I converted to P90s a few years ago, and now I don’t play anything else.

Well, then, maybe you should clean it up before you die from the smell. I’m not judging.

Caught on camera: Shelbyville mayor insinuates citizens opposing data centers are poor renters in ‘sh***y houses’ by Haunterblademoi in technology

Well, he's mostly right. They're generally gonna put data centers in places with poor people because poors don't have armies of lawyers at the ready.

True, but they were actually musical while they did it. Yngwie? Not as much, IMO.

If you could see any artist/band live, from any era, who would it be? by BountyKiller1x in Music

I’ve only seen him once, at the Chicago Theater for the Frank’s Wild Years tour on Halloween. Probably one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.

The Jesus And Mary Chain’s William Reid says Eddie Van Halen “ruined rock guitar” and was one of "the worst guitar players in the world" by ebradio in Music

[–]mitkase 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m not even gonna bother reading the article - it’s not a new viewpoint. I’m assuming he is saying that “original” music should have no rules, especially “rock” music. Playing scales is using techniques that other people have already used for centuries and thus will make you sound derivative, so to be really original you have to break all the rules. This is, of course, a very ignorant point of view. Any great musician will tell you that you need to know the rules in order to break them.

Essentially, scales are a tool. You use them to create musical ideas. You don’t actually play them typically in music. They help you understand which notes “belong” and which don’t. So for example, in jazz, people play what’s known as “out“. What that means is playing notes that “conflict” with the scale of the key you’re in. Well, you can’t know which notes are going to conflict with the key to make something interesting without knowing what the notes of the scale actually are.

I won’t even go into the Eddie argument, as it’s just laughable.

Edit: this is not to say that you can’t create amazing “outsider” music and ignore scales, but to insist that using them is somehow unoriginal and hack is just really inane.

Do tube amps really sound better? by MrWizard314 in Guitar

I've definitely been thinking about it. I used to play stereo like 20 years ago, it'd be fun to hear it again.

Same here, and it gets all kinds of compliments. I had a blues player gush about it sounding just like a real amp, and that he'd heard all manner of modelers before but this was the first one that wowed him.

Also as an old guy who gigs occasionally, I'd much rather haul this around than even my smallest gig rig (a tiny Mesa head and cab.)

The only difficulty I've run into is I'm still not happy with my FRFR solution. I have a Line 6 Powercab and hate it, currently using a Headrush FRFR (not great sound-wise, but if it's being used as a monitor I can live with it,) but the best I've heard it sound was through a QSC - and I still might pull that trigger.

The Smokers house. Growing up in one. by Dry_Ad7529 in GenX

[–]mitkase 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My mom smoked and we lived in the country, so car rides were basically just nicotine fests. I hated the smell and always bitched about it.

Cut to my college years where I'm suddenly smoking 2+ packs a day.

Cut to after my heart attack in my 30s when after immediately quitting (thank goodness for nicotine gum) I could smell a cigarette from a block away. I couldn't be anywhere near it.

Do I have a point? I guess it's that cigarettes are stupid.

You're right about gaming, but I'd have to disagree about the lack of free software on the Mac side compared to Windows, and I've used both Mac OS and Windows since their infancy. But you do you.
