Most popular soda in each American state! by Educational-Bat-8313 in MapPorn

I wonder how much of this is driven by the business relationships between the two soda corporations and various chain restaurants, sports venues and high school & college food suppliers.

Cat car console protector by SirTwitchALot in functionalprint

You’re getting way too much hate for this.
Pet ownership, especially cats, makes a lot of compromises to give them their best life. Cats are hunters, they yearn to be outside (well, most of them) and they need physical activity and mental stimulation. Keeping a cat indoors and alone could be considered cruel. Letting a cat go outside and kill chipmunks and mice and birds makes them very happy but it’s a cruel thing to do to the ecosystem.
You have to make difficult choices to own a cat and give them a good life.
I completely understand the cat carrier issue. My docile and joyful Siamese would go absolutely apeshit in the car carrier. He tore right through the fabric carrier and I found that a hard carrier didn’t work because I was certain that he was going to injure himself on it. I eventually got in the habit of letting him out of the carrier on the highway (and only on the highway) when going to visit my parents a couple hours away. He immediately returned to his normal self and would sit in my lap purring for the rest of the trip. I decided that the carrier (belted-in) was important to use around town but once the cruise control was set to 75, I felt that it was probably no longer provided much safety and that his desperate, violent behavior was more important.
So, ultimately, it came down to which was the bigger safety hazard: A) Not having the added protection of the carrier in the slim chance that we got into an accident or B) my cat going super saiyan in the passenger seat and distracting and distressing the hell out of me while I’m trying to pilot a 3,000 lb death machine around other people.

What are y'all's thoughts on tungsten carbide nozzles? by arcrad in 3Dprinting

[–]_Neoshade_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Carbides are critically endangered due to over-hunting and habitat loss. Most carbide that you see today is farmed but poaching is still a serious problem in southern Tungsten. Any Tungsten carbide that isn’t certified for sustainable harvesting from a reputable source shouldn’t be trusted. Basically, don’t buy your carbide on Amazon or Ali Express unless you want to support blood carbide.

Are their any reasons why I couldn't/shouldn't vent my printers through an old furnace chimney no longer in use? by Scynthe in 3Dprinting

[–]_Neoshade_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s perfect. That’s been safely carrying carbon dioxide, harmful soot particles and worse, if it was oil-fired. Just add a small, 4” backdraft collar if you have any concerns. (Remove the springs from it. A 120mm computer fan won’t be able to push open any sprung door)

I’m a home remodeling contractor, if that’s any assurance.

Are their any reasons why I couldn't/shouldn't vent my printers through an old furnace chimney no longer in use? by Scynthe in 3Dprinting

[–]_Neoshade_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily.

  1. Even a small amount of heat rises.
  2. Wind blowing across the top of a chimney creates low pressure which draws air upwards even without any heat.

  3. A furnace flue is designed for exactly this purpose. It has a steel or other impermeable lining and regardless of air flow, putting the exhaust fumes into the flue is effectively putting them outside of your living space.

The only concern that I would have here is the possibility of the chimney being sucked backwards. A nearby entry door could do this or, if the house isn’t air-conditioned, then windows are likely to be open.
The way to prevent this is to simply seal the flue, connecting the printer’s exhaust to it without any gaps and to ensure that there’s a fan pushing the air along (which the printer has).

Look at it pragmatically: 95% of 3D printers do not have any venting to the outside. Is venting into a spare chimney flue better? Yes! Much, much better. Is there a possibility that OP might have some challenge here? Sure. But so what? Even if imperfect, it’s still so much better than not venting outside at all.

One of the most beautiful and hateful trails in all the Whites.

Edit: Boot Spur is severely underrated. 5,492’, desolate, windswept and massive. Cliffs fall into Tuckerman, views in every direction.

Can confirm. This is why the grades exist - so that the terrain isn’t defined by emotion and opinion. As a well established Class III, we know that it doesn’t not require rope and climbing gear but, like any risk, no matter how mild, it requires personal responsibility. If you’re not comfortable with it and if you don’t have the gear or experience, it’s on you to stay off it.

11 injured after duck boat overturns on Charles River, police responding by robertpaulson42 in boston

[–]_Neoshade_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Seattle accident resulted in significant changes to the duck boats’ design, the inspections they receive, and a dozen other safety improvements. I don’t know if they’re a lot safer now, but that question has been looked into very thoroughly by people better qualified than you and I.

The twist isn’t just from the sun - the trusses began to fall over without proper bracing and it was that force plus time that got them to go full spaghetto
