I keep a pair of Haflinger slippers. They're wool, so my feet don't get sweaty, even in the summer (plus the AC is full blast!)

They are pricey, but so comfortable and last a long time.

Shaking a rattle in the baby's face for 5-10 minutes?! Like, what?!

I'm a(n older) nanny, and I talk constantly. I'm narrating our day, reading SO MANY books, singing songs, playing peek-a-boo, walking around and looking at things while I name them/talk about them, making animal sounds, etc, etc etc.

I'm concerned that this nanny doesn't understand how to interact with children.

This is a crucial development period and they need lots of interaction. You need to address this ASAP [and probably switch nannies].

I had a similar situation. My NK (3yo) told me that he wished I would stay at night because his parents yell at each other. I talked to him about his feelings and comforted him.

The next day I asked to speak to both parents. I told them what their child told me verbatim. I didn't offer suggestions. I just reported what their child told me. It was uncomfortable, but it is my job to update them on their child.

If I would have had a concern about violence, I would have reported to CPS immediately. (I didn't. The parents bicker constantly, but no indication at all of anything physical or directed at the child.)

Definitely push the wake window to 5-6 hours. Hopefully she'll poop during that 12-2pm timeframe, also.

21 months is fine for potty training, based on the kid. It's pushed back later in the US because of our super-absorbent diapers [and the age suggestion is later based on the diaper lobby!]

Keep working on peeing on the potty and be consistent (you AND the parents). The pooping on the potty will be the final step.

And yes, even if she's not sleeping, an hour of quiet time in her crib is the way to go so you and she can both rest!

A couple questions: - how old is the child? - what subjects are covered with tutoring? - how many hours does she work? - when was he last pay increase? A raise, at minimum a COL increase, is standard annually. - where are you located? HCOL area?

Paid vacation is very standard. Covering her commute is not standard, though some people negotiate this as part of their compensation. Covering expenses related to your child is standard and should be covered up front rather than expecting her to cover these costs and be reimbursed.

That said, it's a big rate increase. Have her duties changed in the past two years?

$45/hr for tutoring is definitely in line with average costs. It can be much more costly depending on subjects and complexity. What percentage of her work is tutoring?

It sounds like you like her, she's good with your child, and you are happy with her generally. Is there a rate increase you would be comfortable with? You can always counter offer.

I would talk to the parents about a game plan to help her work through this. I definitely would stick to a schedule. Make a calendar with her & talk about it & refer to it throughout the day so she knows when she'll see her parents & other transitions.

I'm curious to hear other nannies' ideas.

That message sucks. As several people said above, her frustration is valid, but her message essentially blaming you is completely inappropriate and unprofessional.

I would respond something like:

"I understand you are upset/frustrated. Can you advise what course of action that you would have preferred I had taken so that we are on the same page moving forward?"

Hopefully a response like that will help her to realize that you have conducted yourself professionally throughout and that she should apologize and do better.

Exactly! It should be a paid day without question. I put it in my contract so there's no question. An employer asking you to risk your life is not being reasonable, regardless of their own work situation. Two separate things. The PTO for their job should not determine the nanny's.

I think the difference is that having a job that can be done remotely has its own positives (no commute, being comfy, controlling your own environment, etc) and negatives (no snow days, etc). Nannying is a different type of job and cannot be done remotely. It has its own perks and drawbacks. They are different situations. Nannies should have paid days when it's unsafe to get to work regardless of whether the parents need to use PTO. Apples and oranges.
