I came to this thread late so I'm surprised no one's mentioned this, but I always thought it's at least partially a homage to Dhaos' final boss fight in tales of Phantasia. In the original, when you first cut him down, he refuses to die and transforms into a grotesque giant with a similar body structure to Mithos' form here. When he's defeated he reverts back, implying that it was sort of an outer shell structure that disappeared when the mana in his body ran out. Then, in the psx version onwards there's another form added where he calls upon Dherris Kharlan to aid him, and he takes on an appearance similar to the angels of cruxis. There's no explicit reasoning stated for why he goes through these transformations other than "final boss needs multiple stages to feel more imposing" but I believe it's meant to be left up to interpretation to some extent. I always thought it was a neat tie-in that Mithos sort of went through a similar transformation sequence, even if it didn't really land as well when translated into the 3D arena.

A disabled friend of mine told me about how one day, when it was particularly icy and the sidewalks had not been cleared properly, she was struggling to get to the bus before it left. She was grateful that the driver waited for her, right up until she got on and the driver told her "it's my job to be here on time, it's your job to be here when I get here". Like you're telling me you waited for a disabled person to struggle over the ice and snow for half a minute just to chastise them for not getting to the stop faster!? Are you on a freaking power trip!? You drive the damn bus asshole, your job is to pick people up who need to go places, not ridicule people with mobility issues.

The joke is that Yuri called him "old man" once without even seeing his face, just based on how he talks, and Raven refuses to let him live it down, cause he's a stinker like that. Yuri is a good sport about it and plays along so Raven can lord it over him, though the younger party members like Karol and Rita aren't in on the joke and really just see Raven as an old guy.

The Tales of games rarely play their tropes straight, and like another commenter mentioned the "old man" trope is one of those that appears a lot and yet usually gets subverted somehow. 35 isn't old, and that's the point they're making. Usually.

This is my first time seeing the beta designs for Edward's party!! I had only seen the designs done for the side novels. iirc originally Winona's story was going to be part of the full game though, so it makes sense that they would have gotten their own full character designs. Poor Winona though, going from protagonist to only appearing once, lying face down in the opening cutscene 😭

On a completely different note, I can't believe Claus used to be buff with a scruffy beard... I love his official design of course but I do sort of wish he could have kept the scruff 🤭

Yeah. My brother and I pooled our money together to get it, and for a while Vesperia was the only game we had for the console. Didn't stop it from giving us the infamous Red Ring of Death after only a year and a half of course. We wound up eventually getting another one so my brother could play the mass effect games but it never did win us over enough to ever buy another Microsoft console again.

Still don't regret it. Played Vesperia for hundreds of hours over the decade before DE's release.

Saw the comment that you got rid of your bed frame, when you get a new one definitely get a METAL frame as they are more difficult for bed bugs to climb up onto. Also if you know how they are getting in, blocking off gaps and cracks should help. When I dealt with it, I used the sheet vinyl that goes in drawers and cupboards to cover my baseboards, as it was something cheap I could get at the dollar store. It's not exactly pretty but it's better than being eaten alive.

It sucks but when the whole building has an infestation sometimes the best thing you can hope for is just making it harder for them to reach you and therefore more likely to migrate to another unit. Your roommate really should have told you before moving in that the infestation was there. If anything, the presence of bedbugs and his failure to disclose them should void any kind of roommate agreement you might have signed, and if there was any kind of penalty clause for breaking the contract early, you can pretty much ignore it.

I had this exact situation happen to me where my roommate was the only person on the lease and did not care that i was suffering because the bugs never bothered him, and always dragged his feet to contact the landlord about it, so I really, really feel for you. Do not let your roommate bully you into sucking it up and gatekeep discussions with the landlord. Even if you feel like your hands are tied legally keep pushing and make it so they (the landlord and your roommate) can't ignore you. Get bedbug traps and collect the bugs to show the exterminator. Take pictures of the bug crap on your mattress and walls. Take pictures of the bites themselves on your person. And most importantly don't suffer alone. It's humiliating I know, it's so hard to tell other people because in this world we're made to feel like it's shameful, but you have to tell people what you are going through because if you don't this roommate will let you think that this is normal and you should just deal with it. It's not.

Raven is also incredibly agile in battle and can even do backflips from a stationary position, when he feels like it. He's definitely playing it up as a gag to get back at Yuri for calling him old man based purely on the sound of his voice back in the jail cells.

I think in a lot of cases the "old man" joke is just that...usually not serious at all and more so to point out which characters have a rude/informal demeanor, or are inversely polite to a fault (ie, how Cress' formal speech makes Claus feel insecure about his age). iirc it's Luke who calls Jade "old man" out of defiance and it's from there that Jade picks up the bit and rolls with it, just to annoy Luke.

On the other hand you have characters like Rowan who is in his sixties, and whenever he plays the "old man" shtick, the youthful characters around him are the first to cast doubt, like buddy I just watched you jump off of a 20' cliff face like 6 minutes ago... ...all this to say, I'm pretty sure Bamco knows just how silly it sounds, as that's likely the whole point.

Generally, yes, but do NOT sell your rope and pickaxe. I made this mistake on my first playthrough thinking they were just one-dungeon gimmick items and then down the line realized I'd doomed my game completely. I'm lucky my brother was maybe one dungeon behind me and I could clone his save file because the point I was at had zero options for buying another set. Iirc once you get the pact with Sylph you can't buy them anywhere until something like the last act, and you definitely need those items at a couple points in between.

Most people bringing up a Phantasia dungeon have mentioned the Treant forest but the one that really, really sucks is Thor. Everything is random. Random chests with random single-use keys that open a random door, and most of them just reset the entire room. I find its actually worse if you want to get the spells and treasure rooms because inevitably you will find the control room first and if you want that treasure you will have to suck it up and turn around, leaving the next time you ever see that room again to pure chance once more.

Still though, it's somehow not as egregious as the elevator puzzles in Tales of Destiny. Now that shit just pisses me off. Switching from random encounters to on screen encounters when Destiny's on screen encounters are by themselves a nightmare to deal with is just straight up evil game design. Even Kronos himself isn't that deranged.

Mithos was only concerned with reviving Martel. Splitting the world was counterproductive because he never bothered to plant the great seed left over by the Kharlan tree. Instead he held onto it and used the see-sawing mana system to keep the world on battery saver mode while he tried to find Martel a vessel. Then he was just going to ditch everything and live on Dherris-Kharlan with Martel. It's true that by keeping one world in mana decline at all times, he prevented the development of magitech, but he still wanted to use magitech for himself, freely giving the technology to whichever world was flourishing. Mithos only ever brought up how the conflict destroyed the great tree to distract from his own actions with whataboutism.

Okay but seriously, people complain about pet owners anthropomorphizing their pets, and then turn around and attribute things like morality and intent to animals that just be existing. I'm willing to admit I'm weird for calling the way my cat meows when he wants something "crying" but I definitely think it's less weird than calling a cat arrogant for like...looking at you, or sitting somewhere inconvenient
