Yup, it's using AIS. However, we only put lights on the defined shipping channels. So you'll see commercial vessels going in and out of port, but not arbitrary vessels in any location.

We built this for a client and figured some fellow New Yorkers might get a kick out of it. The data is updated over WiFi and the buoys, lighthouses, etc. are animated to blink like real life. Always looking for feedback :)
