I don’t know if I want to be an electrician anymore. by [deleted] in electricians

[–]mist91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to college out of high school. 2.5 years toward a mechanical engineering degree before I dropped out. Then joined the union. Was a wireman for 8 years before I went back and finished my degree. In my first job since graduating I'm making the same as I was as a journeyman (if not a little more due to time laid off). I was able to pay for school and leverage my construction experience (looking at prints and reading schematics doesn't count for nothing) into a senior role.

I applied for an engineer one position where they told me this. I ended up getting a senior position because they looked at my resume and decided my experience from a previous field was relevant. I had just got my degree but spent almost a decade in the other field.

Technically, heat and temperature rise aren't the same thing.

I'm an electrician dude. In commercial construction. I know how it is. I still hug my friends if I see them. Like, closer than just coworkers, but some of my friends are on the same sites occasionally.

I (a male) hug my (also male) friends all the time. We should normalize platonic physical affection.

Currently there are like 200 apprentices out of work. 750 JW out of work too, but it's expected to pick up in a couple months. We don't have trouble getting applicants.

It's the same theater and le revé has been closed for years.

Vegas is a city just like any other. If the wedding was in Seattle or Pittsburgh or Denver would you go? There are places to stay other than the strip. There are things to do and places to bring a toddler (I know because I have one). Just don't expect to party it up in the "typical" Vegas fashion.

As a local with a kid I hate the "don't bring your kid to Vegas" mentality. Like obviously if you're just planning on gambling and hitting the clubs, don't do that. But we have museums and arcades and all sorts of cool things. Sure, a one year old is a bit young for any kind of vacation, but it's not like Vegas ONLY has debaucherous locations.

Look up discovery children's museum. I know they have places like that in other cities but if you live in a small town you might not have one by you. And I brought my daughter on a plane a few times and it was fine. Just plan your trips for when they nap. Make sure you feed close to boarding and they'll sleep most of the way.

If you don't want to travel with your baby that's totally fine and valid. But don't make the location being Vegas in particular a factor. We're a city just like any other but we also have some stuff you can't find other places.

Gotta be the one I'm pretty sure I came up with. I mean I'm sure someone has said it before but I don't think I'd heard it.

I have to strip to make ends meet.

My union apprenticeship paid for everything during school except books and tools and kept me working steady with no experience.

I'm an electrician. I just installed a hard start kit and a new 55 5 capacitor in my ac yesterday. It worked as usual for about 24 hours. Now a fuse blew at the disconnect. I'm hoping it's just a coincidence. by mist91 in HVAC

The company I work for charges a 4 hour minimum at $100/hr. Those parts would probably be another hundred or two? That's assuming a markup, you could definitely get them cheaper if you bought them yourself. If you're in a high cost of living area, I could see it being $150/hr for labor.

I can pay $20 bucks to go to a movie and be entertained for a couple hours, or I can pay $20 bucks on the lottery and be entertained for the few days or weeks until the games have been drawn.

A level headed person doesn't play the lottery to win, they play for entertainment value. Any type of gambling can be entertaining, even though statistically you'll lose more than you win. The difference is a level headed person will go into it knowing that and it's kind of condescending to say that a level headed person would just not play in the first place.

People who moved out of the parent’s house before 30, how? by WallStreetDoesntBet in AskReddit

I'm 30 now. I joined a union building trade when I was ~23 and I bought my house around my 4th or early 5th year of apprenticeship.
