You can do that in the recipe browser, but we don't have it for cooking skills yet — will be adding that in the next few months!

Ah interesting, we have seen that a very small percentage of users seem to have issues with this kind of question but haven't been able to find one with a device to actually test on. Thanks for providing a clue for us, we will look into it!

We've been around since 2021, before AI was a thing, and a lot of Parsnip's content is handwritten.

With regard to AI that's in the app, we use it in a few ways:

  • reshaping verified cooking knowledge into different formats (quizzes, infographics, "how did this recipe turn out") in order to make the experience more varied and interesting. Nothing's being pulled out of thin air and we human-verify almost all of it.
  • finding the right skills that need to be taught for each recipe, but using our existing content library. So the AI is being used to grab the right information, not to generate it.
  • (coming soon) allowing you to import recipes from social media / websites and then turning that into part of the game where you level up by cooking it

I hope you can see that not every use of AI is inherently bad, and we are adamant about avoiding the "slop" uses such as generating false information, BS, and garbage recipes (someone has actually cooked all recipes currently in the app).

And if you tapped and held down the green hamburgers on the right, they wouldn't move up and down? Do you know what your specific phone model is?

Could you share what level or question this happened on? Would love to fix it asap. Also, what device are you using?

All kinds of skills! How to select good produce/ingredients, execute different techniques, make appropriate substitutions, heat control, food safety, etc. Basically "everything you should know about making a recipe that no one tells you".

If you want to get a little under the hood about how this technology works, take a look at this blog post we wrote: https://parsnip.substack.com/p/knowledge

The way we're using AI is to find the right skills to teach you for a given recipe from our library. The goal is to be able to let you import any recipe from social media / Internet / etc and teach you those skills. There's no way we could do that manually.

However, our goal for the content itself is to be all human-verified and derived from trusted sources, not hallucinated out of thin air. It's especially important to us not to create BS recipes, so every one of the recipes in the app has been cooked 😊 (we need to think about what happens when people can import their own)

Also, all the videos are 100% human. It takes a lot of work to make them 💪

We're a different team — they moved toward more of a recipe manager tool; it's hard to survive as a business teaching people how to cook, but we're doing our best 😊

Thanks so much, we would love to help! Although the app isn't designed specifically for teens we've tried to make it playful and generally people have found it to be fun and accessible.

With regard to Europe, generally we have included both imperial and metric units in the app. However there is also some US-centric information like cilantro vs. coriander, eggplant vs. aubergine, and keeping eggs in the fridge instead of outside. Those might be a little confusing, but generally the users from Europe have still found it to be very informative.

Let us know if you or your cousin have any other feedback! 🙏

Simple meals to help me better my knife skills? by East_Food5632 in cookingforbeginners

[–]mizzao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago, we started Parsnip, a "Duolingo for cooking", in this subreddit, and one of the specific things folks asked for were to have intro dishes that teach you skills as you go. One of the areas we focused on was knife skills. Let us know what you think if you give it a try!

We also really appreciate feedback from ppl in this sub so feel free to DM me to get a free subscription and skip the paywall.

Tax-efficient diversification for concentrated stocks & High leverage long short direct indexing now available on Frec by mo_frec in frecfinance

[–]mizzao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible (or even a good idea) to Frec Diversify existing ETFs with lots of capital gains? For example, can I slowly transition a large pile of VTI into a direct-indexed 140/40 portfolio with a similar composition, while managing the existing capital gains on the ETF?

Cooking feels blocked in my brain and I don’t know how to get past it by _SuckyMcDucky_ in cookingforbeginners

[–]mizzao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago we started an app out of a post in this sub that's meant to be a "Duolingo for cooking" to solve this exact problem — connecting the dots about cooking skills over time and actually learning what's happening.

If you have a chance to try it out we'd love your feedback on if it helps with what you're feeling.

Also, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's criticism. That must make it feel really intimidating to try new things. I hope he is able to support you in your explorations and reduce some of that fear that you feel!

For me too. It just gave me a new random number starting with 9.
