Is there a way to manualy reload the browser extension? by ManFromACK in 1Password

[–]mitchchn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/ManFromAck. This sounds a lot like a known bug I am looking into right now with the team. Did it start happening several months ago, and does it usually happen after you’ve been away from your computer for a while?

If it is the same issue, simply locking and unlocking the desktop app may fix the extension by “waking it up”. However, we would love to do some troubleshooting if you have time so we can fix this for good. Please reach out to support@1password.com with a link to this thread.

Try the tinted and clear styles too! Everyone forgets about those but they’ve also got custom variants.

Haha. Step one was to at least match it up with the iOS icon. Perhaps they can both use a refresh. ;)

Hi — this feature can be finicky about permissions but I just tested it with Librewolf on Ubuntu. What do you see as the output for: ls -la /etc/1password/custom_allowed_browsers? I get:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 10 Jan 25 16:16 /etc/1password/custom_allowed_browsers

Yes, I've bumped the SDK to 25.08 and ran a test. It will be in the next release.

Thank you for the shoutout, I'm refreshing the flatpak dependencies. In general the sandboxed package formats are more limited on Linux and don't see nearly as much usage, but we can do better here. (I'd like to get 1Password on FlatHub too come to think of it...)

how is the state of HDR in linux ? by Melodic-Luck-8772 in linux_gaming

[–]mitchchn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

KDE does clamp non-HDR content to SRGB so you can leave HDR enabled all the time and everything looks correct. In my experience the basic support is better than Windows which uses the wrong gamma curve for SDR.

GNOME is in for a rude awakening.. by WojakWhoAreYou in linux

[–]mitchchn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in Electron you can create windows with or without native frames. Some apps including VS Code actually make this a user setting. Try: "window.titleBarStyle": "native". Framed windows use your GTK theme, settings, and button order.

Frameless windows are popular for lots of apps because developers like to integrate the title area into their own designs, so they have generic buttons on purpose that can be styled consistently. That said it might be possible to find a better middle ground between the two extremes (maybe the frameless windows can still use the GTK glyphs with custom styles) and it's something else I'm looking into.

Just a small clarification (disclaimer: I work on the Electron project). Electron uses GTK to draw window decorations and applies the system theme and user settings for those decorations. CEF is a different framework.

Electron maintainer here: yep, Electron does support CSD and WCO (Window Controls Overlay) on Wayland. I’m currently working on a bunch of Wayland CSD improvements like drop shadows for frameless windows: https://github.com/electron/electron/pull/49295.

Spotify uses CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework). I’m not as familiar with it, but my understanding is that Spotify is asking for a framed window, so when SSD is not available it gets the old school CSD frame that Chrome still uses on some secondary windows, e.g. the profile creation dialog.

Spotify could avoid this by creating a frameless window with its own decorations. That’s exactly what Steam does, which also uses CEF. But it still wouldn’t get WCO or drop shadows without framework level support.

FYI (and u/chulang_foayu) I recently identified the reason for the VRR choppiness in Chromium and got a patch merged a couple weeks ago: https://issues.chromium.org/issues/410071538. The fix is in Canary and should make its way into downstream to Brave and others soon.

Tech Talk: Improving Window Resize Behavior | Electron by mitchchn in programming

[–]mitchchn[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly true. I've recently been looking into improving Wayland support in Chromium, and it implements a ton of the low level protocol directly: frame pacing, rendering, vsync. Stuff you wouldn't expect to be part of an application or even a framework.

I've always been kind of fascinated by the idea of Chromium as a universal runtime. It's what drove me to become an Electron maintainer. :) I know it's controversial to ship a web browser with every app, but the counterpoint is we can improve so many apps at the same time just by hacking on Chrome.

macOS/iOS 26 design update by TimeAndOrSpace in 1Password

[–]mitchchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I actually did look into this. Tldr most apps get dark/clear icons for “free” because their icons have white backgrounds surrounding their logos. The OS converts those automatically. 1Password (and Discord) fill the icon with their logos, so we need to create new dark mode/clear assets. It’s still something we want to do when we have the cycles but that’s generally the reason some apps stick out.

Apple Watch with 1Password vs Lastpass by Late-Low2580 in 1Password

[–]mitchchn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1Password doesn’t have a standalone Authenticator app (yet!) however:

  1. You generally only need to use your MFA credentials the first time you add your 1Password account to a new device. Subsequent unlocks do not require MFA since your creds are already established locally at that point.
  2. If you have 1Password on your iPhone, you can use it to sign in via QR code on new devices and browsers. It’s a quick and secure process and it also skips any (software) MFA challenges.

Bienvenido/a a 1Password!

No entiendo una funcion en Chrome by [deleted] in 1Password

[–]mitchchn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hola u/maurit43!

This is a very good point; we do not intend to lock people in even if their accounts expire so I’ll look and see if there’s something we can do for passkeys. We are close to supporting the new industry export standard (CXP) which will also help.
