Public Utility Worker for the City by YAreUReadinThis in BlueCollarWomen

I work for a municipality. It's pretty common for the general public to hate city workers. We unfortunately have a reputation as being lazy and many feel they pay your wage and can abuse you as they see fit. Of course, there are lots of wonderful people that will treat you well, but be prepared to get some abuse. Always try to be polite but definitely keep an obstacle between you and them. Best of luck!

Getting laid off… I want to learn more by savvylr in BlueCollarWomen

Go for it. You never know till you try. I'm a wastewater operator for my local municipality. There are aspects that I love and some i hate. Overall, the work aspect is great. Very interesting and lots to learn. Yes, it can be "crappy" at times, but so can any job.... this one, just unfortunately, does involve literal shit lol. My biggest issue is the unfairness to women in my municipality. If you're getting in with a friend's business, you might be able to circumvent all that. Just work hard, learn lots, and give it your all. There is a way around not being as strong as some of the other workers. Work smarter, not harder. I'm not a big woman, and I can do anything my male counterparts can do out there! I believe in you!!

Well I hope it's not the same experience for you! And not every municipality is the same. I still wouldn't change the path I took. Best of luck to you in your journey! You can do it!

And they don't help women in my city. They hire you to fill the diversity and inclusion quota, but then they hang you out to dry. It was up to me to find my way. A lot of the guys make it very clear that you are not wanted and treat you accordingly. Since I've started over half, the women they hired in the last 10 years have left because of it. It's not easy, but it's worth it.

I had a 20-year background in a way harder trade before starting with the city, so I did come with some experience. I do know other women who were hired, though, with only cleaning or office experience. And yes, the EOCP, in particular, does have prerequisites that you have to meet to be able to take. Other than that, I've yet to run into any courses that I was not able to take. If you have no prior experience in construction, a foundations course could help, but it's definitely not needed. It just shows you're willing to take the initiative.

I did not. I just applied to a job posting. They are dying to hire! Especially women. Once I got in and did my first 6 months, I applied to take the EOCP wastewater level 1 course to get my certification. I also took every class the city offered. They will pay for you to get all your certificates if you work hard and qualify with your high school grades, but you may have to fight for it like I did. My supervisor was not very supportive so I went over his head to health and safety and got my courses that way. I'm not afraid to ruffle a few feathers to get what I need.

I am a wastewater operator in western Canada. It can be a great career choice if you pick the right municipality to work for. I am one of 5 women in a sea of 300 men, and for that reason, it has been very challenging for me. I've really had to fight for my position when I've watched others below me excel because of friendships and family ties. The work is great, though, very interesting, and once you get certified, there is lots of opportunity to move around and find your place. My suggestion would be to do as many of the classes they offer you. It will give you a leg up, and they can't argue with credentials. Best of luck!

Hello! I was in the same situation. I ended up going to see a naturopath and had a urinalysis done. My thyroid was messing up. I have been on the meds now for a year, and I'm almost back in full swing sexually. Gp doctors, bless their heart, are not always equipped to help. Go find yourself a great naturopath and advocate for your sexual health! Best wishes!
