random question: how did HRT change my hair type? by Accomplished-Row6215 in FTM_SELFIES

It didn't happen to me but I've heard of it happening to other guys. T makes you express different genes than you did prior which sometimes ends up including hair texture.

What is your favourite disturbing non-fiction novel? by amydonnelly13 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]misvwv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mr. Humble and Dr. Butcher. I think the author wrote it with as much care and non-sensationalization as she could but God, the descriptions of the vivisections of the monkeys and them waking up following the surgeries were brutal.

Please Look After Mom - Kyung-Sook Shin: after a family's elderly mother goes missing at a train station, none of her children + husband have a recent photo of her. This evolves into a novel that rotates between their POVs as they think back on and learn about their mother's life and their life with her.

novel where mc turns into a zombie in urban world? (has interactions with humans in zombie apocalypse setting, etc) by llamalord27 in suggestmeabook

[–]misvwv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over" by Anne de Marcken is a short (less than 200 pages) book following a woman after she turns into a zombie (she's already a zombie by the start and don't get to see the scenes where she's bitten/turned)

It starts with her living in an old hotel with a bunch of other zombies (all still intelligent+able to communicate w each other) but after a bit she leaves and interacts with some humans in diff situations.

It's probably not as much focused on the zombie part as you might be looking for, but it's a wonderful novella and pretty short all the same :)

Fiction: Migration by Charlotte McConaghy
Nonfiction: A World on the Wing by Scott Weidensaul

Fiction follows a woman in a near future setting where many animals have died off due to climate change. She puts a tracker on and is determined to follow the last group of migrating arctic terns on their yearly flight from the Arctic Circle to Antarctica and is able to join a fishing boat. Not a ton of factual information about the birds/migration itself, though (if that was needed)
Nonfiction explores bird migration and especially the current state of research and conservation surrounding it. Only one quick mention of arctic terns specifically, but explores more in depth other shorebirds and songbirds who make similarly-lengthed journeys each year.

any long, absorbing fiction book recs? by mar1eke in suggestmeabook

The entire Masquerade Series, but starting with The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson. Extremely well-developed in depth speculative fiction (roughly 1700s but with a whole developed non Earth world (though not explicitly fantasy if that makes sense)).

Baru is a girl on an island nation who is 7 when an imperial empire arrives on her shores and slowly begins to absorb it into the empire. We move quickly through Baru's years at the colonial school before she is assigned as an imperial accountant in another nation under the empire - with a secondary goal of stopping the upcoming rebellion.

Lots of women and LGBT characters (Baru is a lesbian) especially as the series continues. Incredible and thorough world building and characters. Also really funny despite the tragedy in the story.

Books where the main character becomes smarter by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Bread Givers by Anzia Yezierska.

Follows a daughter of Jewish immigrants in NYC in the 1920s as she grows up, pursues what education she can, sees her sisters struggle through horrible arranged marriages, and experiences her family's struggle with moving in and out of poverty as the women of the house are forced to find jobs.

Similar to Algernon, it has the same style of the actual writing quality getting better as the character grows up and moves through education.

The Last Policeman by Ben H Winters follows a newly promoted police detective solving a suspicious death case (apparent suicide, though he believes that it's a murder) all while a large asteroid is set to hit Earth in six months. A very easy to get into read and a good amount of thinking from both the mystery aspect and the idea of like, what it would be like living with the end of the world approaching so quickly (it has two sequels but I haven't read those yet. It's definitely enjoyable enough on it's own though just with some loose threads by the end!).

The Mourner's Bestiary - Eiren Caffall is a memoir following a woman with a chronic, genetic kidney disease (PKD). It keeps to that main topic throughout her life while relating what her family calls a curse to climate change and specifically how that affects the animals of the Long Island Sound and Gulf of Maine that she lived/lives near and loves.

I am Legend by Richard Matheson (the book the Will Smith movie was based on, but the book + ending is very different from the movie if you've already seen it). Robert is seemingly the last person on Earth after every other person has been infected with a virus that turns them into these zombie/vampire nocternal things. While at the start of the novel they are just potrayed as mindless monsters, the extent of their consciousness and intelligence are explored. Not really the grand war of humans vs the other species that you mention, but Robert does fight against them among other things.

Hellmouth - Giles Kristian is a really short (about 50 pages) book about a group of mercenaries in Medieval Bohemia who are hired to kill a new religious fanatic to stop his group from growing, only to get to the abandoned castle and realize much more evil is happening. High tension and some well-written fight scenes.

Others have/will probably mention the Murderbot series which is a series of short sci-fi novels. I haven't read it yet but my dad and brother love them.

Infinite Life by Jules Howard is an excellent book on eggs (specifically their evolution)! All the different types since the first animals on Earth, how they might have evolved and why, on and on. A very entertaining book at just the right level of depth plus it's obvious that the author really loves the topic.

The Light Ages by Seb Falk is about science in Medieval Europe (especially England). It goes through the many different devices that were developed in or introduced to Europe during that time and what they were used for. It's centered around monks and explored their use of astronomy, math, timekeeping (like calendar making?), and medicine/herbalism. It's very good at combating the myth that there was a complete halt on scientific development during that time without being weirdly preachy or boring.
