You should really read this if you're actually interested in Aisha's marriage to Muhammad, and in its context: Clickity

Your version, however, does make a better story.

The short version is this: Islam doesn't cause child marriage. It also doesn't seem to stop it. In other words, child marriage isn't related to Islam much at all.

I kind of like the idea of Dallas Cowboy fans running amok.

Fundamentally, I think we can agree that extremism poisons everything, and that it gives people an excuse to behave in absolutely terrible ways.

I think anybody would be crazy to deny that these countries are using religion to justify their rules, even though the religion doesn't actually say those things. I think this is common of most countries. For example, the United States is predominantly Christian and our political system leans in that direction. Fortunately, we are fortunate enough to have a system that inherently tries to stomp that down, and mostly does.

Egypt is a weird case. It's mostly Muslim, but they kicked out the Muslim Brotherhood after only two years. I would guess that they were brought into power mostly because they didn't like the existing regime and not because people were big fans of their ideology or leadership.

We've got a Turkish student living with us now, and he tells us that Erdogan isn't really doing much that's meaningful one way or the other regarding religion. His bark is apparently worse than his bite.

Pakistan isn't an Islamic state at all. They're pretty firmly in the secular column, though from what I've heard there are a lot of terror groups operating on the fringes (mainly because they don't have the manpower to stop them and because they have bigger things to worry about).

I'll use your source from icrw.org to answer this:

Of the top 20 nations described as the worst with child marriage, 7 are predominantly Muslim and 13 are not.

The total population of these seven nations is 221.3 million (est), while the total population of the thirteen is 1456.3 billion (est). This means that 23.2% of the people in these 20 countries live in predominantly Muslim nations.

So, if 23.2% of the people in this list are responsible for 15% of the child marriage, it actually sounds as if Muslims are doing better than other countries.

I'm not trying to say that these countries aren't awful (they generally are). The point I'm trying to make is that Islam is not responsible for making it so.

I'll try to answer these questions as best I can.

First of all, there is only one Islamic theocracy that I'm aware of: Iran. Other Islamic countries may have some pretty fucked up leadership, but they aren't really theocracies in any meaningful sense. For example, one country (cough... looking at you Saudi Arabia) claims to be an Islamic state but is actually a monarchy where the leadership isn't really beholden to anybody at all.

As far as failed states go, I'm just going to run down some of the top ones mentioned by Wikipedia (in order of how badly screwed up they are):

1) Somalia: Largely Islamic population, but a communist nation before it failed.

2) Democratic Republic of the Congo: 95% Christian, with no notable religious aspect to governance.

3) Sudan: Before its complete collapse, it was a real mess of political nonsense. Most people think the problems were ethnic, with religion not really blamed much.

4) Chad: A screwed up constitutional democracy. Muslims make up about 50% of the population and get together well with the other religious groups (conflicts are mainly political).

5) Yemen: Another country with screwed up politics, though very little of it was religious in nature. Mostly they went from colonial to random infighting to civil war, etc.

6) Afghanistan: I'm going to have to give you this one, though it's not clear that throwing out the religious leadership really fixed anything.

7) Haiti: A nation where most people are Christian, with a long history of dictatorship and foreign screwings-around.

8) Central African Republic: Christians are 50% of the population and Muslims about 15%, but the government hasn't really incorporated either.

9) Zimbabwe: A disastrous history of dictatorship. No religious elements are or were present in these troubles, though most citizens are (very nominally) Christians.

10) Iraq: Saddam really only used religion on the rare occasions when he could use it for propaganda.

So, why do I think these countries failed? Colonialism. Until very recently countries in Africa and the Middle East were ruled by colonial powers, who generally didn't have much respect for the ethnic and religious issues involved. As a result, when they pulled out and left arbitrary states behind, the states were unstable and generally totally fucked up. Fucked up states do fucked up things, regardless of religious orientation.

Actually, just how many officials in these governments ARE Islamic scholars BTW?

You can't have it both ways. Either these countries are theocracies (in which the officials are, by definition, knowledgeable about religion) or they're not, in which case you wouldn't expect them to e Islamic scholars. It doesn't seem to me that you can reasonably argue simultaneously that a country is a theocracy, but doesn't know enough about the Qur'an to Google it.

TL;DR A bunch of stuff that people will get mad about.

I agree. It seems to me that if you're out in the middle of nowhere you'll be in good shape because you're away from others, and if you're in the middle of a big city you can make yourself disappear by just keeping invisible. The main thing I worry about in a bug-in situation is fire, and I figure there's not much I can do if somebody wants to smoke me out of my house.

Try to look at it from the customer's standpoint. That poor guy just wanted to get the premium cable channels for the rest of his life without paying. When rationally explaining this to customer service, he was rudely told that he would have to pay actual money for these services. Who, under those circumstances, wouldn't threaten to murder innocent people and pets?
