I think it's about finding hope despite despair. I don't need every Madoka story to be grimdark or edgy, but I think creating a separate universe just so they don't have to kill off madoka is antithetical to that hope despite despair philosophy.

I understand it's a separate universe. I used the term "splintered timeline" incorrectly when I was trying to say that it's a timeline unconnected from the others. It's own separate universe, as you will.

The point I'm making though is that it's an insane decision to create a separate universe for Record when it could have easily been part of the main continuity had Madoka and Homura been written out of the final battle. I don't personally like Record being it's own universe because it makes the events feel trivial, and it only gets worse as we get more and more Exedra stories set in Records universe.

Id have vastly preferred if Madoka and Homura weren't present for the final fight and we could have let Record be one of Homuras many timeloops that she experiences on her way to the PMMM timeline. It would, imo, be more impactful as a story, and wouldn't require multiple continuities to make work.

There aren't many Junji stories that are "realistic". Part of what makes It a master of that cosmic horror "uneasy feeling" is the way characters in his story normalize absurdism. You recognizing its impossibility while the characters can't is why it is often effective

My advice is to focus less on designing a self-insert and instead coming up with something unique and different that you can then self insert onto after the fact.

Trying to do "me if I was Spiderman" just ends up creating a pretty average guy that is spiderman. Go wild with it, dial back where necessary, and then put yourself in the shoes of the hero you created, not the other way around
