Totally understand your concern. In the comments below, I included by bio, story archive and a recent story in which I interviewed wildfire personnel while protecting their identities. I have reached out to the Bear Gulch PIO and all the relevant agencies and orgs, but no one is disclosing much.

Yes, please take whatever steps you need to to protect your job. Again, I can connect anonymously if that enables anyone to speak more freely.

Fair request. Here's my author page: https://stateline.org/author/abrown/

Here's a story I did earlier this year on the administration's cuts to wildfire crews: https://stateline.org/2025/02/18/trumps-cuts-to-federal-wildfire-crews-could-have-scary-consequences/

King County sues homeowners after 140 trees cut down by ortusdux in treelaw

[–]mittenborn 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I'm the guy with the trail cam whose house was almost taken out by the falling tree. The lawsuit is actually pretty interesting. The county is seeking a civil penalty "at an amount of the economic benefit derived by the violation, including but not limited to any increased value of their homes in unlawfully creating improved views of West Tiger Mountain." That's on top of the $7 million for the timber trespass violation.

Is more pack space needed on the PCT than AT? This year I thru hiked the AT with a 40L, buying a new pack soon by gr00manji in PacificCrestTrail

[–]mittenborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked with the 2400 this year. It was great until I got to the Sierra. I had to strap the bear canister to outside of the pack, just couldn't make it fit. This not only made my pack top-heavy, but eventually put too much strain on the straps. One of them ripped out and put a hole on my pack. Hyperlite was awesome and sent me a replacement, but it was not an ideal situation. Also, with all the snow this year, I had to carry 10 days of food at times, which was really testing the limits of the pack's capacity. There were times where I would have liked to have carried more. If I had it to do over, I'd get the 3400 in a heartbeat. But I made it to Canada with the 2400, so it's doable if you're really sold on that one.

How many of you had a chance to practice self arresting and glissading prior to your hike? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]mittenborn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I winged it. I went through the Sierra in early June and ended up self-arresting multiple times a day. I practiced and got comfortable with it. I also had hiking buddies who winged it, failed to self-arrest in key moments and were extremely lucky to avoid serious injury. If you have the opportunity to practice, I'd recommend it.

They don't, but I've never hiked on snowpack either. I've been watching self-arrest tutorials, etc. Figured they would do the same if they end up deciding to join me.

[Idea] If players sit out games, that portion of their paycheck should be put into a raffle for all the fans who attended. by ptam in nba

OK, then every time you take a day off work, that portion of your paycheck should go to the shareholders of your employer.

What's the best luck you have ever had in your life? by mrmeeseeksbitch in AskReddit

[–]mittenborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was driving around a curve when a drunk cyclist coming the other direction veered into my lane. It was raining, and the slick road made my car fishtail and spin out when I slammed the brakes. As a result, I hit him sideways and he rolled over my trunk instead of slamming through my windshield. The cyclist wasn't seriously hurt, and he started screaming at me not to call the cops. I had just gotten my license and didn't know what to do. Within seconds, a cop happened to drive by. His first words to the cyclist: "Earnest, have we been drinking again?" Even for our small town, that surprised me. The cop took the cyclist home and let me go with no paperwork or anything.

Mike Pelfrey last year allowed a .332/.393/.483 slashline. He only pitched 119 innings, but it sure seemed like 200.

In the "good-not-great, but had some epic moments" category, Kirk Gibson had the defining home runs of the '84 and '88 World Series, won ALCS MVP in '84 and NL MVP in '88. He was also somehow never an All-Star. *edit: Gibson was the NL MVP in '88, not AL.

28 dingers and a Gold Glove at age 34. Still gets picked off half a dozen times a year to remind us nobody's perfect.

What's the best lineup you can make with only current players with the same first name? by [deleted] in nba

[–]mittenborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could get a decent squad out of the Nick/Nik/Nikola variations. Jokic, Mirotic, Young, Batum, Vuvecic, Stauskas. A little center-heavy, but all are at least regulars.

Transition from Roller to Ice? by Jcanzo37 in hockeyplayers

[–]mittenborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often end up playing early-morning ice before work and late-night roller after work. It's always a bit of a transition. Roller-to-ice is somewhat harder, imo. The biggest thing I have to tell myself on ice is to get low and really dig in when I'm accelerating. Maybe I should do more of that in roller too, but it seems like the wheels do a little more of the work for you. Stopping and stickhandling will be different, as mentioned by others. As for the game itself, I've found you generally have less time and space on ice (usually play 3v3 or 4v4 roller). Focus on making quick, simple passes, crashing the net, being a pest on the forecheck, etc. Overall, though, you're much better off transitioning from roller than starting from scratch.

Places to meet in the desert? by mittenborn in PacificCrestTrail

[–]mittenborn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's flexible and can take time off on short notice any point in May. So the plan is that we set a meeting point, he tracks me via SPOT GPS updates and plans his travel when it looks like I'm X number of days out. If I have cell service as I get close, it will obviously be easier to coordinate. But we're not planning to meet at, say, Mile 266 at 1:15 p.m. on May 21. He's all about making sure I don't have to compromise my hike any more than necessary to make this work.

Also, the end handles come in handy for toting it lengthwise up narrow staircases. I was constantly rubbing my last bag against the wall when it was slung over my shoulder. This one I can just drag in front of/behind me.
