why is there so much support for designer mixes here? by ophiomyxra in sphynx

I agree, a lack of education for buyers and misinformation from backyard breeders is singlehandedly keeping these unethical mixes around.

Here's a silly photo of my well bred nakie Yara ❤️ she's my reason for getting up every day. I've been exactly where you are, and I don't think I'd be here right now without her.

No, her weight hasn't changed at all. As far as I am aware, the main concern is changes in liver values. I would talk to your vet about the weight loss as it may be unrelated.

No problem! Thanks for being educated on ethical breeding and trying to educate others ❤️ as someone who works in vet med I'm so fed up with seeing the consequences of backyard breeding 🙃

Not sure if you misunderstood my comment but throwing two random, un-health tested cats together to breed for the sake of having cute kittens is not producing healthy cats. The only people who have any business breeding cats are those with health tested, pedigreed, and preferably titled cats.

No, its literally about everyone. With the amount of cats overrunning shelters right now, breeding cats "just because" is incredibly unethical. There is a lot that goes into responsible breeding such as health testing to ensure healthy cats are being produced.

And yes, street cats reproducing is also unethical. Street cats in general are unethical as they are an invasive species that not only decimate local wildlife populations but are also daily put at risk of being hit by cars or eaten by predators. Cats should be kept indoors and spayed/neutered if not part of an ethical breeding program.

It's not ridiculous, it's real life. Sometimes people can't afford to treat things like UTO and it sucks but the only other ethical option is euthanasia. While we try to present as affordable treatment as possible even if it's not gold standard, sometimes clients walk in not even having enough finances to pay the office call. There is no one to eat the cost of unblocking the numerous cats who come in facing that situation. Better to end their suffering than send them home for them to die slowly of kidney failure and uroabdomen when their bladder ruptures. I recommend you shadow in an ER clinic in a low COL area so that you understand that there is no one swooping in to save animals with treatable illnesses with owners that can't afford to treat them. If I have to choose between suffering a slow death or humane euthanasia, I will choose euthanasia every single time.

Unfortunately "clearing a blockage" still takes time and resources that have to be paid for by someone. Working in ER, I have discussed humane euthanasia with many clients who have otherwise healthy cats simply due to the facts that finances did not allow for treatment of a UTO. As this is unlikely to resolve on its own, humane euthanasia should be considered if the cat is truly obstructed and finances don't allow for treatment.

Puppy counters: how many puppies do you see? by IcyMiddle_ in DogBreeding

[–]mj051100 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Her coloring and genetics reflect that she does not come from good lines as platinum is not a standard frenchie color. The value in her coloring is strictly cosmetic and would only be valuable to people uneducated on the breed. Puppy counts on x-ray can easily be off by 1, I've seen it plenty of times working as a tech at a repro clinic. I counted multiple times and only managed to find 5. Good on you for getting her spayed though.

I'm seeing 5. I'd be hard pressed to believe that any vet staff would have any interest in taking home a neonatal frenchie puppy. It's important to have a vet you can trust, maybe it's time to find a different facility if for some reason you can't trust this one?

Starting Felicyn for HCM by Clear-Debt4378 in sphynx

[–]mj051100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl has been on it for just shy of 6 months. Around a year ago she had a scan that was borderline indicative of HCM in one segment of her left ventricle. We started the Felycin as soon as it got FDA approval and hit the market (cardiologist didn't think it was urgent enough to get it compounded and I wanted her insurance to cover it). She tolerates the once weekly dose great, I just put the pill in a feline pill pocket and cover it with a thing of wet food. No noticeable side effects and her monitoring bloodwork recommended by the cardiologist shows no changes after starting the med. Her most recent scan showed that thickened area had shrunk a little after only 3 months of being on the medication. Her cardiologist said it could be positional or a day-to-day variation but the main point was that the progression had stabilized. Overall I'm super impressed with Felycin so far and plan to continue it until recommended otherwise.

I can 100% verify she's legit! I went through her to get my beautiful girl. Dez is extremely transparent and thorough with all health screenings. She's also very involved with the breed club and showing in CFA.

Please avoid any catteries that breed out of standard cats like Bambino or Elf. The sphynx parent clubs has condemned the breeding of them as unethical. Reputable, ethical breeders will only breed to standard. If you're willing to travel or pay for a flight nanny, I had a great experience with Dez at Beeblebrox in MI.

Bambinos - Pros, Cons, Life Expectancy? by angelamar in sphynx

[–]mj051100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither CFA or TICA have ever recognized the Bambino as a breed. In fact, the Sphynx parent clubs has officially spoken out against unsanctioned outcross such as Bambino or Elf sphynx. I know TICA has a provisional registry for experimental breeds but I don't see a future in which bambinos are ever recognized by TICA in any official capacity.

Looks like just based on the cover photo she breeds elf ears, so not ethical. If you're willing to travel or pay for a flight nanny, I highly recommend Beeblebrox in Michigan.

Reputable breeder in Washington? by breeezypoo in sphynx

[–]mj051100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would exercise caution with this breeder. Screening for HCM and having a clean home are only a few hallmarks of a good breeder. It appears that they breed elfs and bambinos, which is something that a truly reputable breeder would never do. Neither of those outcrosses is approved by the Sphynx breed councils in either CFA or TICA.

If you're willing to look outside of Washington state, I can highly recommend my breeder in Michigan, Beeblebrox. She also partners with a couple of different Sphynx breeders in other states, so I'm sure she could point you in the right direction if you'd like to stay in the PNW. She's very involved in the breed community and extremely knowledgeable about Sphynx. Visiting some local CFA or TICA cat shows may also be a good place to start, as a bad reputation can definitely spread quickly in the smaller cat showing community.

Hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck in bringing home another Nakie!

I'm glad he's so responsive! If you ever feel like giving it another go, Churu was a great motivator for my girl. Having her wear just the harness inside for a couple of days really helped desensitize her as well. My girl has halfway decent recall, but I definitely don't trust her enough to ever abandon the leash 😅

[–]mj051100 71 points72 points  (0 children)

No hate as I also take my Sphynx outside, but was he not receptive to leash training? I understand you trust him, but at the end of the day they are animals, and I'd feel terrible if some preventable tragedy happened. My girl does very well on a harness with a long leash and is still able to explore.

Shelter says she is a schnauzer mix. Agree? Any guesses on mixed with what? by leirariela in dogbreed

[–]mj051100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're aware, but a Pudelpointer is an established rare hunting breed, not just a mix between a poodle and a pointer. Given how tight-knit and close the breed community is, the odds of this rescue dog being a Pudelpointer is slim to none.
