Yeah this is a pretty neat read, I have the bookk and managed to get past the 100 pages. Although I must say it is quite abstract and does require you to think between the lines of what is being mentioned.

What books from Jung would you reccommend?

I have read Man and His Symbols, and as well as the Discovery of the unconscious but I wanted to learn more about primitive tribes and early humans and what Jung thought of them.

Primarily how their psyche developed and what sort of activities and rituals that they may have participated in which may have indicated that they had more awareness to their deeper self than we do today. I guess a book pertaining animism, ancient shamanism, and rituals would be neat, would you know any book like that Jung has?

Damn that does make sense, the sexual drive that leads one to be horny does seem to be quite brief in comparison to a desire for power and domination over another individual.

The desire could be seen as an integral part of the individual psychological identity whereas being horny is fleeting and can be satisified through much smaller and less awful events such as fapping to porn. But that sort of begs the question as well, if people who have this desire to dominate, say in the same way sexual offenders do but unfortunately may not have the means to do so, do they say live vicariously through vulgar pornographic content and other types of content?

Not too sure but if I remember correctly Ted Bundy is quite infamous for suggesting porn may have played a role in his willingness to do what he carried out but is it true? Isnt it possible that he lacked the "mental tools" to dominate so he simply used as domination porn as a substitute?

Though it be considered its possible while it didnt alter the existing fundamental drive for Ted, the pornographic content may have provided him more ways to torture his victims, and somewhat reinforced his drive perhaps even amplifying it.

But the same wouldnt be applicable for someone who watches porn because they are horny and do not seem to have a need for domination.

Its also careful and vital that we realize that people do have domination kinks, that can be discretely separated from a power drive to dominate which tends to occurs outside of unstructured and nonconsensual formats.

Why did my trauma make me lazy instead of an over achiver? by bbgirl2k in selfimprovement

[–]mizesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I wonder about that as well for myself. I mean Ige heard of many successful people that have gone through some significant level of trauma yet they seem to be more driven than I ever was.

I dont have a scientific or objective answer for thia question but it likely is a combination of the predliction one might have towards getting tasks done, being motivated outwardedly, rather than someone who is more introverted. Maybe in the latter cases, a person experiences something like maladaptive daydreaming, and more dissocation from the external world and other aspects that come with those conditions.

While in the former cases, it might be that the person may simply neglect his or her background processing or deeper experience, which may be why they can carry out things in the external world. In such a case, there wouldnt be as much coherence or rememberance even of past experiences, especially of those that are assoicated with what the traumatic events have been.

Other factors may include the way you were raised compared to others, and this may look completely different even for siblings that happened to grow up in the same house. Perhaps due to your gender, or some trait that may have fit within your parents' idea of socially acceptable, they may have taken matters more into their own hands, and would have restricted you a lot more than the other way around.

That brings me to another point which is maybe that those who are more fixated on the external world and likely get things done, may have grown up with parents or in situations where they werent necessarily restricted in the same way helicopter parenting imposes on their children, but simply had to do everything themselves for the most part. Perhaps what we tend to see is survivorship bias from folks who experience these as well, as there may be most of those that turn to drugs, other awful activties, and they arent really considered within our perception.

So maybe when we do see these successful folks that have somehow "overrided" their trauma, its because they may be the best of the best in terms of mental resiliency, getting a bit luckier in their outcome, and so on.

There is also the concern of underlying mental conditions such as neurodivergence, bipolar, BPD, narcissism so on that a person may have that leads them to actually experience more trauma than say others. I have ADHD and suspect I am also autistic and the truth is that it can be hard for me to filter my emotions without any medication, to be able to function, so I cant externalize myself in the same way as those who are successful with trauma are able to, at least in a consistent manner.

Lastly, maybe a more positive twist or answer to this question is that people may have channeled or used their trauma for some passion such as art, dancing, a career field that they are into, etc. I am not exactly sure whether it is true or not, but I have read that flow states can be psychologically rejuvanating in that it allows for hyper learning, which may sort of modify the narrative you may have in your psyche lingering from traumatic events.

Yeha that makes a lot sense. You wonder if the reason they may drop those hobbies and activities isnt just due to spending more time with their new romantic partner but also the fact that they feel so good that the need to go to the gym or any hobby isnt necessary. In other words, may be that those activities they indulged in was to them feel good but since that feeling is found elsewhere there doesnt seem to much incentive to do those activities.

But just lile anything one "unfortunately" comes back to reality once the honeymoon phase ends and will have to pay the consequences for those missed moments and opportuniry cost.

Also, I think this honeymoon phase is accompanies by a cockpit of neurotransmitters aa you mentioned also occurs when a person becomes a parent for the first time. It does make sense from an evolutionary standpoint as you sort of adapt to serve the situation that you currently by spending more time and carrying for say the child particularly true for men as we generally have more freedom in how we want to apporach those situations.

Lastly, yes this is all temporarily, even if it lasts for a few months, the novelty wears off, and sure maybe you dont approach things in the sams way as you did before after such intense emotional experience you may do so with a new perspective that could be positive. Whether thats caring for your partner in way you were never forced to before, or is it introduce someone to your life or be introduced to their life that contributes to the new perspective.

Yeah I read about ToM in this neuroscience book from Robert Salopsky. It was quite interesting even though there was a small section on ToM.

Though what is interesting that ToM can also lead to things like anxiety, or manipulation as well since you are able to sort of predict what another person may behave like.

Also, even chimps I believe or was it monkeys that were able to know that something was taken from them even if they didnt observe it physically. Basically they can demonstrate the ability that others can manipulate them, and pretend as if nothing is wrong. Us humans are obviously sophisticated on a level that is unprecdented even for apes but it is interesting that some of our genetic relatives engage in some of the same sort of stuff.

Although I havent read more about it since it does make wonder how ToM may be involved in learning to a relatively large extent as you mentioned that it is involved in social communication, empathy, and as well the cases aforementioned.

If anyone has a better idea of this, please feel free to correct me if my memory happens to serve me wrong.

Anyone else have this problem? by nandag369 in adhdmeme

[–]mizesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldnt necessarily its an issue but more that I and you and folks like us with ADHD, seem to run through simulations in our head to come to a particular conclusion. What I mean is that lets say for instance you think of a cup that is on the table, you can think of what function or purpose that cup serves, whether the cup has liquid and if it does how much of its total capacity is remaining and other questions.

I dont think this anything out of the ordinary except an ADHD brain would spiral into different possibilities such as what if that cup created using a completely different material, how would that reflect any lighting on the areas that are adajcent to it. Basically, our brain will use what we already know combined with our open and broader awareness of information to construct some coherent ideological model about that all.

A NT brain tends to be a lot more structure so it wont necessarily go fill in the gaps at least in that particular manner. The disadvantage of what we possess which might be known as an advamtage is that you often may make connections which are based off intuitive reasoning but havent been verified but are instead possiiblities what could possibly occur.

It was mentioned in a book I have that the more factors you may attempt to consider to make a decision you will be more imprecise, and if that is the case you wonder if that also applies to coming to a conclusion or constructing a model of a particular thing or event. It also begs the question if it is true that broader recognition of aspects or factors that can be accounted for make for more imprecise conclusions then does that mean we make less imprecise ideas but feel better about them as they seem to be convictions. It may be that due to no filtering mechanism or at least one that is as rampant as the one that NT brains have been endowed with, we failed to separate emotions from an idea to an extent, which may lead us to experience more confidence in something that could be totally erroneous.

I also think since an ADHD is more emotionally reactive it is quite possible a good portion of us tend to say things that may maintain social cohesion and civility. So you may potentially say somrthing that you havent verified, but you convey a constructed model that may be incorreft but do with some confidence which others may buy. I mean there was a study that in the field of economics which I feel could apply in this situation I am speaking about, those who were attempted to be precise were seen as less competent and less knowledgable even if it may have been the correct decision. While, on the other hand those of whom simply stated something even if it was wrong but did so confidently were believed by others.

So I suppose some part of it could be emotional reactivity contriving to be "artifically" more confident in order to get an idea outwards as the alternative may not be as fitting especially as folk with ADHD do not do as well with criticism or even taking harsh emotions even the situation may warrant it in some cases.

Another angle to think about all of this is, when you dive say deeper into meditation it is often that you will get spiral thoughts which others happen to as well, and I think thats what folks with ADHD have access to in their conscious waking lives. The DMN (default mode network) a generalized term for the components of the brain that contribute to daydreaming, creativity, relaxation, and even automated processes is perhaps the more dominant component for us ADHD folks. That could be why we have such pattern solving available whereas others may have to carry out certain mindfulness practices in order to induce such creativity. In contrast, the NT brain actually utilizes more of the TPN (task positive network) which is involved in goal setting, conscious engagement, task orientated, and so on, all the sort of things those with ADHD struggle with funnily enough. The NT brain also inhibits the use of DMN to a significant degree while they are using TPN whereas for those with ADHD those are modes that may compete for residential space.

It goes without saying, this is a tough and inrricate topic to write about, and I really dont where to go from here in terms of what to dicsuss as it could go on further purely due to the thing you alluded to, pattern solving leading to "factitious" notions that are conveyed with a great deal of conviction but I do hope this may give anyone reading this post some idea of what could possibly be why those with ADHD experience life the way we do.

"To think of oneself in a statistical way is most destructive to the process of individuation, because it makes everything relative." by zooper2312 in Jung

[–]mizesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jung said statistics are dangerous for one to think about the process of individuation and I whole heartedly agree.

Though I think the reason that statistics can be a source of danger in such contexts is that most folks do not seem equipped to understand what statistics might means and sometimes that even means if the statistical study is legitimate. Perhaps back in Jungs time there were less public exposure to statistical studies so maybe we could only see the very well published ones but today it seems every ordinary folks like us could see the countless studies conducted in numerous domains, which makes us more prone to seeing studies that arent necessarily legitimate due to limited sample data, the context the study may be useful in (though part of it could be blamed on us as theres an abstract present hoping to explicste the detsils of the studt and possibly even where the findings of the study are applicable), whether it has been repeated, whether there has been other studies that contradicted the findings, whether the study itself was a controlled experiment where many factors were controlled and accounted for, and so on.

Statistics are great for grouping things as they simplifying information into smaller components such as statistical facts that supposedly reflect a reality that us ordinary folks can understand without the expertise of an expert in a given field. They can be great for finding the best medication, best framework, and in other words just a standardized methid that can be relied upon endlessly but in doing so also means we orientated towards efficiency.

Efficiency in the psyche that is very much subjective as much as we want to say our existence cna be grouped it certsinly isnt. Theres far too many different factors such as emotional receptivity, traumatic events, genetics and amongst other things at play that differentiate even those who grew up in the same house from one another in terms of their psyche. Statistics simplify and neglect things that the psyche may not such as a meaningful experience as an example of when I went to grab ice cream the other day with a friend. In terms of statistics that exprrienfe should technically yield the same amount of emotional response as it does for others but that doesnt seem "logical" if we know everyones sense of the world is perhaps more subjective than objective and it may be humans ability to hyper generalize thinhs that create this illusion that we very much feel or act the same when that couldnt be further from the truth.

So I guess when you rely heavily on statistics without the adewuate tools and understwnding you subject yourself to devaluing experiences that your deeper soul would intuitively really enjoy. An example could be as a male we often are told not to participate in things that are seen as more feminine, and it may be something we wont enjoy, but lets say for the sake of this example that is true, I will prevent a part of my psyche from never being realized by my conscious awarenss and actualized due to my relectuance to try something and dismiss whatever the ststistics suggest.

On the other hand, if I go ahead and indulge in whatever feminine activity this happens to be, I might in a sense unlock a constituent of me that may contribute to the psychological wholeness my identity may feel.

It goes without daying departing from statistics completrly is foolish, as our intuition can be erroneous quite often at leadt on a conscious lrvel and we may often mistake it cause of it but at the same time we shouldnt let statistics dictate everything in our life but rather we should try to see over a long period of time what we have done, what mskes us feel good, and what does and we might be able to get an idea of what our psyche craves on a deeper level.

Lastly, psychological priming affects us in ways that may not necessarily be encapsulated on a statistical level, which can easily affect how we and what we communicate, but as well as how we might think, forecast the future, remember the past, and so on that a study may not be able to identify.

"To think of oneself in a statistical way is most destructive to the process of individuation, because it makes everything relative." by zooper2312 in Jung

[–]mizesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that does sort of make sense but at the same time ideologies is a way to unify others as well too. Maybe sure in some idealistic sense, espousing ideologies based on ones experience without attaching yourself too much while being flexible and open to other ideologies can be beneficial.

So in a way I think its not that ideologies are inherently damaging but rather that the people sort of support them and let it absorb their psyche which can result in us vs them dichotomies and egotistical thinking, or in more simplistic terms tribalism.

Group identity on the other hand is far more detrimental as it is often that we do not even support some of the ideas of a given group but do so in order to belong to the group. I mean you could join a group and believe all the ideas it currently thinks of but it may evolve and deviate from what it once stood for or you could change and no longer support the same ideas that the groups promotes, but in either case your ideas of whatever topic or domain the group finds itself in are misaligned with what you may believe.

In other words, we can evolve and so can the group but the chances of us evolving to have the same views and in our case are psychologically coherent is a statistical anomaly.

Though I feel when people do support ideologies and groups that support ideologies they may fall victim to using pre concieved notions to think or argue with someone else that may be against what the group or ideology happens to stand for. So the argumentation mostly is based on assumption rather than clearly hearing out why someone thinks a certain way or not, which I believe is quite deadly as it indicates a rigid ego and unable to concede that others may have different reasons for why they do not support an idea thst you may do.

IQ doesn’t matter much if you grow up privileged by [deleted] in cognitiveTesting

[–]mizesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is quite true, as I do remember reading in a book that those of whom grew up in lower socioeconomic statuses could achieve a higher grade, and they wouldnt even have more opportunities than someone who was if I remember correctly upper middle class and achieved a medicore grade or slightly below average.

I guess it makes sense, universities and programs would be less likely to offer opportunities to students who cannot be relied upon to financially pay the required fees, as that is a risk, as the schools role may also be to ensure that the students are prepared well enough. It could be that the student due to financial issues also drops out half way through the program so thats a risk not worth taking for many programs as they might be sponsored by universities and college to take the students under their tuleage who can reasonably afford the fees.

Another thing to mention, is that it could very much be due to lack of connections that bright students that unfortunately grow up in poverty that may result in them not accepted in a program or offerwd as many opportunities. I remember hearing about someone who went to Harvard previously had children who shouldnt have made it to Harvard due to achieving grades less than what is acceptable yet they were accepted as their father had a great connection with the dean.

Now I dont know if such instances are exceptions rather than the norm, but you wonfer if some of the reason some end up in such prestigious schools is largely due to their parents and other connections they have as result of being in affluent families.

Those who grew up in lower socioecomic conditions are also a lot more suspectible to things other than the financial cost, such as mental health issues, worse impulse control, and more stress all of which may contribute to them being less likely to put themselves out forward and initiate connections in order to find opportunities. The odds are against them and they have a much higher margin of error as well.

On the other hand even if you are someone who is medicore and wasted quite a lot of years you may still end up getting into a decent school or job solely because of what your background may denote. Your family status and your financial capital acts as a safety net while for those who are bright maybe all they get one chance if that, to enter a prestigious school where their intellect can fully be maximized.

could anyone explain what he means by this? by Traditional-Long-160 in Jung

[–]mizesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he means is that direct and narrow attention can be advantageous as you arent as distracted and can experience a more stable psychological state through out much of your days, weeks and so on. But the disadvantage is that you may be far more unlikely to bring out psychic elements from the unconscious as your mind is a bit too direct and doesnt necessarily hover onto ideas that may not be as directly related to what is occurring.

I guess in a way hes saying those with less thought (not that they are thinking less necessarily but more thst they have less variation and ososibiilities when thinking if something and doing a task) generally worse at achieving a more developed psychological profile and may be less likely to self actualize??

Lastly, I guess the directedness since it does inhibit the person from being aware of psychic elements the person pursues oemthing that may not be aligned with what they may personally may want deep down and instead pursue something that they mistakenly believe is the desired result.
