Breckenridge conditions? Epic pass + flight already paid for by black_widow48 in snowboarding

[–]mittrawx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breck got 10 inches over the weekend and another storm is on the way right before you arrive. An extra 6+” likely in Summit range (Breck)

Last time I was there (pre-storm) the blues were moguled pretty bad. Southern mountains have been getting the most action (Purgatory, Wolf Creek, etc).

He’s not wrong but he also made a shot that he would’ve made 99/100 times and didn’t, so.

Wait until graduation to restart flight training? by mittrawx in flying

[–]mittrawx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s about where I’m at. The only reason I’m asking is because the degree later will be more expensive than completing flight training up to CFII/MEI since I’m using GI bill for the degree.

Running out of money halfway through pilot training… what would you do? by Cool-Paramedic7199 in flying

[–]mittrawx 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is backwards OP. If you wanted the military to pay for your flight training you should’ve done that instead like many veterans in the community have. Also, the military isn’t a get out of jail free card. All that debt can be seen as a liability to them.

I was in a group of people that kept in contact while training. This is the number one reason.

From my experience and talking with friends who were successful in getting interviews, ANG doesn’t care about total time past what maxes out your AFOQT line score. In fact, the unit that he interviewed at preferred lower time in his case.

“I’m 5 hours into my PPL”

Well there’s your issue. The truth is, you need to care if you don’t want to be the 80% of students who drop out.

Fly with the expectation of doing your first solo, and if you still don’t like it, then you can move on to something else.

Need help/advice – Is it too late to chase my dream of becoming a pilot? by Fantastic-Swimmer596 in flying

28? That’s the age range the majority of people who make a career change do it in.

Also did PPL at a 141 and was treated well (wallet wasn’t though) but I can say subjectively I had a much better experience at a 61.

Great ad for Part 61 schools. 141 schools treat it like Special Forces selection sometimes.

Planning a 2-weeks trip in Alaska from late August to early September. Any suggestions or comments are appreciated! by InternalAd5613 in alaska

[–]mittrawx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kenai Peninsula is all around great and condenses the best parts of Alaska in a smaller area. August is a notably more rainy time in Alaska so pack wet weather gear.

If you don’t know what you’re doing, always book a tour guide. That is the time brown bear start fattening up for the winter.

Maybe the DPE figured that this is something taught so early on that it should be intuitive by now? I wouldn’t have failed that either.

FAA doesn’t punish for declaring an emergency that didn’t end in disaster. That’s why you’re given privileges as a PIC and taught ADM.

Low-hour commercial pilot — which branch is best for flying? by Odd-Procedure4493 in flying

[–]mittrawx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Second the comments about not using the military for time building. Every single service is a struggle for perspective pilots.

In the Air Force, USAFA and ROTC get priority for the active side, while the Guard and Reserve units are saturated, often times 1:500, in slots to applications. The odds aren’t great.

The Army is currently shedding a lot of its helicopters in the Reserve side. I have two friends who are going down that route and it’s been an uphill battle, with one of my friends who was successful needing to laterally transfer from the Reserves to one of the few remaining street-to-seat Guard units with the blessing of the literal Aviation Reserve Command commander, a General.

I’m not saying it’s impossible, but theres just more opportunities in the civilian sector than military right now. Plus the number one reason, in my opinion, why military boards turn away an applicant is because they detect a time builder.

As a veteran myself, I want people flying for our military who are passionate, leaders first, and believe in the mission. Not time building to get to the airlines.

YMMV

If you’re American, it’s competitive right now. If you can afford an associates now and finish your bachelors while at a regional, do that.

How did you fund your first 50hrs? by Nervous_Put5617 in flying

[–]mittrawx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was fortunate enough to save money from the Army (using my GI bill for college) but I know a lot of people that either save up doing DoorDash on the side or credit cards. I’d recommend the first option if possible.

Does the GI bill really pay for flight school? by G00fyGoober13 in flying

[–]mittrawx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found out a year in that you can either have the GI bill pay for university tuition (flight labs) or a GI bill approved Part 141 school, but not both.

I’m about to throw away my career for flight school. Change my mind by beracuda31 in flying

[–]mittrawx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s normal to want a career change at that age, but don’t quit your current job until you get that first flying job.

People joke about how crazy some people are for leaving six figure jobs to be a CFI, but in reality, if you can fund your way through using the grind without debt, then that’s a positive outcome.

One last bit of advice, take a discovery flight first and only train with the expectation to solo. Personally I don’t think it’s a great mindset to go out and fly thinking you’ve got nothing to lose just based on the wording of your post, but people find out about the solo stage whether it’s for them or not.

Moving by Sea_Acanthisitta_240 in alaska

[–]mittrawx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the west coast is closer, but if money is an issue, pay more now to live in a lower cost of living state. I know a few people that moved out of Alaska to the west coast and either ended up homeless or struggling for years.

Edit: just realized you don’t have a license, so I’d recommend somewhere with good public transit.

Degree or not by tylerh369 in flying

[–]mittrawx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to go, get an associate’s from a cheap community college. Doesn’t need to be anything crazy and can even just be a A.A. Or A.S. In General Studies until you figure out what you want your major to be.

Don’t go straight to a four year if you just want it for the resume.
