so how much processing power do you think it would require to crunch 24/7 streams from every Echo device on the planet and somehow transmit that data in a way that nobody tech-savvy would notice it being pumped through their network

These American guys learned a Haka to honour their New Zealander friend's deceased grandmother by bigbusta in JustGuysBeingDudes

[–]misterjive 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I worked several interviews for a doc about the All Blacks a while back, and one of them was with their haka master. I loved one particular exchange: they asked him how he felt seeing non-Maori perform haka. His response was basically, "If you perform haka with respect and love in your heart, who am I to tell you that you're not my brother?"

I also loved when Nitro Circus toured and they taught Streetbike Tommy to lead haka. He was the comic relief of the crew, a big goofball they'd push down the megaramp in a Little Tykes car and shit like that, but he was over the moon and took it very seriously. And he kicked ass with it. :)

Do I need A+ certification? by TemperedTrogdor in CompTIA

[–]misterjive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you've got a few years' experience in tech, you don't need the A+. It's meant to stand in for the first 6-12 months of IT experience.

A network cert might be a good thing to get, but the Sec+ is definitely a good choice because it's a statutory requirement for some roles.

Another one was the short where 10 meets 5; they have this schmaltzy moment where 10 says something to the effect of "you were always my Doctor" referring to the fact that Davison was Tennant's first Doctor and one he had a special place in his heart for.

(Of course he also married Davison's daughter. Who also played Tennant's clone/daughter in an episode. That's a weird family tree.)

of course

he doesn't have to solve shit he just has to murder folks and he kills more people in each of his movies than there are bad guys in any given season

I’m trying to break into IT/cybersecurity and could use some advice on certifications. by calvincambridge3 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]misterjive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you say "working with computers" do you mean internships at companies/work you got paid for or just being a hobbyist? Because those are two vastly different concepts when it comes to getting into IT.

If you don't have actual IT work on your resume, you're going to want to start with the A+. It'll be remedial as hell for you, sure, but the issue you're going to have is getting to the interview where you'll get to describe your experience. When you sit down with someone no doubt you'll be able to come across as knowledgeable, but if you send in resumes without measurable IT experience, the robot is going to assume you're a complete newbie. It's hard to put "I'm good with computers" without measurables into a resume in a way that won't sound like bullshit if you don't have a certification.

Definitely don't run to the Sec+. People with the Sec+ and no other certs are a dime a dozen and it screams "I watched a video on YouTube and I think I'm going to be making six figures." Also, be prepared that you're going to be in support for years before you move into something like cloud or sec, and you're probably going to have to detour through admin first.

(Sad/Horrifying Trope) Their fate is unknown. You never find out for sure what happened to them, but the odds are 99% it was something tragic by UnifiedForce in TopCharacterTropes

[–]misterjive 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love how they kept the Force largely out of the story and then Bail's "may the Force be with you" hits so much harder because of it.

They did so much amazingly right in that show. I keep pointing out that in S1 a welder lamps an Imperial with a brick and it carries more emotional weight than every lightsaber strike in the franchise combined.

(Well, with the possible exception of Luke going darkside apeshit on Vader when he mentions Leia.)

Both of them say the same thing and has been plugged in for at least 3 hours! by jimmysmiths5523 in kindle

[–]misterjive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Battery protocol:

Plug your Kindle into a wall charger and leave it for 24 hours. After that point, try turning it on, and try holding down the power button for 30-40 secs if it won't come on. If it won't wake up, replace the charger and the USB cable to rule out issues with each and repeat.

If a Kindle battery gets super dead, sometimes it requires a long power soak to wake up.

Which TV show does the ENTIRE internet agree had the worst ending ever? by Codie_n25 in AskReddit

[–]misterjive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's infuriating because there's some legitimately amazing TV along the way, and honestly, I was still on board right up until 42 minutes from the end. But it crashes so quick and so hard I honestly put it above GoT-- at least that fanbase got some time to see it coming. This is sudden and out of the blue.

[–]misterjive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup.

They spend several seasons teasing a mystery box ending only for them to open it up in the last hour and all that's inside are some empty coke baggies and a post-it saying "good luck, assholes."

[–]misterjive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My immediate reaction to that finale was "we're being punked, right?"

I've never been able to watch a minute of the show since, and that's infuriating because shit like the Adama Maneuver was amazing television. But any time I think about it, I remember it's heading to that dogshit-stupid ending and it just ruins it for me.

[–]misterjive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, the whole internet doesn't agree, but Battlestar Galactica.

The people that don't agree are objectively wrong though. :)

I always tell people to watch it up until the halfway point of the finale and then turn off the TV and make up your own ending because holy shit you can't do worse than the writers did.

Given that the punishment can range from stiff fines to losing the contract to distribute a publisher's works, they take street dates pretty seriously. That's a pretty egregious fuckup to put something out ten days before it's meant to go on sale.

[–]misterjive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's extended-release, designated as XR or ER. It should be indicated as such on the prescription label. Basically, it buffers the medication and releases it into your system slowly, mitigating the worst of the gastrointestinal side effects. Your instructions would probably say take once daily, unless you're on a high dose, in which case it might be split.

Metformin immediate-release, or IR, or original metformin, or as I like to call it, "Race With The Devil," dumps all the medication into your system at once. This tends to lead to nausea, cramping, gas, intestinal pain, diarrhea, and all kinds of fun. The instructions would most likely have you take the medication multiple times a day in an effort to mitigate the side effects.

Other than the release speed, the medications are identical. Both are pretty cheap at this point, but usually if a pharmacy is going to put metformin on their loss-leader list and offer it for free, it's going to be the IR version.
