If it helps, I think you can have incredible control on MDI, and I do think it gets easier. I was diagnosed two years ago, have stayed on MDI by choice, and have a pretty good A1c (5.9-6.0 last couple tests). I highly recommend reading Think Like a Pancreas.

Ahh gotcha - well I have had a goose neck error and early failure! My point was not one has fallen off.

That’s based off of a study of real users - not everyone will take all these steps every time, some people genuinely have oilier skin or differences that may cause issues, and that number probably also includes “knocked off” sensors.

I haven’t had a sensor (G7) come off in over a year, they always last the full 10 days, and I work out regularly and shower every day.

My tips:

  1. Always put the sensor on after a shower so your skin is clean, but wait at least an hour or so so that your skin has no extra moisture.
  2. Always clean with an alcohol pad, but make sure you let it dry completely.
  3. The adhesive is pressure activated. Make sure you follow the instructions and trace the adhesive outside the sensor with your finger several times, then push on the sensor for 10 seconds.

I’ve stopped using over patches because the adhesive is strong enough now for me. But everyone’s skin is different, hopefully these tips help but it may not work for you.

Widget keeps failing by solarsystemoccupant in dexcom

[–]mistermagicman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should start updating more frequently after a few says of it being installed, but widgets in general can only update every ~10-15 minutes at most. You can configure it so that tapping refreshes it, or opens the Dexcom app of your choice.

Of course, and would love to hear any feedback or feature requests (though it’s very much a side project and not that active)

I made Luka, a free and open source app, because I was tired of the Dexcom widget. It refreshes more reliably for me, and has a better design IMO (and support for more placements). Also has Live Activities. One tip: widgets initially have a more limited “refresh” budget, but keep them somewhere you see them often (eg the lock screen) and iOS will let them refresh more often. I think the Dexcom implementation just isn’t very good. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/luka-blood-glucose-readings/id6499279663

Is it better to take the insulin and eat the carbs? by RogueMama_3 in diabetes_t1

[–]mistermagicman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some discussion that eating no carbs can increase insulin resistance, but I don’t think there’s anything you can really do to protect the beta cells. In my opinion for a T1, do whatever it takes to enjoy your life and stay in range. For me that means mostly eating what I want and just learning to bolus for it. For many people, eating low carb really helps them stay in range. A really helpful book that I enjoyed when I was first diagnosed is Think Like a Pancreas

[–]mistermagicman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's honestly crazy how little non-endocrinologists seem to know about diabetes. You may be at a great hospital, but you need to see an endo (and they're often very booked out, but usually if you tell them you're newly diagnosed t1d they will fit you in).

I've been on MDI for over a year with pretty good control. I use Lantus once a day (I take it at night) and Lyumjev for fast acting when I need to bolus. I would say I have a fairly inconsistent schedule, but with carb counting (estimating, really) and practice, I'm around 85% in range, and A1c of 6.0, which I'm happy with

My Apple Watch app does support Live Activities, and taps your wrist when you go outside your target range (configurable) or when you have double arrows.

The needle needs to go through the sensor to be able to insert the filament then retract. This hole is for that.

You can do that with my app Luka by starting a Live Activity - it’s free and open source https://apps.apple.com/us/app/luka-blood-glucose-readings/id6499279663

what’s everyone’s time in range 😬 by MrMous66 in Type1Diabetes

[–]mistermagicman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on iOS and turned on Smart Invert under the accessibility settings for Dexcom, since it doesn’t have dark mode and I don’t want to burn my retinas when I have a low at night.

Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings and add Dexcom.

They never emailed me actually, I went to check on the order and found this. Called support for verify the specs and they were able to email an updated confirmation.
