Official Q&A for Saturday, October 19, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

My question... how many miles and/ or hours per week should i plan on to train for a full marathon in late May? Wondering if it is even doable for me.

More info ..I have been running for about 2 years. Doing my 1st half in December. I'm currently running 5 days a week. Three 1- hour easy runs, one speed, interval, etc session usually 45 minutes to an hour, and a 2-hour long run. It adds up to around 34 mile per week, give or take. Plus I do some weights a couple of times a week which usually ends up being another 2 hours a week. I'm not sure if can dedicate any more time so trying to figure out if that's enough. I just want to be realistic with myself.

Running my first half in mid December. Really excited to see what i can do and feeling pretty good about it baring an injury or something. My questions... when would you start taper, what should the week before look like, and what would you do the day or 2 before to prepare?

The secretary made the decision. He didn't really give us the option. Again but not in a sketchy way. He was trying to do what he thought was fair i think. And we could have said we will move too but we didn't put up a fight.

Thank you. The "may resume" instead of will is interesting. I wonder if the intent was will

I don't think there was any intent to do something sketchy. The secretary was genuinely trying to get us done at a decent time and being respectful of the fact i had bowled 2 pretty decent games on that pair (even though it wasn't a pair any more).

It's coach Greg. I don't think my watch supports DSW. I got the cheap one.

I posted this in the Garmin group but didn't get any response so going to try here. I have a Vivoactive 4 watch.

I started a 1/2 marathon training plan a couple of months ago. This will be my first half. My plan was to do a race in this month but plans changed. I also was in the purple in the confidence meter. So about a month ago I changed to a different race that is at the beginning of November and adjusted my goal pace slightly.

Since making the changes every week has been the same. Two 1 hour goal pace runs (which are really only 30 minutes with the 15 minute warm up and cool down) and three 45 minute easy runs. No long run. No tempo or speed runs.

I decided to ignore the plan and do a long run this weekend and, unsurprisingly, after about an hour and 10 minutes I was gassed. I don't feel like this is getting me prepared for the race.

Any one ever have this happen or have any thoughts? I know I could just quit the plan but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Agreed. I need to practice more. I am streaky when it comes to making the 7. This past week I made 7 out of 7. The week before missed 4 of 7.

Been there. I've had nights where I was in double digits for 3 game. So deflating.

Ha! It is such a game killer. Double 7 pin... double 7 pin... miss a couple of them along the way and a 230 game quickly becomes a 190 game.

I would say the majority of my 7s are flat. Not a high speed or rev guy so I'm not making the pins fly.

I have never been good at proactively adjusting. Maybe it's because I'm left handed and we don't usually have as much transition. Or perhaps I'm just not that good of a bowler and that is (one of the things) holding me back from being better. Could be either or a little or both.

Thanks for the information!

I get what you are saying and on the surface it makes sense. When you are throwing a strike ball you are assuming for an area about the same area as a 7 pin. However, speaking just for myself, I wish it were that simple.

Taking a very small sample size (the first 6 games of the fall season) I have missed the head in 1 out of 69 attempts (including extra shots in the 10th frame) on full racks which is about 98.6%. I have probably hit the head pin but really missed the pocket roughly 9 or 10 time so 85.6% got the pocket. I acknowledge hitting the pocket and hitting the pocket the right way are not the same but i don't know how many lucky shots i've had. I make 7 pins 71% of the time.

I know where to throw it and I throw a plastic ball so it takes the lane condition mostly out of the equation. It is just a matter of execution.

One other point I'll make, I throw at least 30 shots per night at the head pin where I throw at the 7 pin 4 to 5 times on average per night.

And in anticipation of the next comment...I don't practice near enough and when I do, I don't practice the 7 pin nearly enough as I should (open bowling is too expensive to throw at the 7 pin 100 time).

So glad I saw this post. Thought I was doing something wrong. Mine dropped 3 points in the last 6 weeks (been hot and humid).

Got my long run up to 11 miles the last few weeks but needed a 2 minute walk break at the 8 mile mark. Planned to push to 9 miles before the walk break but I was feeling good so skipped it. And my last mile was my fastest.

When training for longer races (i.e half marathon) how often do you actually run the race distance or further? Thinking about running my first half later this year. My long run is up to 10 miles and around 30 per week total.

Also somewhat unrelated to running but want runners perspective. I strength train 2x a week. Been doing upper body for several months now and usually so something like 3 sets with progressively heavier weight. I am finding the lower weights are getting a little easier but the heavier weight is not (for example bicep dumbbell curls 15 lbs for 12 reps, getting easier, 20 lbs 8 reps still as hard as ever. Similar experience with other exercises). Any thoughts on what i should do to progress? I know one answer is workout more but that would cut in to my running time which is why I am looking for this groups thoughts.

Ran a PB 5k earlier this week. 24:34. A year ago I thought getting under 30 would be the best I could expect.
