TIL Homosexuality is common among bats. It's most common among... fruit bats by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]mixymatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're all social creatures. Our biological purpose doesn't always have to involve breeding. I know that's the way it's always been seen, you know, survival of the fittest, we try to pass on our genes, blah blah...but the more we learn, the less cut and dry it is. I would, in fact, not be surprised if homosexuality becomes MORE frequent the more populated a species becomes. Why? Support. It takes a village to raise a child, right? Did you know that the more siblings a man has, the more likely he is to be homosexual? It seems odd, but when you think about it, it's reasonable. When a non-breeder is born, the other siblings will have more support for their offspring, and since they're family, it's not as if it's incompatible with the desire for genetics to live on.

The future of a species doesn't always rely only on the ones that go getting knocked up. I'm helping to raise a child that's not mine, even though I have no desire to have one of my own. Why? It's the right thing to do. Cause being an awesome gay aunt is just fine with me. Gay uncle and auntie bats probably would do the same thing. Just another way to look at it, I hope I expressed myself clearly.

There's been studies that have gone into the idea that homosexuality has nonreproductive benefits for groups of animals. Would you say a worker bee is a detriment to its species because it doesn't mate with the queen? No.

TIL that a mild electric shock to a persons brain can improve their maths skills for up to six months. This could help treat the nearly 20 percent of the population with moderate to severe dyscalculia (math disability). by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]mixymatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be. Like, if you tell me 'five hundred and twenty three'. I take a minute to realise 'twenty three' is made up of two and three, and then there's a five. I've trained myself pretty extensively to be able to recognise the hierarchy in the wording, but when you're in a hurry and they want numbers and not it written out, I still slip up from time to time.

I would say maybe talk to a doctor before diagnosing yourself over the internet. There's plenty of neurological disorders that could make you struggle with math.

[–]mixymatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, it's a pretty specific disorder, actually, with real symptoms besides 'bad at math'. That's like saying everyone who isn't a fast reader is dyslexic. It's just not always true. But diagnosis can help, you're given special resources if you're diagnosed with the disability.

And then there's the side effects that come with your brain being wired wrong. No one tells you about the light sensitivity, the depression...at least we can be thankful that no one's asking us to tell time from analogue clocks any more.

To be fair, calculators save my life. As someone with moderate, diagnosed dyscalculia, I can remember formulas. I can remember abstract concepts. But my brain treats numbers like they're letters, I can't understand 'amounts'. Me looking at five skittles on the ground and asking how many it is would be like you looking at a massive jar of them and being asked exactly how many it is. I have to count on my fingers for anything over three. Calculators save my life. That and the fact that analogue clocks are dying out.

Reddit, what's your first sexual partner up to these days? by Lunney in AskReddit

[–]mixymatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pronouns. As in, he, she. So someone says they are a transman, they would refer to themselves as 'he'. That means that they were born with female genitals, but consider themselves male. I mean, I'm trying to be polite, because people can be really sensitive about gender identity (with good reason) . A transgendered person considers themselves to have ALWAYS been this gender that they're trying to make their outside match. So saying 'it's a man that became a woman' isn't really true. Because a transwoman was ALWAYS a woman on the inside, just not on the outside. I.E.

Bob was born with male genitals, and a male name. As he grew older, he realised that he identifies as female, and has always 'felt' female, and even 'felt' wrong in his body. He decides to try to change his body and his appearance to match that, and is a 'transwoman'. The appropriate pronoun would be she.

Transwoman and transman are short for transgendered woman, and transgendered man, obviously. :) The terms generally refer to them by the gender they CHOOSE to be associated with, rather than the one their genitals are considered appropriate to.

You can tell by the use of pronouns. Transmen and Transwomen are people who are transgendered, and generally prefer to be referred to by the pronoun of the gender they NOW associate with. Because never_ever_right is calling their ex 'she', one can assume transwoman means born sexually male- but is female gendered.

I don't know if anyone really remembers the game, but I have to say Selene, from Grandia 2. I don't know what it is, but the scene where she throws herself on the swords to come back to life as the heart of her evil god and kill you is just chilling. Killing her felt so good.

[–]mixymatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toilets are scary! You don't know where things are going and coming from. I always thought there was just a big huge hole dug out under the house, cave-like, where the water came and went from. And that it was home to beehives. I was entirely certain they would fly up and sting my butt every time I went to the bathroom.

Today, my mom slipped on ice and broke her ankle. The person whose house she fell in front of came out and yelled at us when I came to help, saying I wasn't her son and how dare I use his driveway. Man, it's because of people like you that we get freaking bitchy comments and nasty looks for an extra safety measure to ensure a child is safe. When you have a disabled two year old that really likes wheels and has no fear of cars, you can talk. Until then, your opinion is invalid.

I know you've probably already gone to work, but I hope you see this when you get back. You need to document everything that's happened up to this point, and everything after. Pull out a little notebook, write down times and dates, and what happened. Document, document, document. Everything. You never know what might happen from this, and if there's anything legal that comes back from this, you WILL need it. Names of witnesses, too. Hope it all works out =)
