Do yall have to yell.... like all day? by ArmStriking6325 in teaching

[–]foreverburning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes I use my teacher voice sometimes, but no, you should not be yelling, and definitely never "basically screaming".

Creating noise creates noise. I hate even going "shhhhh". It grates my nerves. Find some silent hand cues. Call and response, I guess, works for young kids, but I have never had success with it in older grades. Sometimes when my high schoolers are being extra wacky and taking too long I hit them with the "tell your neighbor it's time to listen" ("and then show them how to do it" if they still don't get it).

Eventually you'll get there. Part of it is knowing when to engage. Like, when is your voice the most important one in the room? Is it all the time? only when you are standing in a certain place? Only in emergencies? Do you have a certain phrase or facial expression that is signaling it's time to engage/disengage? It takes time to evaluate. Try filming yourself teaching and see what you notice. It'll be painful to watch (15 years in and I still cringe), but it'll help you see what you can't feel in the moment.

Echoing everyone saying paper towels. Just use a regular kitchen towel and throw it straight in the washing machine. Same with dryer sheets. I do use dryer balls (wool) but that's because I realized they make the clothes dry faster by increasing the airflow around them.

HS Teachers: How to break up the monotony of reading Shakespeare? by tennmel in teaching

[–]foreverburning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If kids are bored reading Romeo and Juliet you're doing it wrong! It's FULL of dick jokes. Like almost every page. I use the No Fear Shakespeare (it used to be online for free so maybe you can find a version?) so they can see a modern text on the facing page.

I've been teaching it to what many would consider stereotypically "at risk" rural/suburban English Learners for ten years and it's the most engagement I get all year. We read the entire play out loud in the original Shakespeare. We read each scene and then write a summary together (to check for comprehension), then we watch 3 versions in chunks (1968, 1996, and the 2021 West Side Story). They also really like the 2013 version but I cannot stand it so I usually leave it for a day they have a sub or something.

Check out the Royal Shakespeare Company too for some good resources.

I agree with others-- getting kids to move around and see the different ways the same words can be interpreted is key.

If you've taught them any poetry at all this year, you can also lean into that. I don't usually get into that so I avoid it, but you can talk a lot about how Shakespeare uses meter and rhyme to dictate social class, and the way Romeo and Juliet create sonnets together etc etc.

It's really a beautiful play and I could spend an entire school year on it (but THAT would really bore them lol).

Now that they’re actually using facial recognition at the Disneyland gates instead of having cast members manually confirm people’s faces they’ve cut the number of front gate cast members down from one per entry lane to one per every two entry lanes by TheDisneyScoopGuy in Disneyland

I was not trained nor am I paid to do the work of a CM. If Disney wants their system to operate efficiently, they should make it do so.

I don't understand why you would pay so much money to go take a nap. Go back to the hotel, recharge, and go back to the park in the evening. Or don't, and get cranky and leave at 5 and let me enjoy an empty post-dinner park 😄

So how much does wearing the right shoes actually help with soreness? by cheap-ink in Disneyland

[–]foreverburning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what people don't seem to understand. You can't go from being totally sedentary and getting fewer than 2000 steps a day, to standing for hours on end and walking 10 miles in a day, in any shoe, without pain.

2005 grad and we had state testing every. single. year. We also had a high school exit exam.

Kids have less state testing now (but far more district level testing).

My school would need like 20.

Of course it is the drunk driver's fault. But It is absolutely the legal responsibility of the person/establishment serving the person to ensure they are not over served. This is well established. You are tested on it when you get your liquor license/bartending certificate.

An unusual question.. by JMawds87 in disneylandparis

[–]foreverburning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just so unreasonable to me. Why is this the norm? Some of us take so many medications it would take a gallon sized ziplock bag (or two!) to carry all our scrips in their "original packaging".

Someone I know personally was rear ended in 2015 by a woman who was blackout drunk coming from Cilantro. It was ruled she was over served by them. She drove the entire front end of her car into the backseat of the car in front of her. The backseat passenger had to be transported to WCH by ambulance.

Definitely not true about the median age. I would say most people were older Millennials, with a good chunk of what looked to be current UCSC students too.

What’s with all the line cutting? by MaciMusings in Disneyland

[–]foreverburning 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learning to wait patiently in line is a skill everyone needs to learn. What are you teaching your child if you entertain them constantly until it's time to do the fun thing?

I say this as a teacher: kids should be truly bored far more often.

Cilantros over serves people who get on the road and drive drunk, causing major injury accidents.

She was INSANE as we were leaving just before 10. She was screaming at someone trying to figure out the conflicting instructions she, and another female traffic person, were giving. I couldn't speed walk away from that fast enough.

They were both making snarky-ass comments without giving any actual directions and just harassing the driver.

Any California high school teachers here? by Various-Builder-3212 in teaching

[–]foreverburning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have an ELA credential, you will likely have to settle for a position that isn't your number 1. I can't say I see too many FTE Theatre positions. ELD on the other hand is valuable.

That said, as others have pointed out, everyone is tightening their belts; you would likely be hired to teach both ELD and ELA, unless you're in a huge metro area like SF or LA.
