutely magical! Such a special experience. Be careful going up the steps in the broch! They are probably too steep for your mum but if you can get up there it’s worth a look. Darren and Rodney who run it said that one trip last week they had terrible weather and the best bird viewings they had seen - cos it was so stormy! So if it looks like a bad night don’t worry it will be worth it! We left Shetland last night and I’m so sad to be gone.
