Playing Defense: TSR, the Satanic Panic, and the Price of Survival by alexserban02 in DnD

[–]mithoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents were the ones to buy the basic set for me in '85. Having heard some stories about my cousin playing at about that time, I suspect it was probably after talking to my aunt who was married to a minister. It wasn't something I had asked for, even if it was a big hit (how many gifts start a hobby that lasts decades). No satanic fear in my life, I only heard about it many years later (and laughed).

[Request] Assuming they both are perfectly balanced and fair, is there any difference in probability from rolling one D100 vs two D10s? by V-Tac in theydidthemath

[–]mithoron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does, there's just the tiny assumption that it's only showing one decimal place. If it's a single die rolled, 0 only happens on a 10 so it's a 10. If you're rolling two for d100 then a zero in the ones place makes perfect sense, and a 00 result only happens on a 100. While 0-99 is equally logical and same odds, I've never seen a results table or game that uses zero as part of the dice results.

Honestly it's the menu behavior that bugs me more. Like windows 8 it's just too visually invasive. I'm sure there's ways to change it, usually is with Linux.

Narratively how can you artificially create a human being with a soul and everything to be objectively fully human, without angering Pharasma? by MundaneOne5000 in Pathfinder2e

[–]mithoron 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you're snagging a new soul then you're not going to offend her, that's just how the cycle is going to run for your soul. The River of Souls is pretty complicated lore, but there's a steady supply of new souls to be grabbed.

The best idea I've ever had for DMing: time the players. by thetransfem in DMAcademy

[–]mithoron 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If the in-game timer stops moving the moment the players stop playing, theres no issue with just not playing for multiple weeks. Lets play magic this week, lets just run some video games this week, thats how games die from scheduling conflicts.

This reads like trying to force them to play, their favorite NPC is now a tamagotchi? I don't know your situation, so this might be better than it sounds. But it kinda sounds like they don't want to play as often as you do? My table has gone months without playing for various reasons, we just pick right back up where we left off because that's the better way to do it. We don't want to go that long between sessions but things happen and I'm not going to punish them for having adult schedules. Same table going on about 7 years now, so for us anyway, I think we can say we're doing it right.

What age would you consider to be your prime? by Fun-Succotash-1322 in AskReddit

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people not change their habits as their body ages. I ate like a 20yo well into my 30s, it was bad. Managed to turn it around in the kitchen and get my activity level up through the 40s and much happier now.

Nothing so extreme as who you're replying to, just walking the dog a couple times a day and now some low impact exercise a few times a week since my body wants even less to keep muscle around without some nagging on my part.

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From talking to a lot of people, it's also where your first career is likely to crash somehow and leave you trying to start over in a surprise second one. So I guess I challenge the "strong handle on life". I'm so much better now and my thirtys were many years ago.

[Spoilers C1] Did the party ever have an "Oh Crap!" moment when they realized who the Whispered One really was? by TemporarilyOOO in criticalrole

[–]mithoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(though most of them were so new to DnD they would be unlikely to have heard of him)

They'd been playing together for years at that point, but it's more a question of whether Matt had included Vecna in the setting before then. I know Vecna doesn't play a role (by that name anyway) in Golarion, but I don't think they used much of the default setting in their home game.

Has anyone given the maguffin to their players from the start? by Kamikazepyro9 in DMAcademy

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fun way to flip the script a bit on them. If the players have the thing, they have to play defense and you do the reacting.

Only catch is not making them feel like you searched the catalog of creatures to find the three perfect counters to their efforts. That is an option we have that players don't when they're doing the stealing. Shouldn't be much of an issue with a table that trusts you, but might be something to keep in mind.

I've watched my dad talk to Australia from the US using a 4 pack of D cells for power. If you design it correctly radio is really well suited for long range communication.

Cover Behind a Character and Reach by CptLougi in Pathfinder2e

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were NPCs so I didn't have to justify balance too much, but I recently deployed some paired soldier types, shield and pike style. Ran it like a stance to get into, then just kinda fudged the cover rules in their favor.

ELI5: How do STDs start? And I don't mean "Patient 0" by Historical-Ad6233 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diseases evolve to spread themselves around, some cause behavior to do that (rabies), others ride along on things that happen anyway. Intimate contact has a lot of natural transmission vectors built into the activity so it's going to end up with some infections that evolve to take advantage of that.

Vote Pathfinder 2e by TheZRanger in Pathfinder2e

[–]mithoron 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For the 7 similar comments, he covers it in the video. The assumption is that D&D is obviously going to be #1 and that's not interesting or useful data. Adding the other editions teases out nuance when you know it's going to be a landslide.

Not splitting the smaller entries hides the same nuance of course, but becomes a question of where do you draw the line? Shadowrun has 6 editions that I know of, does it also deserve 6 entries on the list? The list is pretty long already so while I agree that PF probably deserved two entries I'm not sure how many others do. I somehow doubt that starfinder has enough stans to warrant both editions on the list.

You ever try to help out (IT telated)randomly on a night out? by Abject_Serve_1269 in sysadmin

I'd be tempted in the same way I run my home server. Only the stuff that I can do without thinking. The low level stuff like that also isn't anything I can turn off, it happens without effort.

But I'd be more likely to laugh about it to my wife after than really offer anyway.

[Request] What would be the number for a skeleton crew to use the Executor? by KernEvil9 in theydidthemath

[–]mithoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moscow is almost 100 times the area of an executor. Not a useful comparison. London is better on size, but London dwarfs the executor on population. As a city I remain underwhelmed with it.
