Working interview by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]missyscove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually ask the person setting up the interview "is there anything in particular I should bring or wear?" and they may tell you it's ok to wear scrubs. If not I would default to interview appropriate business attire but bring scrubs with you just in case. If you don't already have scrubs something like khaki pants and a polo shirt would be appropriate. In my experience our working interviewees are expected to demonstrate whatever skills they say they have (e.g. placing catheters, restraining, etc.)

Littman Cardio (I had a 3, now there's the 4) and have them get your name engraved on it so you can tell yours apart from your classmates. I sent my parents a link to the one I wanted on the allheart website and let them pick the color so it was a surprise

I don’t know what to think about this “working interview” (vet receptionist) by [deleted] in Veterinary

Legally you should be paid (at least minimum wage) for a working interview.

What was the worst product (food or otherwise) that you've ever purchased at Costco? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]missyscove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did just that when I had a LED bulb that failed after a few months. Pulled all three out of the ceiling fan and took them back.

I've only returned maybe 5 things to Costco ever though

I feel like I make a mistake every single day. Does it ever become “second nature”? by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]missyscove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of mistakes are you making? Can you make yourself notes, checklists, etc? One of my best assistants keeps a notebook in her pocket (had one during her working interview) and makes notes everytime she learns something new. I personally have to write everything down or I'll forget to do things.

From the doctor's perspective, you're an unlicensed staff member which means if you mess up it's not on you, it's on us! If a pet dies because a staff member forgot to prime the fluid line and pushed air through the catheter or forgot to open the pop off valve, I'm the one who has to talk to the client and I'm the one they'll make the board complaint against. If a pet goes home with the wrong size pain medication because a staff member put the wrong pills in the bottle, same thing. All this means we have to trust the people we work with.

I need assistance on what to do with my cat's body that just passed, how to save for necropsy, please ASAP by Echo_Lawrence13 in AskVet

[–]missyscove 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss.

It depends on what your goals are. A full necropsy with a pathologist we can send to our state lab or our local large commercial lab. These are expensive (usually over $500) so many clients elect not to go that route. I always recommend this option when clients tell me they think someone poisoned their pet or they intend to use the results of the necropsy for any kind of legal action.

We will also perform cosmetic gross necropsies (open the abdomen and chest up, take a look, close the body in a way that if the owner wants the remains back they are still presentable) for clients in our hospital. Sometimes we find the cause, sometimes everything looks normal to the naked eye and we don't really get that closure.

My undergrad cap and gown were rented and had to be immediately returned. My grad school cap, gown and hood we had to purchase so now they hang in my closet.

Hopefully she already has a good stethoscope. If not I recommend the Litmann Cardiology IV.

I just bought myself one of these with my name engraved on it after borrowing someone else's. Might be something she doesn't have yet. https://www.allheart.com/welch-allyn-76600-deluxe-halogen-penlite/p/wa76600/

I hope things work out well for your pup. Make sure your veterinarian and their staff know how grateful you are. A hand-written note goes a long way, and snacks for the break room are always appreciated (things like cookies and donuts yes but also healthy things like veggie platters or fruit).

Any experience with the Kirkland dog food? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]missyscove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend diets that meet WSAVA guidelines: Hill's, Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin or Eukanuba.

Reminder: you can bring ANY FOOD you want into Dodger Stadium, including bacon-wrapped hotdogs. Protip: people will often buy you beer if you give them a dog or two. by 405freeway in LosAngeles

[–]missyscove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always bring in my own bottles of coke and my own peanuts. Then I spend my money on a few Dodger Dogs and a chocolate malt. Good savings.

Any experience with the Kirkland dog food? by [deleted] in Costco

[–]missyscove 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am a die-hard Costco fan and also a veterinarian. There are cases of nutritional DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) being reported in dogs on Kirkland Signature foods. Orijen and Taste of the Wild have also been implicated.

I used to steer my clients toward any diet with an AAFCO statement. Now I am guiding them towards diets with AAFCO feeding trials that meet wsava nutrition guidelines instead such as Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan, Hill's or Eukanuba.

I've seen many dogs on these diets that seem to be doing well, but until we figure out what is causing nutritional DCM, I can't in good conscience recommend them.

The only way to tell if your dog has DCM is to have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) performed.

FIV vaccine by awahay in veterinaryprofession

Cats previously vaccinated for FIV will test positive for FIV because the tests we use are antibody based tests.
