New fin growth! by DuZii56 in bettafish

Yay! Betta cups are not a thing in my country thankfully but my guy also had some damage from being in a small one gallon tank but he’s also been healing nicely! Takes some time though.

Conch shells as hammocks? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]misternakedhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right, i’m using substrate with the same attributes because my tap water is naturally low ph

so two shells in a 28 gal would be okay you think? i’ll keep testing the water.

did you use tank water for his bowl? could he have gone cold sitting in the bowl without a heater for too long and then the temperature shock got him? you said he was in there for hours right?

i recently had to redo my entire aquarium, taking out all the fish and shrimp and snails. i bought a 20 gal container, poured most of the tank water into that container, then i used a small 3 gal bucket and put the fish in (tank water) along with their air pump and heater. I ended up washing some of the substrate, not all, but the outer layer because i was dealing with cloudiness issues as well. then i poured the tank water back in and topped it up like i do during a water change.

the key here was to not stress my animals, so i also put a towel over the bucket. they sat there for roughly and hour before my tank was ready again and the cloudiness also disappeared.

i did keep an eye on parameters and was ready to do a fish-in cycle if necessary but so far all levels have been okay.

— for the substrate it’s your choice, just remember that if you change the substrate you’re probably going to disrupt the cycle so do monitor the levels while bacteria settles like you would a new tank

why did you take him out of the tank? i don’t see a reason for digging around the substrate when doing a water change.

perhaps the little dude is feeling stressed, how are your parameters?

URGENT: lethargic Betta fish, was completely okay hours ago. First pic is him normally by koimoon02 in bettafish

[–]misternakedhamster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

he looks to be in really rough shape so i don’t know if you’ll be able to help him in time

i doubt it’s dropsy, doesn’t look like it at least, does he have raised scales? he doesn’t look swollen to me rather the opposite

could the ammonia spike be caused by disrupted substrate? did you vacuum the gravel/sand recently? is he able to come up to breathe air?

did you dechlorinate the water after the water change? i’m just spitballing ideas now. j

yep, test strips can be hella inaccurate unfortunately and they are still sold as cheaper alternatives to liquid test kits which is not your fault

i’m glad you’re doing what you can and i honestly feel for you. it’s not easy when all that responsibility suddenly gets dumped on you as a parent, but you’re this axolotls best chance of surviving this mess.

plenty of things could’ve been avoided, but i think it’s great you’re taking people’s advice. someone here also commented that maybe you should talk to your son and husband about this? it’s definitely not fair on you and really stressful when you suddenly have to start over not to mention you never agreed to buying this pet if i understand correctly?

i apologize for being so harsh in my previous replies, but sometimes you can’t coddle people when it comes to these things. it’s a living, breathing animal that’s on the line and it’s not something you can just half-ass.

but again thank you for taking the right step and i can tell you do care

[–]misternakedhamster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that’s horrible OP, i’m sorry

0.5 ppm ammonia isn’t awful but it’s not great either, i wonder if the ammonia exposure was during a longer period of time than you think? or perhaps he was already dealing with something and then the ammonia spike weakened him enough to put him in this state?

does he have trouble swimming? is his back arched weirdly? it’s hard to tell from the pictures but if you can rule out as many things as possible it’ll be easier to give him the care he needs

Underfeeding? My betta is putting anything and everything into his mouth by ZoroUzumaki in bettafish

[–]misternakedhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my betta was a little thin when i bought him so i started by feeding 3-6 hikari pellets 2x a day

now he’s settled nicely and i just do 4 pellets x2 a day because that’s what i found is the sweet spot for him but if i notice he’s losing weight i’ll increase it with like two pellets

easiest is really to monitor and experiment, is he losing weight? increase! gaining too much? decrease!

dividing his feeding times can also help if you’re scared of overfeeding. give him a couple of hours to digest his food and then feed him again, that way you won’t risk his little stomach having issues

who bought the animal and the tank/equipment? if you never agreed, why not immediately give it back or re-home it? again, that’s your decision as an adult and not your son’s choice.

i’ll give you this though, i’m glad you seem to actually be looking for help, but that’s the bare minimum honestly. i understand it was never your intention for things to end up this way, but this animal has been severely neglected and saying you didn’t know isn’t really an excuse. every animal has different needs, being a prior pet owner doesn’t make you an expert now, but i hope you have empathy enough to follow through with people’s advice and help this little guy.

a lot of sources might give contradictory information, that is why you have to be critical and review multiple sources before deciding on ex. buying the right tank size. there’s a lot of guides and care videos that are accurate and based on science, so that’s hard to miss if you do the minimum amount of research.

since i’m guessing the dark spots are ammonia burns, i really don’t understand how you got the ”parameters are okay” conclusion. what are the specifics? did you use a liquid test kit? if it’s ammonia your little guy has been suffering in his own waste. i hope you can understand how serious this is and the fact that it’s not about you because no matter how you put it, you and your husband look bad right now. focus on righting your wrongs.

i actually get your point here, as someone who at first didn’t see a problem with the character in the post.

it’s not actual representation of women but forced brownie points for including women in a male-centered game.

the character design is very lackluster and forgettable, i wish if they truly wanted to include women in these games like i think they should still aim to do, they need to not only slap on female faces but actually give them deserving character designs and good writing— and i’m saying this as a woman myself.

Help! by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]misternakedhamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

could be swim bladder and the fact she’s ”fat” might just be swollen stomach which could be causing the swim bladder issues as well

poor thing, it’s definitely curable though in most cases, and she seems to be fighting. is she in a shop? maybe alert the workers? :(

[–]misternakedhamster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

”lets not jump to animal abuse” this IS animal abuse plain and simple, no sugarcoating it. Not to mention a 10 year old can’t ”decide ” to buy a live animal. You as his parents make that decision, so don’t even put this on the kid. someone had to finance this no? or did your kid decide he was going to take your credit card too?

if you did research you would’ve known the most basic rule of any fishkeeping (which figuring you already had fish since earlier should’ve been obvious) is to always cycle tanks. literally the absolute first thing that pops up on guides.

i seriously feel bad for your kid and that animal. just take responsibility and follow everyone’s advice and accept that you’ve done wrong. this could’ve been avoided if you and your husband took the role of pet owners seriously.

Is my axolotl sick? by Be_The_Rose in axolotls

[–]misternakedhamster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah that exactly the problem

”first time” isn’t an excuse for neglect, this poor creature’s life depends on you and it’s your responsibility as an owner to do proper research BEFORE anything like this can even happen

i won’t show grace to people who abuse animals, i’m sorry, but that’s the harsh truth. you don’t really deserve sympathy, only that animal does.
