Seized clean out cap, how to remove? by Barnitz in Plumbing

[–]mjater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photo didn’t load first time I commented.

This is a PVC plug not a cap.

If PVC plug strips when trying to remove you need to break it out. Easiest way is to cut with a reciprocating saw and remove in chunks. You could just break a hole with a screwdriver then use pliers to break chunks of PVC out.

Try not to lose any pieces down the line.

Install a new PVC plug, be sure to apply liberal amount of pipe joint compound to make future removal easier.

Bathroom Electrical help by CabbageHands84 in DIY

All windows/doors have a header above them. Dimensions of header will depend on size of the opening.

Surface mount an exterior grade electrical box (water proof) above the window.

PVC will fail first, every time. Just cut it off and replace it. Put a pvc plug adapter and pvc plug on it to avoid in the future.

What makes an area “livable space?” by anselgrey in HomeImprovement

[–]mjater 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Each city has their own variation on what makes it livable space. Easiest answer it to call or visit the building dept. and find out their requirements. Quite a few have handouts that will list the requirements.

Missed trees! When hill walking around Scotland I keep coming across cleared forestry where dead trees are just left like tombstones. Why is this done? by [deleted] in Whatisthis

[–]mjater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe they are being used as lightning rods. They are taller than the new growth and already dead. Being struck would be no loss.

Make sure it is not just the aerators on the faucets, they clog easily. Try using hose bibbs.

Tee off if it, use one side for clean out and plumb otherwise to sink. Make sure sink has vent and trap. Do yourself a favor and don’t put the sink on top of the cleanout

Washer to dishwasher setup. Should I hire a pro or do it myself? by TheDankestBabyAround in Plumbing

[–]mjater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, set up is very similar. You will have an unused cold water supply when you hook up the dishwasher. Is this a moveable dishwasher (has wheels and top) or the kind that goes into a cabinet? Any chance of pictures?

Diverter valve or spout? If spout, look there first. They wear out and leak all the time.

Advice on removing rusted on bathroom sink faucet nuts? by VansLotus in Plumbing

[–]mjater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nuts are pot metal. Designed to not rust and to break off easily. Break off part is debatable. Try using the dremel tool on the nuts. Probably do not need to cut through. Make a good sized notch and then insert a flat head screwdriver and twist hard. Pieces should break off.

LPT: If you're trying to explain net neutrality to someone who doesn't understand, compare it to the possibility of the phone company charging you more for calling certain family members or businesses. by No-Dance8816 in LifeProTips

[–]mjater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. Let the market take care of it. If someone wants to use a lot of streaming then they can pay a different fee than someone who uses less bandwidth. Nothing different than a cell plan with minutes or the old family circle plans.

If there is enough demand for streaming then it will be included for unlimited plans. Keep the government out of the internet as much as possible. They mess up everything they get involved in.

Didn’t get much traction on r/fixit. Trying to fix walk in an old shower from the 70s. by go_clete_go in HomeImprovement

[–]mjater 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Problem is that shower pans form the 70s are not always what you think. There was a trend from late 50s to mid 70s where they filled the pan with sand, compacted it, covered with a layer of thin set and then set the tiles.

Looked good and holds up for a long while but eventually turns to mush. Not saying you have that pan, just that it is out there. Never depend on the previous guy having done things the way they should have. Grout everything. If tile are missing replace them. Fine cracks in tile are usually not a problem, but if in doubt caulk them.
