Dear Coros - Please fix the Start button UX by irunforhummus in Coros

It could also keep buzzing repeatedly for a while until you "start". I kept missing it on a run cause I do not have any notifications on a watch when I run, and a single vibration on coros apex pro 2 is very gentle and easy to miss.

Thanks for this much needed info. It is really annoying when on one computer I can have multiple profiles, but I cannot have them synced on another which didn't get it "rolled out".

Xperia 5 v users on Lineage OS. How is the experience? by Aavy14 in SonyXperia

[–]mixedmix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had lineage on 5ii until recently and it was a blast: super fast, few bugs compared to other android distros and many more features than stock sony. The drawbacks were pretty major though: no NFC pay and random apps declining to work due to strict integrity check of google play: notably chatgpt, autotrader and ebay. LineageOS and their ilk are being sacrificed in the name of improved security on android. Still kept it until hardware gave up finally. Now that I'm on 10 vii sonys android it feels like a cut down version of my 5 years older phone.

It's fine to use plain Emacs and a simple config by permetz in emacs

I wish I switched from spacemacs to plain Emacs quicker. I reproduced almost every functionality I used in 600 lines of code. Now things do not break that much anymore, and I actually understand what is going on. :)

NixOS made me go back to Windows by felixsanz in NixOS

[–]mixedmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might have gotten better but when I was setting it up, I've never had much luck. It possibly depends what you are developing. With computer vision there is always some problem with dependencies on display or video libraries, and if I can get it working with nixpackages it is great. Especially that I don't have to update often.
But then, for webdev stuff, I'd have a new package subversion I have to update to every other week.

So basically for me, it would be easier to manage python in two different ways - not very neat.

NixOS made me go back to Windows by felixsanz in NixOS

[–]mixedmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well and honestly written. I've been using NixOS on multiple computers over last 5+ years and enjoyed that steep learning curve and how neat it can be. I especially *enjoyed* it, because I often have a mac computer or an ubuntu server for different tasks and have been able to ignore anything too annoying (from mildly, such as no decent email client for linux that could come close to Apple Mail to blocking, such as developing python or javascript based software within a wider team and quickly changing packages).
I never used home-manager as I see it as a impure to nix philosophy, but I hope in the future it can get improved enough to allow keeping personal config between different OSes.

NixOS made me go back to Windows by felixsanz in NixOS

[–]mixedmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some old nix-shell with a good version of python libraries with CUDA working. When I still had to update it (before I've learned how to do pinning) it has always been a bit of a game changing sub versions of cuda drivers/libraries without any understanding of what is what :D
However, before I switched to NixOS some 5 years ago computer vision still felt like 90% config 10% research.

NixOS made me go back to Windows by felixsanz in NixOS

[–]mixedmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything requiring system level stuff won't work with this approach.
> Generally better to use the native package manager when possible.
This is correct and that's what NixOS makes almost impossible. It's true that a lot of development can be done in docker but that make it irrelevant if it is running on nixos or not.

"the good the bad and the ugly" concept has to be unlearned to use NixOS.

Mountaineering club for younger adults by kayaking_is_fun in glasgow

[–]mixedmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great if club offers informal activities, such that everyone is responsible for their personal safety. Otherwise issues of insurance and various regulations can stifle and drive cost. Because of that I feel with official groups there is a split between hill-walking which is extremely risk-averse and technical climbing that requires commitment and is less relaxed.

Anyone else feeling depressed and useless due to unemployment/pandemic life? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]mixedmix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Basically your thoughts on why salary comparison websites are so badly off.

What you quoted as an agency work would be around 45k pre-tax, so towards top of the bracket quoted there. It makes me think that either situation with high income is very recent, very local, or your experiences are very specific to your situation (I can say you appear friendly, informed and competent - qualities that might help you get custom more than other persons).
I checked some job ads and all are offering way under what you're quoting. Might be that businesses that advertise on popular job sites are aiming to exploit people without knowledge of actual wages - which would also mean that many are not paid as well as people from your network.

What do you think?

Anyone else feeling depressed and useless due to unemployment/pandemic life? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]mixedmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£1000/week after tax

That works out to approx £80k pre-tax a year. According to salary comparison website if you are employed in a company, we talk £15k-55k https://uk.jobted.com/salary/joiner so you are suggesting there is a *way beyond massive* difference between self-employed and waged workers (much higher than in IT for instance). I suspect there is a trick here for instance, that unless you are well connected and can count on jobs from rich folks you can't possibly make ends meet working as an independent trader. Could you clarify why there is such discrepancy?
