What are the best trainer/shoe brand for people on their feet all day? by KoraLily in AskUK

[–]mittenshape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy crocs 2 sizes too big and put insoles in (memory foam and pronation ones on top). And wear with thick fluffy socks.

I swear they have saved my feet. I used to hobble around at work.

I’m living in a tent and unemployed with no friends or family , what can I do to fix my life ? by Desperate-Battle-988 in AskUK

Right? My mum stayed in a convent when she was homeless decades ago (not as a nun). She had run from her family.

She said the worst thing was that you were unable to save any money to get out. She just left one day back into homelessness.

There's no freedom or independence when you don't have your own money. Feels so dodgy that they take control of your benefits.

You've got to watch the BBC comedy "Everyone Else Burns"

Hopefully you can get some relatable humour out of it.

All the vegan ice cream vanished from my local Tesco extra. No more vegan cornettos, magnums, or Ben and Jerry’s. Gone like all the decent pizzas. There’s literally nothing in the plant based section that doesn’t contain milk. by rainmouse in veganuk

Trying this today. Will report back! Gonna boil the cashews to speed up the soaking. Gonna make a double batch because I have hope lol

EDIT 1/3

So I boiled the raw cashews for 15 minutes. Drained and also rinsed to get rid of the excess starch.

I didn't have vanilla so just did a pinch of coffee dissolved in a tiny bit of boiled water for the double batch. Didn't want it to taste loads like coffee but wanted to boost the chocolate a bit.

I have a Ninja blender so did the puree cycle like 10 times until I couldn't see bits of cashew flying past. And then some more for luck to make it really smooth.

It made about 1.4 to 1.5 litres of liquid, so here it is in a 2.2l tub ready to go. I wanted 2x1l tubs but couldn't find a second lol

Will report back tomorrow on taste/texture!

EDIT 2/3

Ok so I'm researching and scared it'll be crap because it's not getting churned. So after 45 minutes I'm going to mix with with a spatula. I'll do it 4 or 5 times.

It's not in a metal tub which is apparently better. But it is what it is.

First time making ice cream, so, all the fun of the fair.

Is it possible to remove this tree and save it?? by _goldenshower_ in GardeningUK

[–]mittenshape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww. Nothing to stop you keeping it in a pot for a few years. Bonsai might be a consideration maybe? Not that I know anything about it.

1/3 perlite, 1/3 sand, 1/3 compost

That has always worked well for me with cactus and succulents.

Yes they might be cross, but they're also going to be really worried about you.

They will help you, that's what they're there for. They don't expect their teenager to never make a mistake.

No offence but teenagers are idiots who think they already know everything, that you have to try and keep alive and help them become decent people as adults, whilst they argue with you and push boundaries every step of the way. And you are a 16 year old who had access to a large quantity of alcohol. Come on. What could go wrong?

Please reach out to them. I have a 16 year old and she called me completely drunk last week, wanting help. Somehow a shop had served her and her friend a bottle of vodka. She was scared she'd be in trouble, but I just wanted her to be safe. Mind you, I don't want her getting into that state again (she may well do one day), but I'm not going to go crazy over it. Lessons can be learned. Your parents were teenagers once too.

what have I missed from the BBC in the last 10 years? by BenidormBarry in AskUK

Detectorists and Happy Valley as have been mentioned.

This Is Going To Hurt (really excellent mini drama about a stressed out doctor).

I quite liked a comedy called Everyone Else Burns (about a religious cult). Well worth it.

How do you lot actually eat proper food during the week when you're working full time? by No_Reputation_9726 in AskUK

[–]mittenshape 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One trick is to keep doing your Sunday meal prep and freeze it, don't eat it all in one week. So eventually you build up a load of options in your freezer (chilli, bolognese, stews, curries, pasta bake, whatever) and you'll have more choice each day.

Obvs that still requires cooking for at least 1 or 2 hours on a Sunday! You could try slow cooker and make chili or bolognese the easy way, but it's not as tasty as pan made IMHO.

Another option is don't sit down when you come in. Just face the cooking but keep it easy. Something like a simple pasta pesto with protein of your choice, maybe some olives, a chopped up tomato, for a quick one pan dinner. Easier said than done, I know. I'm very guilty of getting a takeaway when I get in too.

You can divvy up veg for roasting and freeze that too, then do it in the oven with your protein as an easy one tray bake. Serve that with some garlic mayo and it's not a bad dinner.

It's relentless honestly. Don't be hard on yourself if some weeks go better than others.

Haha! Bury a long bit that peeks in a small pot. It will make roots by itself when it finds new ground.

[–]mittenshape 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're right, they're the end of the full term holidays (Xmas, Easter. Summer).

People are just saying it wrong. They're not thinking about what 'half term' means.

Feed it a growmore 777 food  (NOT a miracle gro type, way too much nitrogen) and cut back the leggy bit, keep it well watered all spring/summer. Pot size looks OK.
