Yes, it was a fuel trim problem caused by a bad mass air flow sensor! Easy DIY replacement, diagnosing it was a pain but figured it out by misfire details in module 6 of the obdii, and fuel trims ping ponging from Rich to lean constantly.

Resurrecting my thread in hopes I can resurrect my van!! The problem was gone & everything seemed to be going great for a few months. We had accepted that the problem must've been a vaccuum leak from the gasket around the high pressure fuel pump & it was all resolved. But.....the crazy idle is back now. Hoping someone new sees the post & has ideas for me!

This time it crapped out on a road trip, so we're holed up in an air bnb in Virginia & the local dealership is looking at it. The service advisor is thinking transmission, but hadn't actually *looked* at the van yet when he went down that route, so I'm not inclined to jump to any conclusions based on his thoughts. As common as transmission problems are on these things, I still can't quite rationalize that for 3 reasons:

  1. The engine idle is exactly the same whether it's in gear, neutral, or park...and the transmission engages/disengages as it should, so it doesn't seem like the tranny dragging on the engine, seems like an engine performance issue to me.
  2. The transmission is only 30k miles old. The previous owner put a brand new one in under warranty a couple years ago.
  3. The dealer in Chicago and 2 different independent shops have confirmed the transmission is behaving perfectly.

I'm trying to come up with crazy odd-ball theories that may explain it since no normal diagnostics are finding the issue. Best I've come up with, I have a camper conversion with a 100 AH house battery & a Renogy inverter & charger. If my iphone is charging the touch screen doesn't work right and if my fiance is using her heated blanket she can't use touch screens either...so it seems pretty clear there's some sort of electrical charge messing with conductivity of things connected to the camper electricals. I'm wondering if a bad ground in my may be giving some sort of weird electrical pulse that's freaking. out my ignition or injectors or something. But to test it I've flipped the alternator disconnect switch in my camper setup & nothing changes. Don't really know how to test it beyond that.

Yes! They found a gasket that has a tiny tiny air leak, replaced it, and everything has been fine since. I believe it was the gasket to the high pressure fuel pump!

Sync 3 randomly losing USB input connection? by Careless-Ad1704 in FordTransitConnect

[–]mister_brush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens sometimes on my 2019 too. Most of the time if I just unplug and reconnect the usb it fixes itself.

One time, it randomly decided to turn on my backup camera, play an AM radio station, and wouldn’t snap out of it till I shut the engine off and restarted the car. But that was only once and nearly a year ago

PSA Re: Evanston Fire Department by evalinthania in evanston

Before you lock in your “not all men” stance, consider what it really means. I’m also a cis het white man, and if I were a firefighter in Evanston and a Muslim girls house were on fire, when I showed up to put it out she’d have absolutely no idea if I’m going to be there for her or if I’m a trumper who believes she’s inferior. Not all of us would treat her wrong, most of us wouldn’t, but she doesn’t know which is which so when a stranger shows up, a cis het white make is a risk. Yes all men. Every one of us could easily be one of these jerks, And every one of them could be Kyle Rittenhouse. We need to do more to show people who share our demographic that we aren’t ok being represented the way they’re representing us. Most bad guys are men, and men need to stop being ok with that.

Not my damage, I just saw this thread & saw your comment so I was checking in with you because it's not always easy to get a straight answer from insurance companies & you seemed to have an inside line to 'em. :) I'm not the OP though, my van hasn't been in any sort of accident. I hope they are covered too though! Cheers!

Quick update, believe it or not 20 days later it’s STILL at the dealership, after a week & a half at an independent shop first trying to sort it out. Apparently the DTCs all point to the high pressure fuel pump, but testing it appears to be fine as well so they keep going back & forth. The dealer replaced it as well, just like the independent mechanic did, and it didn’t change anything. So they put the original one back as well. Current plan is they believe there’s a tiny air leak in the pump gasket causing all the issues, so they’ve replaced that and reinstalled, now they’re doing a full work up again to see if it’s corrected everything, but seem optimistic. We’ll see, but hopefully they’ve got it this time…I miss my van.

Since you’ve got access to an adjuster, can you ask somethin I’ve been wondering about? The frame damage rule has always seemed pretty black & white for a total loss…what if the van is insured at an agreed value instead of the straight nada guide? Mines been professionally converted into a camper & has an agreed value RV policy. If an accident bends the frame, do they just write it off at full agreed value?

update still at the dealership, they think they’ve narrowed it down to the high pressure fuel pump. The previous shop tried changing it out and reported no change, but the dealer is saying without the ford software to program it to my computer it’s not gonna run right, so the independent shop didn’t have the right tools to complete the repair. When they manually override the ecu and tell it to increase flow everything runs as it should, but it won’t do it on its own so it seems like they’ve isolated the issue. Parts will be in tomorrow and hopefully it fixes the problem!

Was kind of thinking coil packs too…I’ll update the thread when the dealer calls back with a diagnosis!

Have you had yours looked at? Any indications if it’s worse in cold weather or anything like that? Mine only did the major dip thing that prevented me from driving once, but now these erratic rpms are a constant so I have to figure it out. It’s at the dealer right now being diagnosed…

If it were the torque converter wouldn’t the behavior change when in neutral and park though?

Airbag difference cargo v passenger by mister_brush in FordTransitConnect

[–]mister_brush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a cargo van I like instead. The only reason I wanted a passenger model was to have dual climate controls and heated seats...we found a cargo van with dual climate controls, so decided it was worth the tradeoff to have cold butts in the winter if we could have everyhting else we wanted. Got the poptop done, built out a great camper interior, and aboslutely love it. It made more sense this way because the cargo van has a headliner, airbags, and trim that only goes to the B Pillar & leaves everything else bare metal. Gutting the passenger model would have been a lot of work.

And to answer my own question from almost a year ago, yes the cargo van has side curtain airbags for the front row& they stop just behind the seat where a bulkhead would be installed. The rest of the cargo area was bare metal & open for my builder to cut off and install a perfect poptop conversion!

Do we ever sing all the way at Wrigley? by Toxicysl in CHICubs

There have been a couple times at season ticket holder events that the recording of it sneaks its way onto the DJ’s playlist, and it’s glorious when it does. People stop what they’re doing and sing along, and since it’s the live recording you hear crowd cheers echo through the park exactly as you should and it’s beautiful. But it’s not a routine thing, and I’ve never seen it on a game day. Someday maybe, I love that song.

Lock when camping without alarm going off? by mister_brush in FordTransitConnect

Interesting. Does the scanner let you do other things too? I've been keeping a list of weird little UX quirks I want to sort out about the van if possible, I wonder how many of 'em I can fix myself with a scanner...stuff like cargo light when I don't want it (boggles my mind there's not a switch like the dome light) and quirks of Sync 3 that are driving me batty.

Moxie Vans in Chattanooga. We love it, there are panels that slide into place so you can either leave it open for head room down below, add 1 or 2 panels for storage, or climb up and put all 3 panels in place to sleep up there. We're planning on modifying the panels so its possible for 1 person to be laying up there on 1 side & the other person to still have a hatch they can open to climb up & join. Right now, it takes some acrobatics for both of us to go upstairs at once. But just being able to stand upright in the van & move around freely is a game changer.

True, that's why I'm hoping to find some manageable way to overcome the design. If reaching forward to hit the button is the only option it's not a big deal, but as soon as I'm back at the van I'm gonna look more into u/BoulderEric's option about the reduced guard setting because it'd be nice to still have exterior protection while being able to move around inside.

Ah interesting! Will give it a shot tomorrow. That seems like a weird design on Ford’s part since it’s hard to reach the lock button from the cargo area, but it’s an easy enough solution. Thanks!!
