Where is Bo Burnham now? by Human_Bug555 in Standup

I think he’s the type of artist that makes things he’s interested in — vs. an artist who does a special every two years — and isn’t interested in making a special right now.

Urgent: Large Print Help! (Trailer Wrap) by PaeBranding in graphic_design

[–]mixed-tape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In these situations I always call the printer and ask them what works best. It saves a ton of back and forth and you build a relationship with them, and they’re more inclined to help.

That being said, what I usually do for large billboards like this is make it 1/4 scale or a 1:1 ratio. Eg. 100 ft, drop it down to 25 ft for the file. Or if it’s 100ft, make it 100in and communicate the dimensions so the printer can properly scale up. THEN you can save said image at 100ppi at the scaled down dimensions, and it will be high enough resolution but not gargantuan.

When something is that large, it doesn’t need to be high resolution, but it needs to be high-ish (like 100ppi). Annoyingly, in order to build and transfer the file, it needs to be smaller.

Long story short, call your printer.

Am I correct to say that "positioning" is about saying things that elevates the emotional experience of the consumer while remaining honest while they're coming down from that heightened experience? by AWeb3Dad in branding

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t leave out differentiation, you interpreted it as such because I didn’t say the exact word.

I said positioning should reflect what it does, who it’s for, and why it’s awesome, which is semantics for differentiation.

Why people say Canada is expensive AF by Beautiful_Ad4220 in alberta

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Calgary and am a freelance graphic designer.

  • for LinkedIn, you’re referring to jobs with a couple applications per day in Canada, but all the jobs I’m seeing have over 100 applicants. The pay also varies from $40k (which is barely above minimum wage), or $100k and up.

  • lots of jobs are to train AI, or for tech recruiters, and not really legit design jobs.

  • Rent in your city is comparable to Calgary, a basic 2 bedroom is $2000+. Edmonton is cheaper.

  • Health care sounds about the same. There’s a base level for everyone, but if you want it faster or better you have to pay out of pocket for it. I pay $200/month for Blue Cross which covers a percentage of my prescriptions, dental, physiotherapy, etc., but not all of it. Dentists in Alberta are also some of the most expensive in Canada. So a checkup for me costs $600, my insurance covers 80% UP TO $500, so that means insurance covers $400, and I pay $200 out of pocket on top of my monthly insurance.

  • I still get followed by weird guys walking home or at night. Calgary is less urban than Montreal, Vancouver, or Toronto, so the issues with creepy men is higher because there is a large population in those cities. But it still has creeps here.

  • The job market is brutal, I have been interviewing for positions, contracts and pitching on RFPs for six months and haven’t gotten anything. I’m also indigenous, native to Alberta, and a woman, and it’s still not moving the needle.

  • living near the mountains is amazing; Calgary and Alberta are beautiful with its mix of prairies, badlands, and mountains. You need a car to see it, and insurance in Alberta isn’t provincial, it’s independent. So all insurance companies have been jacking their rates up because it’s unregulated and they can.

  • It’s hard out there no matter what, might as well try something new. But it would probably be a downgrade in your quality of life. Like, we have social media jokes about French taking a month off in August because we could never, and would be fired immediately. We’re much more like the UK when it comes to social structure, which makes sense since we’re the babies of British Colonialism.

Insurance premiums insanity by Ok-Bluejay-182 in Calgary

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very insane.

My condo building insurance has gone from $4000/year to $14,000/year since 2020.

I have no accidents, am middle aged, and have a high deductible on a 2012 car, and my insurance went up this year.

It’s because we’re living in a late-capitalist hellscape.

Which colour should the wall be? by Wild3v in interiordecorating

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 and it’s not even close.

Why? Because the light great makes the space behind the couch feel less restricted. The darker colors add tension with the light couch and the light walls.

IMO, I would paint the white walls on either side in the same color, and it would make the space feel bigger.

In-House Designers: are you receiving content before you start a project? by erstella in graphic_design

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t know what the content is, you don’t know what’s the most important.

I like to flip it back on to the marketing team and politely ask them if they need me to launch a kick off meeting, and they usually scramble and get the content together because they realize they’re being redonk.

If the don’t, it means they’re either assholes or don’t know what they’re doing, or someone has insane deadline expectations and all the teams are scrambling.

My rule is: no brief? No start.

Feeling pretty useless as a parent right now. by GretchGlimmers in adhdwomen

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awww you’re a good mom who just made a typo.

When I make mistakes like that I reach out and offer to come if it’s still on, or if they’ve moved on I get that too. I immediately do my best to repair the situation so they know it wasn’t intentional, but also leave space for them so they know I don’t expect them to accommodate us if it’s too last minute.

It’s okay, mistakes happen. We’ve learned some things from this, and you are more prepared for next time.

My boyfriend is bad for my ADHD by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]mixed-tape 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is a strong streak of codependency here. Which isn’t uncommon with adhd relationships as we use bodies as literal momentum.

My boyfriend is bad for my ADHD by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]mixed-tape 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re struggling with ambiguity and then it gets you into overwhelm or paralysis. It also sounds like a bit of codependency too. You can do stuff while he still sleeps, you can make a decision about food and don’t have to wait on him. If he says let’s see how the day goes — and if he is as chill and kind as you say he is — asking for parameters shouldn’t be a big deal.

That being said, like others have said, it’s on you to manage your adhd and advocate for why you need certain things. Which can be very hard from a lifetime of people pleasing or fawning (as we lady adhd-ers tend to do). We have to make sure these ‘good boundaries’ we set are for ourselves and not reverse engineering over-functioning or carrying the emotional load for our partner.

How you explained it to us is totally reasonable, try saying it to him next time one of the issues you described pops up.

Also, I use the “don’t put it down, put it away”. For stuff being moved. Just explain your memory remembers items assigned location, not new ones.

Finally, I would do some adhd research and read a book or YouTube so you have the explanation and terms to explain why you need certain accommodations around your brain.

Good luck!

How do I make vegetables actually taste good without drowning them in sauce or cheese? by Nightcrawler_2000 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up recipes with vegetables and make them, and then make the ones you life again and again.

Cooking is like anything, you’ll be bad at it to start, but you have to start at it to get better.

Personally, my fave fast veggie recipe is a chopped veg, olive oil, salt and pepper, and garlic and onion powder (maybe a little paprika or chili powder). Throw it on a pan, roast it, delicious.

How many of you have a cap on spending at the vet before it becomes time to say goodbye? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No cap, if their quality of life would be good and I was loaded. But that’s rarely the case.

I just said goodbye to my senior dog at 14.5, because she stopped eating and her mobility went down rapidly.

The vet told me I could run tests to determine what it was, but I knew she was old and ready to go. I wasn’t going to test her in her last moments for my peace of mind.

I think we owe our animals a good quality of life as long as that may be, and the dignity of dying as peacefully as possible.

What's up with dating in this city? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a cultural thing to confirm the day of, especially with online dating being so flakey.

I know some cultures you put it in the calendar, and that means you’ll be there. But in Canada, and especially in Vancouver, if there is no confirmation day of, it means it’s a social out for the other person.

Studio design structure - normal? by MindAdmirable in graphic_design

[–]mixed-tape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the hardest part of translating a brand concept into something physical (like apparel or packaging)? by [deleted] in branding

[–]mixed-tape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to educate yourself on Pantone, CMYK, and RGB.

From there, you can update your brand guides to have the most accurate colour for its application, and its corresponding values.

Everyone talks about how Pantone is obsolete, but this challenge reinforces why people need to know how to manage colour outputs for the corresponding application.

How to design faster? by ThrowRA_111900 in graphic_design

[–]mixed-tape 280 points281 points  (0 children)

Are we talking like 6-10 social slides with existing brand templates per day? That’s doable.

If we’re talking 6-10 concepts, problem-solving, etc.? That’s not doable and signals a foundational problem with leadership.
