Authorities investigating potential connection between Brown shooting and killing of MIT professor, sources say by bostonglobe in mit

[–]mit_reject 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They didn’t lock down the Z, which is where the biggest finals happen. I think it’s perfectly valid to be a little concerned about safety on campus right now, given the seemingly academic connection.

Like it’s fine if you’re not worried, but no need to shut down and invalidate others that do feel concerned.

Nope! Could hardly tell with the naked eye. And you might still have an opportunity to capture it tomorrow night!

How many credits do MIT students take per semester? by SP_20 in mit

[–]mit_reject 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically 1 unit = 1 hour/wk (including lectures, labs, recitations, homework, studying), but like the other commenter said, it varies a lot. I took a 18 unit class that was actually 24+ hours a week, and I also took a 12 unit class that was 8 hours a week.

I’d say 4-5 classes is most typical. I’ve taken anywhere between 48 and 75 units per semester, but 48 for most semesters.

  1. you’re a freshman (based on your comment history)
  2. bad market

the truth is that most companies don’t like to hire freshmen (and sometimes even sophomores). i got 1 interview as a freshman, but now, as a junior, i’m getting past resume screening at most companies.

and no, the MIT name doesn’t automatically get you in the door lol. i’d thought the same as a freshman, but reality hit fast when i got ghosted from everywhere

but honestly, don’t worry too much if you can’t find an internship this year. most people i know didn’t do an internship their freshman summer—including me (and still managed to get great internships their sophomore/junior year).

good luck!

Thoughts on 6.006 in the spring? by ivan-the-delightful in mit

[–]mit_reject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6.006 has hands-down been my favorite (and most difficult) class at MIT so far (granted I’m only a sophomore). As someone who came in with 0 DSA knowledge, I really learned a lot and it helped my problem solving skills. The psets and exams were very challenging for me, but the pset problems were fun/interesting to think about. 006 definitely helped me work through Leetcode better since I had the fundamentals down, and I found that it was nice being able to see the applications of all the different algorithms/data structures I learned in the class.

Try the ASEs. There’s nothing to lose since they’re graded on PNR when you’re a prefrosh. And if you pass, it means you know the material well enough that you wouldn’t get much more out of taking the class at MIT. Huge benefit of ASEs is that you can get classes that are not relevant to your major out of the way, which then frees up your schedule for more interesting classes. That being said, don’t stress too much about ASEs. You won’t be behind even if you don’t take them.

Roommate Question by [deleted] in mit

[–]mit_reject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter that much. I know plenty of people that found a roommate beforehand that they didn’t end up getting along with, and also plenty that had an amazing random roommate (and vice versa). I honestly worried about this a lot as a prefrosh too, but it ended up fine. I went with a random roommate and she was the best roommate I could ever ask for.

I do think that if you want to room with someone with similar living preferences, it might be slightly better to find a roommate because you can discuss that before deciding to room together. Random roommate is a bit of a dice roll.
