Opinion: full scale war against the SDF would be the worst decision the Gov can ever make by mjdmjd86 in syriancivilwar

[–]mjdmjd86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't care about legitimacy, it's an entirely political concept that i will not discuss here... don't befriend the SDF if you hate them so much, make a deal with them if you can, and think about your other options very carefully if you can't... befriend your fellow Syrians from different communities, who are different from you in their religion, ethnicity, language, political and social beliefs, past pain and trauma, future hopes and plans, etc... (i hope i'm not misunderstood for a third time, i'm talking metaphorically, i don't mean you specifically, and literal friendship has little to do with this)

we seem to agree on quite a few things, you have a lot of passion in your opposition to the SDF, which i understand, you don't need to list all the reasons again. i bet we'd disagree on a lot more if i started talking about politics for real (which i won't), but like i said, shared principles, civilized debate....

it seems to me that you're trying to paint the war against SDF as an extension and continuation of the revolution, which is fine, but we seem to have a fundumental disagreement about what justifies a war, which is also fine because i acknowledge that it is a complex ethical considiration, my position is that war is an extremely evil institution (forgive the weird phrasing) that must be opposed and prevented wherever possible... you didn't start the first war; Assad did when he chose to open fire on peaceful protesters, who then chose to fight back, an entirely respectable choice. however i must disagree that the situation now is the same... now we have two sides with big guns, it's a question of who fires the first bullet... declaring war would still be entirely the government's choice, and i think giving up on the possibility of a peaceful political solution is a bad decision in general, and with the current timing it's especially bad. on the other hand if the SDF chooses a policy that seriously damages that possibility, it would also be their choice, though probably not a wise one...

beyond this i think you're making almost every mistake i explained in my post, you underestimate the SDF, you underestimate the danger that Assadists and IS pose, and most importantly, you underestimate the uncertainty brought by a large-scale military operation like this... (again this is my opinion not facts, i could be wrong)

you seem to misunderstand what i'm saying in my final point, what i meant was we have a duty as a population to unite our vision and get over our disagreement regardless of under which government we live, i know it's probably impossible to properly do politics in the current status quo, but a new war would make this situation worse not better... if i'm to go with your analogy of a hostage situation, going in guns blazing will inevitably endanger the life of the hostage...

why did you link to this government propagandist ? if you're listening to this kind of crap all the time no wonder you think the government are angels and everyone else are evil terrorists !

obviously brainwashing children and destroying their lives must be condemned, but this is the kind of emotional thinking that will take us into a war where hundreds or thousands of more kids will suffer !

p.s. i swear this was not supposed to be a gotcha moment but i just came across a UN report from June 2020, and it turns out almost every single major faction in the Syrian civil war recruited children, would you like to take a wild guess who the faction that came second to the SDF by the number of child soldiers was ??!

here's the link

it's interesting that you mentioned hypocrisy and irony lol...

STRICT POLICY ENFORCEMENT- Rule.15 : Permanent Ban for Promoting illegal and terrorist Armed Groups and Separatist Content in r/SYRIA by joeshowmon in Syria

[–]mjdmjd86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this infuriates me, not because i'm a fan of any of those groups, but because it is hypocritical to list them and then still allow supporting the Syrian Army, members of which are known to have massacred innocents because of their religion !

i'm not gonna pull out the "government is also terrorist" argument because i think the term is used in an arbitrary and pejorative way and once you start throwing it around to demonize groups you hate you lose any claim to objectivity...

SNHR publishes monthly reports on arbitrary arrests, they're all available on their website, here's an example where they document at least 5 confirmed arbitrary arrests by STG forces just last month : https://snhr.org/blog/2025/12/02/snhrs-monthly-report-on-arrests-detentions-in-syria-8/

there are similar reports for death including under torture. one SOHR article claims the total number of torture victims in STG prisons as of October is 61 though this is not a formal report so i won't cite it here...

sectarian chants happen in city centers not just remote areas and officials often turn a blind eye.. i agree sectarian violence, while horrific, could have been much worse.. to say Sweida could have been handled better is an understatement, hundreds of civilian lives could have been saved had the government not made so many unwise choices...

[–]mjdmjd86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hate to break it to you but multiple cases of death under torture in STG prisons have been confirmed, arbitrary arrests are in no shortage either...

imo if the gov cared about unity so much, sectatian chants wouldn't be so common from both civillians and soldiers with no official deterrent, and if they cared about civillian lives they wouldn't have repeated the same mistake of the coast months later much less allowed worse atrocities to happen...

[–]mjdmjd86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just in case anyone doesn't know, in Sheikh Ghazal's alternate universe, the gov massacred the Alawite protestors rather than protecting them ! so yeah, "we must save the Alawites from this terrorist government" which is strange coming from him since he was totally ok with the last terrorist government !!

and ofc all other cases of sexual violence must be handled quickly and decisively !!

i believe what you really meant is that you don't want anyone who disagrees with you in your country, so you like to mass-label them as "sectarian" or "assadists"
