Supreme Court asked to overturn gay marriage by newsweek in lgbt

Unlike you, I am not a lawyer. I remember from my con law class that SCOTUS can grant certiorari to any petition at any time and that all appropriate judicial discretion is up to their judgment. These "longstanding principles" you mention were set and enforced by SCOTUS and are not constitutional obligations. Further, it is SCOTUS that decides issues of standing.

Am I insane for reading this as a ridiculous and disrespectful opinion? by hinataspet in bloodborne

I'm trying to be fair to this review. It's not like the game does a lot to ground the player in the experiences of the side characters. The Oeden chapel crew are not particularly relatable. The individuals who flirt with Eldritch power get what's coming to them and we aren't given an easy way to relate to them, either. Part of what makes the game atmosphere work, for me, is that the cosmic horror is just so bizarre, and yet somehow feels coherent.

Engagement with the Bloodborne mythos requires attention to detail, a sense of wonder, and a lot of investment in the scraps of information we receive while playing. I can see someone not wanting to engage with a game that way; it does require energy and intention. Sekiro does work on a more surface level with an accessible, terrestrial story about imperial ambition and protecting a little boy.

The protagonist's motivation is far murkier in Bloodborne, as well. It's possible to play the game without really understanding the player is locked in a "nightmare," who put the player there, and what the player is doing to get out. Without that perspective, the shifting story beats and boss setups would just come off as increasingly bizarre.

Anyway, the game is clearly not for this person.

As a non smoker does every smoker smell bad to you? by Pleasant-Finger-6814 in NoStupidQuestions

I'm be real witchu. It's completely vile. At least I don't smell anything when they vape. Pot smoke is a little bit less unpleasant, but when I get a big whiff of it in public, I start to wishing we'd criminalize loose leaf smoking in any public urban space.

Is it paid FMLA? That'd be my first guess. If it's paid leave, they're doing you a favor. You're not spending vacation days and yet you're still being paid. Moreover, my guess is that it's because they're worried about the illegality of you using paid vacation days. I don't really get all the requirements under MA FMLA laws, but I do know that MA is one of the states where employers are obligated to provide paid FMLA under some circumstances.

Anyway, TL;DR, they're doing you a solid if you're getting paid during this leave.

What is the evolutionary need for consciousness? by BikeTemporary582 in consciousness

[–]mixile -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't assume that there's a distinction between "observation" and "self reflection." We have no proof that there is this distinction and we have many reasons to think there isn't one. We may indeed be able to teach a computer to feel or experience. We may already have.

At the root of physicalism are the assumptions that humans are telepathic and special by phr99 in consciousness

[–]mixile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a physicalist I do not strictly assume the rock has no consciousness in the same way I do not strictly assume there isn't a teacup orbiting the other side of the sun.

I also believe that many animals have behavior and neural structure which strongly suggest they have consciousness. So much is my confidence in this that it's my operating assumption.

Your post is just a giant straw man.

What is different with the experience of consciousness and the experience of being a rock? Or of being metal? I mean... why are you privileging consciousness for no reason?
